Seems to have developed into that.

So lets try, the most notable 3 NZ horses in the last 50 years, so back to 1968.

I've not said the best 3, as most notable allows a bit of latitude for a variety of reasons.

Sorry Aus horses too easy, Winx, BC and Makybe Diva or Kingston Town

Balmerino - cos a champ here and 2nd in the Arc put NZ on the international stage

Bonecrusher - the best Kiwi since Phar Lap at that time and for along time afterwards

Kiwi - because he captured the public imagination in the toughest test of all

I have only been in NZ for about 20 years so mine are obviously relatively recent:

Jezabeel.

Xcellent.

Zonda.

Steve.

I'm with you on Zonda, Steve

I went and saw Roger James in July of that year, and he said then Zonda would win the Derby.  I have a photo somewhere of Vinny Colgan on Zonda in the parade ring prior to the race.

I wish someone could dig out some of these old videos, they must be somewhere.....PLEASE

Zonda's Derby and Uncle Remus as well, would be great to watch again

Sunline would have to be a cert, surely.

Sunline, Bonecrusher, Kiwi

Yes, Zonda's Derby win was one of the best equine performances I have ever seen, anywhere. What he did in that race, sprint then settle numerous times is something only the very very best can do.

Shame he had soundness issues, could of been anything.

Steve.

Show Gate, Balmerino, Bonecrusher....Lord Module - and the very brave Scotch Tar.           Not to denigrate recent champs Sunline, Black Caviar,  Winx..of course.

I'm beginning to think 3 best is a bit too tough for a 50-year spread..

I've named my three, but am now going to add two more

Sunline, cos I agree with Freda (but cant include Black Caviar or Winx cos they didn't race on NZ)

Uncle Remus what a sight, seeing him at Ellerslie and Trentham at his peak.. the crowd applauding him with 200m to go!! Freakish!

I'm going back...

Grey Way

Tudor Light

Show Gate

These three raced  in top class fields and delighted this observer. That's leaving out March Legend, Copper Belt, Battle Eve, La Mer etc, and the Kiwi bred Dulcify.

I did say most notable therefore surprised no one has put in Simon de Montfort

There must be somone on here with a freehold house thanks to his $180 divvy in the Wellington Cup

on that basis Hesi lets add Jacowils in the Railway and a trifecta around $39k ...bad call, Captain My Captain. Get it sorted.
