Hi Rees,
I think I read somewhere over the last couple of days that neither Pats Delight or Chase Auckland were being aimed at the Cup.
Cheers.
Robert.
Hi Brodie,
Hi Foyle raced in two races at Alexandra Park one night. The Messenger off 24 yards, and the open class, two races later. How about this one though, at Addington in 1973, runs 4th to Young Quinn in the Allan Matson, and then runs 5th in the very next race. Starts off 40 yards over two miles. He certainly was an iron horse.
Cheers.
Robert.
Gosh, Lunar Chance was murdered in some of his races, but keep going. Mostly driver by trainer Keith Lawlor. Very interestingly, in a couple of his latter races, he was driven by Wes Butt and Felix Newfield.
Oh, "the good old days"!!!
Cheers.
Robert.
Hi Rees,
Sheriff and Pats Delight are very good horses. I would not worry about your concerns on Pats Delight Jewels win. The winner of the 2016, 3 year old Jewels, ran 2nd in last years Cup.
Cheers.
Robert.
All good Flaggy.
I was surprised when I went back and had a look at Cup fields over the 55 years, how, on reflection, how very average a lot of the fields were.
Good luck in the world cup competition tomorrow.
Cheers.
Robert.
Hi Flaggy,
I disagree, I do not think the open class ranks are poor. While there is not a champion around presently, I still think there are at least 10 horses that I would rate very good horses that will ensure the Cup is very competitive and interesting this year.
Anyone can set their horses for certain races, and aim high, whether you get there or not is another thing.
Cheers.
Robert.
I have the answer after contacting the club.
On the recommendation of trainers and drivers, it has been decided to trial 1980 metre races for a period to see how they go.
The programme for the 20th of July shows 1950 metres, but this is incorrect, they are 1980 metres.
Hope this gives clarity for the change in distance.
Cheers.
Robert.
Hi Brodie,
I think most of us are a bit heavier than we were some years ago!!
On a different tack. How about putting a heavier driver on leading up to a big race to toughen your horse up, and then a slighter weighted driver on for the big race. Much like the thoroughbreds dropping in weight and the horse finding it easier.
Cheers.
Robert.
It was a Unversity study I understand. Bear in mind that sulkys are designed especially to allow for the correct weight distribution.
Who would be the current drivers that you would consider in the "solid brigade"?
HI Brodie,
"Back in the old days", an indepth investigation showed, the weight of the driver was not significant on an all weather track, but did make difference on a grass track.
Cheers.
Robert.
Hi Brodie,
Barry Purdon in the last ten seasons has had 196 drives for 30 wins. Not too bad really.
These days Barry would have around 20 horses in work, by choice, and of course not so dominant with a small team.
Cheers.
Robert.
