I hear rumblings about the Riccarton Artificial  -breakdowns . no trials etc

Apparently they present two different levels of firmness by grooming the AWT differently.  They only groom 3 days a week or prior to a trial day.  It is harder on Trial day than it is for general work/gallop days.  I would have thought that this isn't a good idea.  Shouldn't it be the same all the time or at the very least the other way round i.e. softer on trial/race days than work days.  I'm not a horse trainer however my understanding is you condition horses to a particular surface through training and increasing the effort as a horse becomes used to it i.e. their bones, joints, ligaments and muscles slowly become conditioned to the firmness.

So wouldn't the management protocol allegedly in place lead to horse breakdowns?

Why not present the same firmness of track everyday?  At least you would know what you were getting.  Do they measure the firmness?  If they don't how do they know what they are presenting?  Especially relative to weather conditions as the artificial surface does alter relative to heat, humidity and water.

I think you will find they would rather race at their local meeting over Easter. Probably more appreciated there.

It's actually an hour from Riverton to Gore, moral of the story is Tyler does choose to train a sizable team out of a distant location, the harness guys can do most of their racing locally but the gallops are a different story, short season and some ho hum meetings when they are racing and it's always been like that, always will be, once Riverton Easters done racing is done basically so you know you got to travel, looking back over Tyler's records its 10 years hes been training a large team, guess like anything one can only sustain things for so long but he certainly does help keep southland racing going though.

Last I heard Riverton races at Riverton and the Tylers train at Riverton so probably a 2 minute stroll around to the start. Of course, it is hard to know where everyone races these days so perhaps the Riverton meeting has moved to Gore, it wouldn't surprise me.  Stranger things have happened.

Alright mr smartarse I was just stating how far Riverton is from everywhere, apart from 4 days a year every other day is a long road trip, just saying ok, only ever been to Riverton once, how many on here have been, be interesting to know.

Race 2 actually  might still be running by race 3

Race 2 Hombre.

Ex Parsons horse now owned/trained by Kimberley Hampton.      Wouldn't be short of expert advice if she needed it, would she?   Dad Roger developed Bart's Best into a champion hurdler,  sister Maria was a successful jockey, Kevin Doolan and Bill Kennedy used to train just up the road, and the O'Malley's and Ron ' Mouse' McCann are still in the district close by.

Probably too much advice.

WTF ?

Kimberley has taken on a 30 start maiden and in two runs, produced him for a third and a win.

Whether she is getting advice or not - and with father Roger in the ownership, probably she is -  she's doing a bloody good job.

FFS I didn't say she wasn't doing a "bloody good job".

Sometimes you can have too much advice and to suggest that she does get advice or infer that's possibly the reason for her success diminishes her achievements.

I'd like to think that she is talented in her own right and doesn't often need to seek advice from all those within 100 miles of her!!!
