Weigh In - Cameron Rodger (Entain) interview

https://loveracing.nz/News/42517/WeighIn-25September.aspx  go to 39.00 minute

Not much specifics. Bit vague at times.

However some items.

1. Trackside Premiere channel on Premiere days. Now that is faulty logic. I contend the Premiere lead up should be before the day e.g. Friday nights with say a separate betting pool for viewers. The old calcutta Friday nights were great creating interest amongst sports club people. Also the show must be available say on Youtube particularly on the day for viewers  to go to and fro between channels.

2. Possibility of Free to Air TV. That would be their best achievement so far. Big if though.

3. Retail terminals. Who needs them. Just put up a whole lot of Qrcodes and make the other end attractive. Hopefully that's what Cameron Rodger means by tinkering with the TAB App.

4. Had to chuckle Guerin saying that all club, NZTR and TAB management love Entain. Offcourse they do. They've probably got a pay rise and now leave all their work up to Entain.

5. When quizzed on how Entain would grow the customer base he seemed to suggest that sports betting would be the focus.

Wouldn't Entain be better at sponsoring Free To Air TV instead of BGP type syndicates, Stakes for select races and buying slots in The Everest for I Wish I Win?

Can't see FTA tv making any difference to turnover. Good if they do but it's a drop in the ocean for that purpose. More important things to do and investments to make imo.

Look at world wide trends. Women sport attendance is on the up. e.g. FIFA World Cup in NZ. Although Trackside can be streamed free that's still not satisfactory for getting converts particularly women. I suggest a free to air channel run by the codes in partnership with Trackside is the best way. Many advertisers & sponsors aren't comfortable sponsoring the TAB whereas they are for racing and community events.

Investments where?

I've been talking about that on these social media sites and elsewhere for at least the last 15 years and not going to reitrerate that here. Essentially though, that we offer a much more competitive, attractive and fair wagering product alongside a much more competitive, attractive and fair racing product. Entain is the only organisation I've seen in NZ racing for the last couple of decades that might have a handle on that. If not, it's game over.

Spark sport had trackside, but it didn't shift to freeview.

People may be moving away from normal tv, but streaming everything online, nice to have balance, does everybody want to spend all their life online, I don't, who does?

Tvnz and Newstalk zb have the biggest audience in their various mediums because they are free to everyone.

Come on, if they run it like a business, they have 80% of their top punters, easier to get more spend from these types rather than worry about the 20% buck each way types. Let’s face it, if you can’t afford trackside each month, you probably shouldn’t be betting!

Totally agree. $18.70/month for the Sky Digital Rental holding package. That's a cup of coffee per week. And you have the free streaming option.

The problem being the buck E/W crowd are usually the heart & soul of the sport , they consistently follow it give it a bit of character etc. Imho ignore them at the peril of the sport, we've seen many sports suffer through their lack of empathy/attention to the base of their sport. This can be seen by the lack of media attention racing gets outside of its own propaganda, interest in the sport has to be at an all time low amongst sports fans & sinking faster than the Titanic in that area.

Having said that racing has kicked that lot when they were down for the last decade or more & they are probably not returning free to air or not.

The 18 70 you pay for the Sky box rental is nothing, the question is what do racing benefit from by being on sky's platform as opposed to free to air as in the freeview platform, many people don't have sky, not because of money, just can't be bothered with it.

What would it cost for Free to Air?  As much as is being paid for The Everest slot and promotion?

BTW I find the TAB promotion a bit misleading - The Everest isn't the richest thoroughbred race nor is I Wish I Win the fastest sprinter.

As for the streaming option it is a dog unless you are on high level broadband.  On that point I found Racing.Com a better option for OZ racing.  Especially watching Imperatriz the other night at Moonee Valley.  I actually turned Trackside off on the TV and watched on my phone.  The lead in and post race interviews were great.

It's OK to watch the odd race on ya phone, it's good as a option, after all you can be out and about but  all day, highly unlikely.

The audio stream is poor, well it is when it's busy, they just change channels at their own discretion, often Matt Cross or whoever is previewing or reviewing a race then bang out of nowhere a greyhound race from Timbuktu starts bearing out, not a good listen but then it's fine if your out and about and want to hear a  specific race but listening all day that would be a hard ask.

Uses heaps of data on your phone as well as they broadcast in HD.
