In 20 months no more @Yankiwi....I mean Greyhounds are Banned!
Yankiwi replied to Chief Stipe's topic in Dog Chat
If only GRNZ kept the dangerous 375m boxes at PN permanently redundant & replaced by the 410m boxes, even when it was inconvenient, while Wanganui was shut down for a refurb. That was reported to the minister under the Hanson report in 2020. https://www.grnz.co.nz/Files/June 2020/2020 02 21 Ministerial Quarterly Update %238 web version.pdf Instead, being short sighted they recommissioned the 375m starting position and changed the lure distance rule from 4m - 8m out to 4 - 10m, to suit the PN track with no thinking or studies on what effect the rule change would have on the other tracks. Manukau bore the worst outcomes from that idiotic decision. So, then GRNZ was going to install a safety rail in November 2023 to resolve the new issue they had created yet failed too for the second time in 9 years. It's all in writing. You just have to read it. -

Yeah, Yankiwi's killed the sport alright. It wasn't things like GRNZ saying they are going to something to fix a problem & then never do it, like safety rails for all tracks in 2014. It's Yankiwi's fault that Coles did some dodgy private rehoming of their dogs, as per below. That would have really helped Winston make his decision. https://racingintegrityboard.org.nz/decisions/non-raceday-inquiry-written-decision-dated-6-december-2024-lisa-cole/ GRNZ has done it to themselves. The antis were hot on their tails for many years & even a supporter of greyhound racing, that is no longer bound by the rule book to keep my mouth shut, has been doing some loud barking telling them to sort their shit out or this outcome is inevitable. Even the RIB thought GRNZ were slow or not even at the table in many instances, as their reports to the minister have shown. Clubs & their local trainers played their part too, by voting like a popularity contest in the board votes over the years. In the most recent election, Wayne Steele was barely reelected 4 to 3 over J Mac. Any trainer that voted at the club level for J Mac over Wayne was part of the problem IMHO. The RIU/RIB have let the code down in their own right. The Cole bullring episode was the most blatant. I can remember only one firm penalty for a serious infraction being handed down over the years and that was in the Davey Boy case. Almost all cases saw a penalty minimalized. Recent cases have seen a penalty being handed down & suspended, unless a further breach occurs in the next 12 months. That's ridiculous. -
Out of the 3 of you, at least one of you should be able to spot the dog that is chasing another dog's feet & not the lure.

Are the trainers starting to "get it"? From a couple of weeks ago. Tuesday 12 November Due to feedback from LPs next Tuesday's Wanganui GRC meeting has been reinstated on the circle track (Hatrick Raceway) NOT the Straight Track. No stir-ups available, required by the rules. No alert for the dogs (lure run-up noise) that the boxes will be opened soon. Just box up the second row (the even #'s) then leave it to the dogs to "guess" when the lids will pop open. Does the inside dog get an advantage when the starter flops his arm around notifying the lure driver that he's ready for the race to begin? The most inside dog has the best chance of seeing the starter waving his arm. Also, the most inside box has no other noise sources between it and the starter. The squeeze point just after the finish line for the catching pen causing many dogs to ease prior to the line.

Ok Chief, you defend GRNZ for their stellar performance on fixing the 24/25 Q1 seasons most dangerous track, only to return yesterday for the first race meet of the current quarter and realize twice as bad results as were occurring prior to them fixing it. If GRNZ hadn't been proactive & fixed it, the results would have been even worse. Maybe you should explain to John McInerney Jr how he got it wrong, because he felt that the track wasn't safe and pulled all his starters out of the last two races on the card. He's been around a long time & should have been able to look past his dog that had to be put down after blowing out its radius/ulna in race 4. Then after that having a second dog ruptured a ligament in race 6. Race 10 saw the brand-new lure system fail, where another of John's dogs injured a right sartorius muscle & received a 21-day stand-down. My failure to apply a variance estimate & his flawed decision to scratch all his dog from the last two races were the cause of all the problems. https://www.grnz.co.nz/catch-the-action/16118/stewards-report.aspx

Not a good look for Southland. The people that approved the recent refurb as "ready to return to racing" should be held responsible for that decision. The job was to fix this, and this is what was accomplished.
-
Use caution with these sorts of things Thomass. Chief doesn't like it when you expose the racing governing bodies for not doing what they claim they will be doing. If NZTA, HRNZ or GRNZ says they are going to do something, that's enough to address the problem.

