  1. Gai, TJ, Murray Baker they put heaps of pressure on early. Survival of the fittest.
  2. I must say the fields at Riccarton are shyte. Have Pitty's horse's all gone sore?
  3. Yes but HIS educator owns the Welcome Stakes winner in the Karaka. Vespa was also a Rutten horse.
  4. 2nd in the 2nd. Did the RIU breathalyse today?
  5. Ok Joe so you are equally not a fan of the Magic Millions. If I was a buyer then I'd pay up for the sweepstake as it's a small % of what I've paid to buy a well bred horse. However it wouldn't be the end game for me. I'd still do what was right by the horse long term. As for the Golden Slipper - how many horses has Gai or her Dad fucked aiming for it?
  6. Joe what was the basis for that assessment aside from your anti-cartel position?
  7. Definitely got a chance. Kenny doesn't push many 2 yr olds. It will be a bit like the Golden Skipper - if you can't make your own luck then you'll need luck!
  8. Yep Kenny's is a good horse. Which means Avonella is no slug. Coyote looks a good un especially when distance on big tracks arrives. There's a Sneaky in amongst the Te Akau horses.
  9. Well the CJC and TAB NZ have named Riccarton the Chris Johnson Racecourse. CWJ duly obliges and rides the winner of the first!
  10. The more I analyse the Karaka Million the more I'm convinced that the field this year is one of the best ever. I can see big upsides in more than half the field including the ballots.
  11. How many early colts now days go on or are allowed to go on?
  12. Disagree. Some ordinary fields interest first few years. I reckon there is a star amongst this crop. I'd love to be there to see it.
  13. All that aside some very good horses have won it in the past with half of them kicking on at the next levels
  14. I think you should be pointing your finger at NZTR as it is they who are responsible.
  15. Aside from the $500k "subsidy" (isn't it twice that?) what would you change? I believe the Breeder's, Stud's and Owners should fund the sweepstake races not the industry. So I would change that. I believe Te Akau has in the past subsidised the broadcasting on free to air. Just as they do Weigh In. Now that TAB NZ has abdicated any responsibility for marketing and we are now reliant on NZTR to do it then the so called "cartel" is all that is left.
  16. So what? All you did was quote a statement without a source that says Opie has been retained as the No 1 rider for Te Akau. You don't know that a RETAINER is being paid! Hell there would be any number of Jockey's that would PAY Te Akau to be their No 1 rider. Being retained doesn't confirm that Opie is being paid a retainer! So Thomass get the Princess to spank YOU!
  17. I didn't say Opie wasn't on a retainer I just asked "so what"? I also asked how do you know? What sort of retainer is it? Is it more like an employment contract? "Opie we expect you to ride at least 30 of our horses in track work each week and we'll give you first choice of raceday mounts. If you are suspended we expect you to ride 50 horse each work. BTW you pay for all your own fines and legal costs." What does it matter?
  18. Agreed. I don't see any big deal with it. If you can afford it why not? If I had a team of horses and/or a breeding establishment I would gladly have Sam Collett and Danielle Johnson on retainer. Not only are they more than useful Jockey's but are articulate and marketable so I'd make sure that the retainer just didn't involve riding my horses but also assisting with the marketing of my business.
  19. The fact that there are or aren't retainers paid means SFA. It means nothing. It is common practice overseas why would it be any different here? That's not being "contrary" it's just pointing out that that in the overall scheme of things it is irrelevant. Also it is a private business contract between two contracting parties. Very few of us know how much the retainer is or the terms of the contract. Doesn't stop everyone speculating though. I would have thought that given Te Akau's success and their general dominance of the big races that Opie would be paying Te Akau a retainer!
  20. Still doesn't answer the question - how do you know Opie is on a retainer? Not that having Jockey's on retainers is unheard of particularly in Australia. Racing supposedly is a professional sport that allows amateur's to compete.

  24. A class 4 license applies to Clubs and Pubs. I'm not sure if there are special conditions for the TAB other than "If the applicant is TAB NZ, the venue is used mainly for racing betting or sports betting". But back to the topic you don't have to have those dross races to meet the requirement for race or sports betting to be available. Fixed odds, a meeting later in the day etc. For example the first race tomorrow that is likely to be "abandoned" is at 6:46am. I doubt any TAB agency with Pokies will be open at that hour! Later in the week there are races from South Africa at 3:00am!
