  6. What will become of Waterlea Racecourse if racing goes? STUART SMITH10:39, Feb 17 2019 Facebook Twitter Google + Email Comments4 SCOTT HAMMOND/STUFF The racecourse and grandstand at Waterlea Racecourse. OPINION: The announcement that the gallops and harness racing at Waterlea Racecourse may no longer be possible by the end of this year has a number of implications for the Marlborough community. The New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) Venue Plan identified the Marlborough Racing Club as one of the clubs that may not be issued with a betting licence from August 1 this year. Last year, Racing Minister Winston Peters' Messara report listed Waterlea as a site that should be refurbished, but not shut. This meant Marlborough's racing community was taken by surprise to some degree by the NZTR's latest announcement. SUPPLIED The Interislander Summer Festival harness races at Waterlea Racecourse in Blenheim in January. NZTR will receive submissions until March 19 and conduct meetings with stakeholders before that deadline. Should the Waterlea venue be de-licensed by the NZTR, it will become almost impossible for horse racing, gallops or harness racing events to take place at Waterlea Racecourse, and this will end what is a nearly 100-year-old organisation in the region. A lot of horses are trained at Waterlea, predominantly trotters, and many people will be adversely affected if this is to cease. ADVERTISEMENT Advertise with Stuff The racing club shares facilities with the Marlborough Harness Racing Club, which has its own national racing authority but may also be affected. The other significant implication which will no doubt be on many people's minds is that Waterlea had previously been in negotiations with the Ministry of Education as a possible site for Blenheim's new co-located colleges. The ministry has since announced that the new colleges will be built on what is currently Marlborough Girls' College and Bohally Intermediate. I suspect that by the time the NZTR makes its final decision about Waterlea Racecourse, likely to be some months away, it will be too late to revisit the racecourse as a potential site for the schools. The final implication for Blenheim is what to do with the land if the NZTR's decision ends racing at Waterlea. If the owners of the land decide it is to be redeveloped, I would like to see some of the land purchased by Marlborough District Council for the community, such as more sporting facilities to sit alongside Lansdowne Park, which is so nearby. At this time, we will have to wait and see until decisions are made. *Stuart Smith is the National Party MP for the Kaikōura electorate. 14. BLUE-BLOOD FILLY PROVIDES YOUNG APPRENTICE WITH FIRST WINNER February 17, 2019 Simogramor (inner) breaks her maiden status with a win at Gisborne Trish Dunell Apprentice rider Shiarna Johnson was the quintessential picture of calm as she scored the first winner of her fledgling career when guiding home royally-bred filly Simogramor at Gisborne. Having just her second raceday ride, Johnson was entrusted with the mount on the $2.30 favourite after guiding the daughter of multiple Group One winner Katie Lee to a brace of trial wins recently. Prepared at Tuhikaramea by Team Rogerson, Simogramor had been placed on debut as a juvenile behind the talented Espumoso, who has taken Hong Kong by storm with three wins from as many starts under the new name of Regency Legend. That was as good as it got for Simogramor in four further starts before heading to the spelling paddock in September last year. Handled patiently by her mentors, the Fastnet Rock filly showed a torrent of speed for Johnson when leading all the way to win her two preparatory trials by a combined 18 lengths prior to Sunday’s raceday reappearance. Johnson adopted similar tactics as she let Simogramor slide along in front in the maiden 1200m contest and was six lengths clear approaching the home turn. Cuddled up by Johnson, the filly was shortening stride as the challenges came but had enough in reserve to hold out stablemate Masarova by a head to provide Johnson with her moment of triumph. Co-trainer Debbie Rogerson was thrilled by the performance of both Simogramor and her young apprentice. “I’ve got a lot of time for Shiar, she’s come a long way in a short time,” she said. “The horse runs for her although she (Simogramor) is really only a 1000m horse. I had to have her fit for the 1200m today. Apprentice rider Shiarna Johnson Trish Dunell “She (Johnson) rides her every morning and has won the two trials on her.” Rogerson was also quick to pay tribute to former top-class riders Noel Harris and Jimmy Cassidy who have played a major role in educating the young apprentice. “I have to say a special thanks to Noel Harris and Jim Cassidy as they have really really helped her,” she said. “Noel introduced me to her 12 months ago and we started to teach her how to ride trackwork properly. “She has progressed from there and I think she will be a very very good apprentice as she has a great