I have evidence that GRNZ has claimed to be installing safety rails for animal welfare on all NZ tracks for well over 10 years now. Number installed = one, well maybe now 3/4 of one at Wanganui. It was installed completely around the inside of the track near the lure rail. Then they took portions of it down. Then they did a complete refurb a couple of years ago & put it all back up again. Now since that refurb, they've taken portions of it back down, as seen last night.

Oct 2023 quarterly report to the Minister of Racing. https://www.grnz.co.nz/Files/Quarterly Reports/GRNZ October 2023 Quarterly Report - FINAL.pdf Once again, welfare was GRNZ's "utmost priority". Yet GRNZ claimed "delays" to Auckland's safety rail over a year ago. There has been no news reported of several container ships sinking or of containers falling overboard with GRNZ's safety rails in them. So, where is Manukau's safety rail GRNZ? Where's all the other tracks rails/fences to totally enclose them, which you claimed were going to be installed over autumn/winter? What is the truth revolving around this? Asking for the Minister of Racing & the welfare of greyhounds.

I don't know what caused the rapid change. I have heard that they've had to strip the top layer and sift it (possibly twice) so far because of rocks/stones in it. Also, that further delays getting the track back are expected. GRNZ did put a couple of notices out which have now disappeared & seemed to have gone silent on the matter publicly. Here's 15 months of major injury stats. Southland. All Major (22+ days & death) 23/24 Q1 = 0.392% 23/24 Q2 = 0.670% 23/24 Q3 = 0.272% 23/24 Q4 = 0.372% 24/25 Q1 = 1.174% Major 2+ (43+ days & death) 23/24 Q1 = 0.392% 23/24 Q2 = 0.096% 23/24 Q3 = 0.246% 23/24 Q4 = 0.106% 24/25 Q1 = 0.961%

You might be happy with a post of mine (for once) Chief. I've heard that Liz has some sort of a disagreement/blow out with Mr. Dore & decided to move on. I'm told she has taken up a position with Entain, but I have been unable to verify it thus far.

First quarter of the GRNZ 2024/2025 season is complete. There's one stand-out track which is Cambridge landing well within the GRNZ KPI standards. Well done Cambridge! As for the other six tracks, I guess we'll have to call them stand-down tracks. Major 2+ category. Akl 170% excess injuries Chch 93% excess injuries Wang Oval 95% excess injuries Wang Str 100% excess injuries Palm 49% excess injuries South 349% excess injuries. All tracks combined with 9448 total starters, 20 dogs was considered the acceptable attrition rate by incurring a major 2+ injury per GRNZ's KPI. The results show that 42 dogs incurred a major 2+ injury, which is over double the KPI amount leading to 22 extra real dogs ending their racing career due to them. The breakdown of region/track configuration isn't a good look either. To compare Quarter 1 in the 2023/2024 seasons with the current 2024/2025 season, it looks terrible. Every individual track preformed worse than the previous season. So GRNZ, whatever you are doing to try to minimize major 2+ injuries isn't working. Read your own number, wear them & do something different, because what you've done so far has made it twice as bad as the previous season.

