    Top Dog

Could expect that old chestnut might work if it turned it's head with 100m to go but not 450m from home. Agree it is becoming a bit of a joke, the cramping stayer Alotta Talk after 100m, penalty free scr for Sheza Ripper. Thought the run of Our Dazzel last night was worth a closer look, been winning for fun in fast times, lands on the bunny and only has eyes for Beck Eleven on the turn and gets beat in very moderate time.

    2k Madness

From a purely financially driven basis I could for example breed 5 or 6 litters next year instead of the 1-2 I would normally to cash in on this upcoming demand. All well and good but I'd be breeding from bitches I wouldn't have considered breeding from purely for the cash, bitches that were poor chasers or lacked strength or injury prone or all three. If you added in that instead of using the highest quality sire that suited my broodie and substituted with whatever was around locally at low cost the resultant population being sold on and being injected into our racing stock would likely be of lower quality reinforcing bad traits into pups instead of improving the gene pool. This will be the puppy farming model, breed cheap sell them and repeat with no easy foreign substitute. The best bred litters will still be kept by astute breeders and only the second rate pups will go on sale.

    2k Madness

This policy is nonsense on virtually every level. If the argument is taking pressure of rehoming numbers then stop dogs with marring tickets arriving as a last roll of the dice or simply apply the bond to those dogs. Since when did nzgra ever care about overseas owners and running a protectionist racket. We celebrate our horses and dogs going abroad to reap the benefits of aussie racing yet somehow now it isn't ok if money is going the other way, how very Trump. There is also the misconception money goes to oz and never comes back, when in fact there are owners putting prize money back into breeding dogs in NZ providing income and investment back into NZ. Small owners are and always will be the backbone of the sport, people like cole, Harding, wales etc will come and go over the long run but it is the broader ownership of the many that will keep the sport healthy. By removing what is about the cheapest way to get started in the sport by buying an import and having some moderate success you take away that crucial first taste of victory that is the hook for further investment. Buying reasonably priced race dogs in NZ is a nightmare from what I hear. Instead people are looking at pups which sounds all well and good as a breeder myself but as we all know that could go either way. Pups are expensive to buy, rear and breakin with no guarantee of ability. If the pups aren't much good then you have probably lost that owner. NZ doesn't have the infrastructure to breed, rear and breakin a sufficient number of greyhounds at a high enough standard to achieve better wastage rates than we get with imports. If we end up breeding twice as many dogs to achieve the same racing population then the only winners are the bloated puppy farmers and anyone else willing to pump out pups at minimal marginal cost. The welfare outcomes will be horrific.
  6. Pretty common occurrence with the catching pen, dogs know its play time when the lure takes off after the line. More dangerous than the finish on depending on who is driving the lure..
  7. Picked up a lazy 100K for last nights run..

