looked to be underway ,watching races today.

Yes well underway last I was there 2 weeks ago. Still not sure why that would mean closing the course proper unless they need to dig it up to run drainage or something?

Surely not interfering with the main track? And supposed to be finished by June isn't it?

Who would know?  Seconds thoughts NZTR would know.  So how hard would it be transparent and informative by adding an explanation to the announcement?  I.e. a reason why.

Not Awapuni , but wasn't the AWT supposed to take care of situations like this?

Due to the restriction in numbers all 2YO heats were deleted as was the Open 1200m heats. There were another 15 deleted from the Mdn 1000m heats. This was done is consultation with the trainers association. All horses that missed a trial will be given a preference at the Taupo trials which have now been brought forward to Tuesday 19 April in lieu of the Cambridge trials.

I see that is Avondale you refer to. You can hardly blame them. 25 trials at Avondale this week, 24 at Foxton, both tracks that aren't considered important. If I was running either track I would tell them to f... off and play on their flash AWTs. 15 trials at Ashburton as well. Surely they could have been run on the AWT?

They could have been..but many trainers - me included - wanted grass trials specifically.   There was a call for an alternative [ Ashburton ] after the penultimate set of AWT trials, but they were rained off and therefore held on the AWT.    The consensus, I believe, was to alternate grass/AWT trials whenever feasible.

As previously alluded to, the decision to scrap Rangiora as a very close and tidy venue for trials has meant that Ashburton gets hammered with both trials/racedays.  Not ideal.

I don't blame either venue, both have been poorly treated by the industry.

The point I was making was the AWT was supposed to be able to cope with many many trials   , over many days , however we are finding that what trainers wanted all along was grass tracks. So the pointless strategy in closing them with the view of utilizing the AWTs has not and will not work. People are getting paid in this industry to make poor decisions like this.

The theory seems to be to close lots of tracks for trials and racemeetings so that trainers are forced to use the AWTs. Then they can brag about how popular the AWTs are. The trainers who don't like them will probably just drift away as racing becomes more boring and homoginised. That will please the powers that be as well of course as they seem to only want the bigger compliant trainers rather than the smaller operators who charge too cheaply and give the place a bad look.

We are in for an interesting few months ahead. It is easy to see Pukekohe failing to stand up to racing then they will be forced to either go to the AWT or call on a favour from Avondale again: "just before we execute you, do you think we could use your decent track just once more?"

Likewise, in Canterbury, Ashburton will probably have to be ready to go at a moments notice in case the Riccarton turf becomes unusable again.  All the while Oamaru and Timaru will sit there with unwanted near firm tracks.

The fact that Trentham appears to be the go to alternative winter option in the CD pretty much speaks for itself in that region.