nature and personality and is a hard worker.” Johnson was quick to double her pleasure when she produced a carbon copy on the Rogerson-trained Hingis in race 4, leading all-the-way to win by a nose in a blanket finish. The apprentice was taking the day’s proceedings in her stride when questioned about her riding background. “I originally started riding trackwork around the Takanini area when I was 13 or 14,” she said. “I stopped after a few years to try something different but got back in to it last year with the Rogerson’s. “They helped me a lot to get to where I am today and I’ve also had a lot of help along the way from Noel Harris and Jimmy Cassidy. “She’s a really lovely ride (Simogramor) and I thank Debbie so much for giving me the ride. “My goal is just to have fun and learn as much as I can.” The win by Hingis completed an early treble for Team Rogerson after Nuclear Fusion scored in the third race on the card. They made it four for the day when Pierian Spring won the last race of the day. – NZ Racing Desk

  20. Finally the mainstream media catch up OLYMPIC LEGEND TRAINING EMINENT February 17, 2019 Eminent and jockey Jim Crowley return to the winner’s enclosure after victory in the Craven Stakes Racingfotos.com Sir Mark Todd, New Zealand’s greatest Olympic eventer, has taken on a new challenge and is training regally-bred racehorse Eminent and plans to run the five-year-old son of Frankel at Group One level in Sydney in autumn. Eminent, a Group Two winner for UK trainer Martyn Meade, is owned by New Zealand Bloodstock principal Sir Peter Vela, who has owned a number of event horses with Todd. “Sir Peter and [bloodstock agent] Hubie de Burgh bought Martyn Meade out of the horse with the idea of sending him to stud in New Zealand – he’s got a great pedigree and is a Group Two winner,” Todd told horseandhound.co.uk. “They sent him to me to do something with before going to New Zealand, and then I got a phone call, saying they were thinking of taking him to Australia to run in a couple of races before retiring. ‘And we want you to do it!’ they said. “I had a think about it – and I can never resist a challenge! I’ve had to take out my training licence in a hurry. The plan is to run him in two Group Ones over 2000m in Sydney – the Ranvet Stakes on March 23 and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 13, although he does have an entry in the Doncaster Mile (Gr.1, 1600m) as well as an insurance.” By outstanding racehorse and emerging sire Frankel, Eminent is a son of the Group One placed Kingmambo mare You’ll Be Mine. The winner of the Gr.3 Craven Stakes (1600m) at three, Eminent finished fourth in the Gr.1 Derby (2400m) and later won the Gr.2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano (2000m) at Deauville before finishing third in the Gr.1 Irish Champion Stakes (2000m). Last season the entire’s form dipped and he was unplaced in all of his four runs, three of them at Group One level. “He’s a lovely horse – on the ball, and he is still an entire of course, but he has a great nature,” said Todd, who has done all the riding work apart from the fast galloping work on the horse himself. “I played around with a bit of flatwork when he first came and popped him over a few fences – letting him be a horse, not just a racehorse. He’d probably be a nice event horse, although I don’t think that is what his owners have in mind! “He has worked on the gallops here at Badgerstown [Todd’s yard in Wiltshire] and I have also taken him to other gallops to work alongside other horses. The snow and the equine flu virus have upset our plans a bit and we’ve had to resort to plans B, C and D, but he is now in quarantine in Newmarket and he flies to Australia on 28 February.” “The plan is that I will be over there for six weeks if all goes well,” Todd said. “If everything goes right and he is able to reproduce his best form, I think he could be competitive. Beating Winx in the Queen Elizabeth would be a pretty tall order – but you’ve got to be in it to win it. “Sir Peter is one of the great sporting owners of the world – he embraced it when I started eventing again and has never been afraid to think out of the box. What other owner would give me a chance to do this?” Todd is no stranger to training thoroughbred racehorses, having successfully taken up the profession after the Sydney Olympics in 2000. His biggest successes came when training Bramble Rose to win the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks in 2003 and Willy Smith to win the Gr.1 Wellington Cup (3200m) in 2007, but he hung up his stop watch shortly after the Cup victory. “I’ve toyed with the idea of getting back into training,” Todd said. “But I don’t think it is something I want to do full-time. My wife Carolyn and I would like to have a few horses of our own, and maybe it will develop a bit, but I am not giving up eventing just yet. “It is a great privilege to be allowed to train Eminent, and winning a Group One for Sir Peter would be wonderful.” – NZ Racing Desk and Horse and Hound
