An anxious crowd at Rosehill watched intently, waiting to see if Chautauqua would jump in his barrier trial on Saturday and he did – the problem was it was a couple of seconds after the rest of the field left the barriers.

The champion sprinter ventured to the races on Saturday with his career on a knife’s edge, after failing to jump on terms with his opponents “to stewards’ satisfaction” in seven of his last eight barrier trials or jumpouts.

Reports came out of the Hawkes Racing stable during the week, the popular grey had been jumping in barrier practice which brought renewed optimism that Chautauqua’s phobia could be a thing of the past but those hopes were quickly dashed.

Loaded into the inside gate, jockey Tommy Berry patting Chautauqua’s near side flank until grabbing the reins when the starter mounted his rostrum.

The gates opened - seven of the eight starters left the barriers while Chautauqua resisted Berry’s urgings until eventually jumping, giving his opponents “five or six lengths” start.

Once again Chautauqua has failed to exit the barriers effectively. He was, however, very competitive down the straight, making up a huge amount of ground for a close second to Zousain.

"His last six times (In unofficial Rosehill jumpouts) he'd jumped," Berry said. "I came here thinking he'd jump for sure today.

"They'd gone a fair few strides when he jumped out and when he did jump out he cruised around behind them and then picked them up in the straight with plenty left if the tank.

"Still not ideal, not good enough but he felt incredible."

Chief steward Marc Van Gestel said stewards would have discussions with the stable before making a decision on Chautauqua's future.

“We did say if the horse refused to jump that would be it but he hasn’t refused to jump,” Van Gestel said.

“Obviously in our mind it wasn’t a satisfactory trial.

“Whether or not it leaves the door open or not is something for us to consider.”

Chautauqua tacked onto the field as they entered the straight in the 1000m trial, working home strongly to finish second to Zousain, actions which Van Gestel said creates something of “a grey area now”.

“If he refused to jump it would have been black and white as to what the decision would have been,” he said.

“We have to consider now if we give the horse another opportunity.”

Oh..ffs...let him have the retirement he is clearly looking for.

Greedy bunch of pricks.

I beg to differ Freda.  I'd agree if he refused to race completely.  But he just isn't jumping with them but he NEVER has!  Take a look at all his big race wins.  You'd agree that his condition looks fantastic at the moment.

For some reason the horse has always had a brain fade about leaving the gates.  I think as he has got older he has got blonder.

Whats the problem, punters know that he could miss the start, thats the chance they take.

No difference to Lord module in the 80s, that old shit was worse.

Yes and Chautauqua has always been a risk.  Unlike Lord Module there doesn't seem to be any obvious physical condition causing Chautauqua to not jump.

I would say in today's environment Lord Module would have been banned from racing due to quarter cracks.

Not sure lord modules quarter cracks made him so pig headed, sure it affected him running, but he refused to even walk at times, fell over and tefused to get up? In the head me thinks, but these type of nags have the ability.

Agree, pay your money and take your chance, that's why it's called gambling.

Agree. He's always just fallen out of the gates and only winds up the last 200. Arrogant old bugger! Not much different in his trial the other day. Kinda like he says "no panic, we'll just fall out of the gates, follow them around and run past them the last furlong. I know where the line is." Not much different from his trial the other day.

Updated version:

Following Chautauqua failing to jump from the barriers to the satisfaction of Racing NSW Stewards in a barrier trial at the Rosehill Gardens race meeting on Saturday, 25 August 2018, Racing NSW Stewards have advised the connections of Chautauqua that their preliminary decision is that, acting under the provisions of AR50, the nominations of the gelding should be refused for all barrier trials and race meetings.

In order to provide the connections with due process, the Stewards have invited the connections to make any appropriate submissions as to why the Stewards’ preliminary decision should not be confirmed.

Managing owner of Chautauqua, Mr Rupert Legh, has informed Stewards that the majority of shareholders in Chautauqua intend to make submissions in response to the Stewards’ preliminary decision.

As such, Racing NSW Stewards shall hear those submissions at Racing NSW’s office (Level 11, 51 Druitt Street, Sydney) commencing at 1pm on Tuesday, 28 August 2018.

Ban overturned....

https://www.racenet.com.au/news/bizarre-chautauqua-hearing--who-is-mr-q-20180828

After two hours of deliberation, stewards relented, ruling that Chautauqua would be permitted to return to competition under the following circumstances:

1. Chautauqua is not to barrier trial until after 22 September 2018, so as to allow sufficient time for a re-education process, having regard to the evidence of the behaviourist.

2. Chautauqua must barrier trial on two consecutive occasions to the satisfaction of the Stewards, before being permitted to race again.

3. Should Chautauqua not show improvement in commencing from the barriers as compared to its last barrier trial on 25 August 2018 and/or does not trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards again, the gelding’s nominations for all barrier trials and race meetings will be refused under AR50.