    Do your job Quirk

Our Sadie in Race 2 gets a ticket for marring today and rightly so, was a carbon copy of what Opawa Hop did Thursday yet picks up a FTP ticket instead.
  9. Some very well credentialed dogs lining up this year should be a cracker.. On current ability Weslyn would have a comfortable margin I'd say but the race isn't at Addington. At there best Ebby Ripper and Rippin Sam would be short priced favs, but at there best they wouldn't be anywhere near NZ when Sandown Cup was on last week for 250K. Don't doubt Weslyn will run the trip if she can roll along in front. Billy's Blake is pretty handy at his best but recent racing is at Angle Park which isn't very strong, not contesting Group races. No idea how they trialled. I'd go 3,6,1,2 in Heat 1 and 2,7,4,5 in Heat 2.
  10. That's the equation I face, if I breed a litter I'm expecting to lay out 20-25k depending on how many are born and what sire I use. Racing is a fickle game at the best of times, any possible return is 2-3 years away. If I doubt the sport will be around I'd be a mug to keep going. If you lose all your small owner/breeders the foundations of the sport disappear and your left with a few rotten pillars holding up not much.
  11. Lol, not sure anyone would work for poddles.. How long do we have to wait for leadership in this industry, every CEO I can remember has been telling us about the wonderful job they are doing and how things are all rosey when it has clearly been the opposite. Things get tough and suddenly they are gone. I couldn't care less who the next CEO is but surely we deserve someone who is credible and earns our respect by telling us how it really is, admitting where mistakes have been made giving us some realistic vision of the next decade that we can actually buy into. If it were me I'd dissolve the current Board and ask them all to reapply along with other candidates, completely restructure the powers of the clubs and phase out dog farming model for starters. I can't see a reason why as an owner I should keep investing money in a sport that is run so poorly.
  12. Make that Friday, got a little excited.
  13. Sandown Cup tomorrow night, $250k on the line and drawn to be right in the finish. http://www.grv.org.au/news/2019/05/22/sandown-cup-preview/
  14. Blind Freddy could see the head went in the air and it stopped chasing at sprint boxes, never seen a stayer cramp after 150m. Personally I think punters should at last have benefit of a stewards trial over intended race distance before starting. Zipping Archie another one that comes to mind, had one trial running last over 295m in poor time, goes like busted arse in NZ Cup heat as fav then off to GAP. Zipping Memphis another that shouldn't have been allowed to requally over 295m coming off a ticket over 700m.
  15. Couldn't help but giggle at Trev's flabbergasted commentary on race 10 at Addington, went the early crow and still struggled to believe the replay... LOL
  16. Just ban marring dogs, levy for non chasers. Still leaves opportunity for people to source dogs they cant find in NZ. Without new owners being able to access buying dogs you can't keep the sport healthy. Virtually every successful breeder in NZ started of with an import of some sort, got hooked on the game, imported quality bitches and went from there. I would guess every successful NZ bred dog in the last decade would have an imported bitch in damline no more than 2 or 3 generations past including all of the NZ bread Oaks finalists last night.
  17. The dog was always going back so no I don't really see it would have had any difference as it would be refunded.
  18. That's a bit harsh, first time owners I think who bought the bitch to breed with for good money. From one of the best litters to race in NSW for sometime. Took a mighty gamble sending it to NZ probably with Collar in mind ( I wouldn't have..) and will now foot the bill to have it fixed and sent back to OZ. Agree though NZ shouldn't allow these marring types to come in, non chasers can often be fixed but marring is a different matter.
  19. Well done to the Fahey's got the job done. Trifecta for kiwi bred dogs as well.
  20. Didn't beat the charge I hear. Definitely looks like marring.
  21. Yankiwi, your a bit of a master of video. Does it look to you that someone forgot to put blinkers on Von Strass? Seemed to have raced in them previous starts. Might explain the change in habits.
  22. Incident looks fairly similar to ticket it got at Dapto when lunging outward but I am tipping he will argue the dog was checked by the 7 causing Von Strass to become unbalanced and will get off.. Appeal and the subsequent draw should have been completed today. As it is there is more pressure to have the ticket removed and the draw be valid instead of admitting an error, which is standard operating procedure.
  23. I'm not insinuating undue influence from the trainer at all, just the usual transparency issues. If the trainer was intending to appeal it should have been mentioned in the stipes report I would have expected. It certainly wouldn't be the first time a trainer has appealed a ticket before a big race final.
  24. So Bertie Allen gets a ticket in Auckland Cup heat and isn't drawn into the final, Von Strass gets a ticket in Oaks heat and is drawn into final.. why oh why? GRNZ staff keen to knock off for Easter so hastily get the draw done before stipes report? Be a great injustice if there happen to be a couple of scratchings and there isn't a full field because a dog was drawn into the race that should never have been. Race should probably be redrawn completely with Von Strass out.
  25. As I don't live in NZ, be a bit hard for me to lead this but more than happy to help co-ordinate a plan if someone else is willing to do a bit of the legwork.
