    • MGSW Patches O'Houlihan (Reload–Maythefourthbwithu, by Silent Name {Jpn}), the reigning Canadian Horse of the Year was humanely euthanized according to a press release from Woodbine Entertainment late on Thurday night. Woodbine issued the following statement on behalf of Frank Di Giulio, Jr., the owner and breeder of the 5-year-old gelding. The message republished here in its entirety said: We are heartbroken to announce that 2024 Horse of the Year Patches O'Houlihan was humanely euthanized on Thursday, July 10. After sustaining a soft tissue injury while galloping out after winning the GII bet365 Highlander Stakes, it was hoped that he would recover well enough to be retired to pasture. However, in the time since then, his prognosis worsened. We consulted with veterinarians and surgeons on an ongoing basis and it was determined surgery was not a viable option for a sustained quality of life. Condolences and sincere thanks go out to the many people who cared for Patches on a daily basis including trainer Bob Tiller, assistant trainer Tom Lottridge, groom Clifford Knight, his exercise rider Thorney Herriot and the whole Tiller team, as well as veterinarians Dr. Vicky Banks, Dr. Dan Colangelo and Dr. Natalie Cote. Everyone at the barn is devastated. Also, thank you to Sherry McLean for foaling and raising Patches, Ian Dick at Buttigieg Training Centre for his off season care, Sofia Vives for her tremendous rides the last two years, Daisuke Fukumoto for riding him in his three year old year, and the Woodbine starting gate crew for attending to Patches so quickly after the accident. We are going to dearly miss watching him run, as will his many fans. He gave us so much pleasure and so many thrills during his career. Patches O'Houlihan was an amazing animal that was beautiful both inside and out. He absolutely loved to race and possessed outstanding heart and desire, and was as honest as they come. We are deeply saddened by the loss of Patches, but we are truly blessed and grateful to be part of such a true Champion. Ontario-bred Patches O'Houlihan won 13 of 16 races at Woodbine, which included six graded races. The Robert Tiller trainee sustained his injury in the Highlander Stakes June 28. • They sort of feel like the 'New' player in a way. Really they are right up there, and attacking hard in both Islands with all sorts of horses. but No trotters ? or hardly any.  I think that shows the stable 'inexperience' level a bit. amidst the Sea of star horse people that make up the NZ racing fields.    and Not quite Cup class either ?  as BD Joe was just short of the better ones, and Alta Meteor too. Ohoka Connor was finishing near last in Open class racing and the Slot races and that earlier this year.   But a Red Hot go at it is being made by the Stonewall team. so good on em'.  Lots of runners. Hard to bet on them at times like you say. Tim Williams driving well is a class act, and they take on the Feature young horse racing with Gusto. Stella Rouge some good results . I had a couple of bets on Miki Bennett , alas he galloped in one of them when going to win too, so do respect their ability.  and they (Stockman)  even bought Two x $300,000 + record Priced Yearlings this year at the Yearling Sales So the real pressure still to go on at some stage.😂.  There's Nothing quite like 'high priced flops/ or purchases to throw the mammoth pressure onto the Trainers.
    • Perhaps the RIB are planning some more powers. Wouldnt be surprised. There are a lot of ex cops there.
    • I disagree.  Your post prompted me to read the letter again and in my opinion the letter makes a strong statement about the extreme abuse some individuals are resorting to. I just hope they act against the worst offenders.
    • That race at Oamaru is 35k, it's a feature day but it's keeping at the same level as the others.