Care to respond Mr. Kingston? Amendment 1: Definition of Qualifying Trial qualifying trial means an Event held pursuant to conditions prescribed by GRNZ by which the eligibility of greyhounds to compete in another Event is determined. A qualifying trial is not a race. Amendment 2: 127 Period of suspension to be imposed for marring or failing to pursue Subject to rule 125, where, in the opinion of the Stewards, a greyhound is found to have marred or failed to pursue the lure during an Event the Stewards must impose a period of suspension in respect of the greyhound, which is to be recorded as part of the identification record as follows: (a) in the case of a first marring offence, 28 days at all tracks and until the completion of a satisfactory trial and in the case of a first failing to pursue offence, 28 days at the track where the offence took place and until the completion of a satisfactory trial at that track; or Background Definition of qualifying trial The current definition of a qualifying trial is very similar to the definition of a race, the addition of the underlined sentence should remove any issue. Penalty for first FTP Offence Currently, GRNZ differs from GA in regards to a first FTP offence, in that GRNZ imposes a 28 day stand down at ALL tracks. The GA Rule only imposes the stand down at the track where the FTP offence took place and GRNZ are looking to adopt this. With the Straight track being such a different experience for NZ greyhounds, trainers wishing to try their greyhounds on the Straight track will be able to do so without fear that an FTP offence will stand down their dog from their regular track(s). However this Rule change applies everywhere, so that any first FTP offence will only be stood down for 28 days at the track where that FTP took place.

It's a rule that says "Every Club Must" The club is not giving the trainers the opportunity to stir up their greyhound pre-race on the straight track.
-
Is the RIB investigating this or choosing to ignore the rule for the straight track? I've seen them walking over from the oval track kennels to the new track, then they're taken behind the boxes & then boxed away. No stir up...

Who's the PBD preference assignment person? Whoever it is needs some schooling. Both the #1 & #2 are not railing. They want out wider. The #6 sure wants down on the inside The #1, #2 & #6 all made it to the finish line without falling. The #3 & #5 weren't so lucky. If this is the way your PBD is going to work, it's not going to reduce injuries.

I don't say this often, but you're doing the right thing here GRNZ. Further evaluation of the Invercargill track has resulted in a greater amount of work required so the track will not be available next week, nor for Fri 8 November or Wed 13 November. An additional meeting has been scheduled for Addington next Wednesday 30 October, so the revised Addington schedule for next week is now: The injury data was overwhelming in saying there was a serious problem. Going forward, act sooner rather than later. Warning bells were ringing after the first two race meets of the season. Those bells changed to a siren after the third meeting.

Southland abandoned after 4 races today due to track problems. 1). The meeting was delayed after race 3 to allow Stewards, club officials, the track curator, and senior trainers to inspect the track. This inspection was prompted by several greyhounds sustaining abraded carpal pad injuries. Remedial work was carried out, with the track to be further monitored. However, following race 4, it was noted that the remedial work had caused a new issue which was unable to be remedied in a timely manner. Following consultations with the track curator, club officials, and Stewards, the track was deemed unsatisfactory for continued racing, leading to the abandonment of the remainder of the meeting. The problems go back to the beginning of the current racing season. The Stewards make the right call today. Maybe GRNZ would like to take a look back to what I had to say about Southand on 02 Sept. Guess which track has the arrow is pointed at it. Southland became a problem. I pointed it out. Nothing was done, until today. I'm not your enemy GRNZ. Swallow your pride & use the information I'm providing for free to you.

Liz was and will probably continue to be a good advocate for greyhound racing. I don't now and have never had an issue with Liz. I did have an issue with GRNZ, for inventing a COO job position just for her & then never bothering to even ask for application for the new position. Was Liz the best person for the position? We'll will ever know because no-one was ever given the chance to claim they might be qualified & ready to get stuck in, before she magically turns up & had the job handed to her.

It's been brought to my attention that there has been another scratching at GRNZ. I've checked on TradeMe, but have been unable to find where they may have listed a slightly used desk for pick-up in Petone. Will the scratching be filled by one of the reserve desks? I doubt it, as the position was invented for the person, not the actual needs of GRNZ. Where's our National Racing Woman of the Year? https://www.grnz.co.nz/about-nzgra/contact-us.aspx
