Mate there is no longer any such thing as "Shield Fever". Rugby is stuffed. In Wellington Football would be at least 3 times more popular in participation.

I have mentioned this before, but I will repeat for you as you are an expat. Karori Waterside Football on their website states that they have 1,000 players and 100 teams. Wests Rugby which covers from Karori to Khandallah / Ngaio only has two senior teams.  If it were not for the polynesian community in Wellington the game would be dead.

Racing as we know is a sunset industry. The land has been sold so once the funds are blown then it will most likely be "Game Over"

I have decided to go to Riccarton for The Cup Day as I want to pay honour to one of the greats, Show Gate ( she has been laid to rest there) who I witnessed completing an amazing treble during Cup Week in 1974

Wests rugby have some of the strongest  junior numbers in the country. The issues for wests is that they lose players when the go to college as they don’t have a college in the area and other clubs are affiliated with the colleges that most of there juniors go to but your right senior rugby numbers on the whole in are in decline in the capital.

Oh come on. They cover a massive area which includes Wellington City's largest suburb and they can only come up with two senior teams?

Look at other suburbs such as Tawa, Johnsonville etc. only a handful of senior Rugby teams. Then look at the Football clubs, North Wellington which covers Johnsonville has 21 senior teams, Tawa has 12 senior teams.

The powers that be in Rugby are in denial and dismiss Football as "soccer poofters".

As I previously said they have big junior numbers, there issue is retention once players reach college and other clubs, most of those kids to go schools affiliated with other rugby clubs and that’s the major issue.

The other issue is that Wests got relegated 10-15 years ago and when the competition was restructured Wests (like stokes valley) we’re left in the wilderness no one with any prospect or ambition was going to play for Wests.

I’d suspect 20 years ago senior football numbers were still higher than rugby purely for the fact it’s less physical and people can keep playing for longer. I don’t dispute your point that rugby numbers are on the decline but the wests situation is not a good example as there are external factors at play.

Well having a shield game and a G1 raceday on the same day suggests no one in either sport has a clue , maybe some bright spark could have thought why not try and make it a package deal so people could go to both , sounds almost like a half decent weekend then .

Why am i even suggesting it , both sports are clueless .

Apparently it was a very successful day , I'm guessing someone in a role like this would be in the know 😆 🤣 😂

Story didn't state how it was a successful day, certainly wasn't for Southland rugby supporters, just coming up a bit short, in the shield game, , back to the racing the fact they actually got a full day in could be judged a milestone.

Seriously though it would be good to see the betting figures, for everyday, apparently I believe that if you bet on your phone on course then that is deemed a bet on course, can anyone confirm that, the TAB know your location at time of placing a bet or something., seeing the tote figures or the fixed odds take  is always interesting, why the secrecy ?

Mike, just to bring you up to speed, NZTR and TAB are secret societies, a bit like the Masonic Club, The Masons......you know, a special handshake, and talking in code.......what's not a secret, the ineptitude, the hopelessness, the lack of care and accountability, and the ability to make wild guesses. The funs gone, fun, the quintessential factor essential for racings survival, cos tis but a fleeting thing, fun.

Sorry but I cannot accept your reasoning. We are talking about an area with a 100k population having just two senior teams in what is supposed to be our National Sport.

A couple of years ago I was watching a football game in Stokes Valley which you mention, and Stokes Valley is a social club for Football. Well, they had 9 senior football teams and from memory Stokes Valley had two senior Rugby Teams.

There are many Football clubs in Wellington in places that Rugby does not exist ie. Island Bay, Brooklyn. Eastbourne etc.

Things are so bad for Rugby in Wellington they are now playing some NPC Wellington games at Porirua Park. I guess a crowd of 200 can look a lot larger there.
