    • Meeting News Trainer Info re Positive Swab - Caffeine   NZTR have been advised by the RIB that they are investigating a caffeine positive swab in relation to a thoroughbred racehorse. A product used by the trainer has been the subject of an advisory by the manufacturer in Australia. Please check the link below for more information. Important Information about MetaboLize – Poseidon Animal Health NZ Inquiries with a NZ supplier of MetaboLize revealed they also received an email notification from Poseidon yesterday.   Important Information about MetaboLize Published 19 March 2025 We want to inform you about a recent quality control matter regarding MetaboLize. Routine testing by Racing Australia detected trace amounts of caffeine in three horses that had been given MetaboLize. Following this, we conducted extensive testing and a full investigation. The results confirmed that one of the raw materials used in MetaboLize was unknowingly contaminated with caffeine residue before arriving at our manufacturing facility. Since MetaboLize does not naturally contain caffeine, this was entirely unexpected. In response, we have strengthened our testing and quality control procedures—both at our manufacturing site and with our raw material suppliers—to ensure this does not occur in the future. This was an isolated incident, and no other products from our range have been affected.  The full test results, received yesterday, showed an extremely low level of caffeine (less than 0.5%) in the November production batch which is what is in the marketplace today. While this trace amount poses no risk to a horse’s health or safety, it could possibly be detected in competition drug tests. Caffeine is water-soluble and, at this low dose, will be excreted quickly from the horse’s system. So, for precaution, our veterinary team recommends a 72-hour withholding period before racing or competing where drug testing may occur.  Moving forward we have implemented strict protocols where all future batches of MetaboLize will be pre and post screened for caffeine prior to release to market. If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team via phone or email at info@poseidonanimalhealth.com. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your trust in us. Our commitment remains unwavering in providing the highest-quality supplements to support equine health and performance.
    • southlands problem has been they don't have the numbers to sustain the amount of racing programmed for their region,so you just get a diluted, less profitable profit. And of course the levels of participation is influenced by the returns people get,so if you have a less profitable product then the abilty to sustain levels of returns must drop and subsequently so will partication drop further. Its all just an ever decreasing circle.   thats never going to change.so the best approach is to address the issues now,not later.  HRNZ are being consistent,.They seem to be taking the same head in the sand approach as they are to the auckland problem. Thats why i often say theres a lack of vision and leadership coming from hrnz. Everyone knows what the problems are,but leadership  put off addressing the problems because its simply easier to paint over the cracks, and then move on to postions with greener pastures .Thats how it all seems to work.
    • looking at last year, the smaller fields and race numbers came in july-september,so maybe no southland harness racing between july and mid september. I'sn't it just common sense to cut out the southland meetings which run at a loss during those months and incentivise redirecting the resources(i.e. the horses) into racing in canterbury or auckland during those same months when their fields are light in numbers, thus increasing the returns from those races.
    • The 2025 Albury Cup Day meeting has been abandoned due to significant rainfall. The highly anticipated Albury Gold Cup meeting has been abandoned after heavy rainfall rendered the track unsafe for racing. Racing NSW stewards made the early call on Friday morning, following more than 40mm of rain in the past 24 hours, leaving surface water across the course. Albury Racing Club CEO Steve Hetherton confirmed the cancellation of all scheduled activities for the day, urging racegoers not to head to the track. “Unfortunately, the racing has been cancelled, and the club has made the decision to call off all activities,” Hetherton said. “We understand this is disappointing for everyone involved.” Local trainer Kym Davison expressed his frustration at losing another Albury Gold Cup meeting, recalling the event’s previous washout in 2019. “The old hex strikes again,” Davison said. “You might expect to lose a meeting once in 50 years, but not twice in such a short period. It’s a huge blow for the club, considering the massive amount of work that goes into preparing for a day like this.” While the club remains in discussions with Racing NSW about a potential rescheduling, Hetherton admitted the complexities involved. “Finding a new date is not that easy. There are significant impacts on other clubs when trying to reschedule,” he said. “We can’t disrupt other meetings, especially in our region. An announcement will be made in due course.” Horse racing news View the full article
