BOAYERS 4 MAIJA VANCE - DONATE HERE (please)

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

I am starting this new thread with the full support and blessing of the site's administrators. Thanks CS and Hesi.

I hereby invite all BOAYERS, family and friends to contribute whatever $$ they can to this fundraiser for jockey Maija Vance,
who was seriously injured in a race fall earlier this month and faces a long road to recovery.

The ASB bank account was established today and will remain open for donations from now until 4pm Friday 14 December.

ALL FUNDS RAISED FROM DONATIONS WILL GO DIRECTLY TO MAIJA VANCE THE FOLLOWING WEEK and proof of same will be posted on this site before Christmas Day 2018.

I have not set a target - and won't. It's more about doing something as an online community and lovers of racing. We know the risks of race riding are great; some jocks are luckier than others.

I am very impressed by media reports of Maija's determination and positivity dealing with this injury. Let's give her a hand up, BOAYERS to make the best recovery she can.

ASB Bank account for your donations is:

12-3099-0086230-50

The current balance is $0.00 (but not for long). I am donating $100.00 to kickstart it.

Who knows, we might surprise ourselves and put thousands in there by mid-December. I hope so.

Good Reasons For Me to Donate to this fundraiser:

1. If it was good enought for me to put $ in my TAB a/c today - it's only right I give a larger sum to a good cause

2. A few years back I took raffle tickets on course  to support another injured jockey - won a lovely prize - this feels right to give again

3. It's what we'd expect from a member of the good hearted community that is BOAY

4. The fund is backed by the Mustelid Code of Conduct (Integrity or Death)

5. For Maija

My deposit has now been made (Internet Banking Reference "Jess").  Thanks for setting it up Weasel - and thanks Hesi & the Chief for their support.

Racing: Christmas wish for Cambridge jockey Maija Vance

30 Oct, 2018 5:00am
 3 minutes to read
Injured jockey Maija Vance.

Maija Vance hopes to be leaving the Otara Spinal Unit before Christmas.

The Cambridge jockey has been there since late September after spending 10 days in Middlemore Hospital, where she was treated for the extensive injuries she suffered after her mount Zedsational crashed at the second-last fence at Rotorua on September 16.

Two of her vertebrae in her spine were fractured with another three out of line and she underwent a four-hour operation to have rods and a metal plate inserted.

She also suffered two punctured lungs, several broken ribs, facial injuries including six broken teeth, and she almost bit her tongue off during the smash.

Each day her parents, former jockeys and trainers Bob and Jenny, have been at her bedside and she is looking forward to being released from the spinal unit to live with them in Papakura.

"I'm planning to go home in a month, depending on the renovations being done for me," Vance said. "I really want to get home."

Vance has made steady progress over the last month or so and said she is now more independent in her electric wheelchair.

"When I first got put in it I couldn't sit upright without passing out," she said. "Now I can transfer from the bed to the wheelchair by myself.

"As the broken ribs have started to heel I've got more movement in my upper body, but my back still restricts what I can do with the rods through seven vertebrae.

"I've got no feeling in my waist and have been having daily injections to help prevent blood clots.

"There are patches of hyper-sensitivity in my left leg but it doesn't move. My right leg, I can control a bit but there's a numb and dull sensation."

Vance has been undergoing physiotherapy at the spinal unit and has requested to have the sessions increased.

"Lately I've been having two or three sessions of physio per day," she said.

"I've decided I'm not going to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair and I'm determined to do what I can to walk again."

A daily visitor for Vance is Toro, her mini long-haired dachshund who came back from Australia with her.

"Dad brings him in every morning and Mum takes him home at night after she has been in the afternoon," Vance said.

"He sits on my lap in the electric wheelchair and if he's not there he's lying beside me on the bed.

"When he first came in I told the hospital staff he was a soft toy.

"I love seeing him each day. He makes me feel better."

Vance's positive attitude and drive has also been helped by the constant flood of well wishes from friends, colleagues, racing folk and people far and wide all concerned about the popular 27-year-old, who has enjoyed success in Queensland and South Australia as well as 94 wins in New Zealand.

Grace Willoughby, a Queensland jockey and Vance's former flatmate, is one of those friends who has gone that little bit extra to help Vance.

Earlier this month she set up a website page (https://www.gofundme.com/help-maija-walk-again) and the fund has raised more than $24,000, while Social Racing also started off a promotion to help her.

"I'm so grateful to everyone," she said. "I'm overwhelmed by all the support for me."

hanks for posting that link, Hesi... I was about to do just that myself!

We started last Friday with zip, nothing, nada, zero, BOAYERS. Current balance $310.00 with $100 promised by VS ( who has instructed CS to hand over the $100 he won in the World Cup comp...lovely boy!!). Even my mushy mustelid mind can add that up to $410.00 so far for Maija. Read the article from today's hurdle and you'll get an insight into what she is dealing with, and especially her determination to walk again...asking for more physio sessions already ..great stuff, positivity and willingness to work to get back what has been cruelly taken from her.

So BOAYERS ...WHAT SAY YOU? Please donate to this fund. Open til 14 December, all $$ to Maija directly - and no, I don't know her or the Vance whanau personally. As Rob would say ...CANWEDOOSIT? YES, WE CAN!

ASB Bank account for your donations is:

12-3099-0086230-50

Good work Weasel.  And anyone who thinks they can spare a little doesn't have to declare how much they donate - every little bit will be appreciated. I'm sure,  and will carry with it the best wishes of BOAY'ers. Besides the monetary benefit for young Maija - it shows people care & we all know there is a huge spiritual & mental element in coping with & recovering from these life-changing injuries.

Very quick and easy to do via internet banking and afterall - a donation of $10 is only 2 cups of coffee ..    Cheers, J.

  • 2 weeks later...

Greetings BOAYERS

Disappointing news ...NO INCREASE IN THIS FUND FOR A WEEK. I am putting it down to MELBOURNE CUP WEEK FEVER.

But there is hope...hope that you will find it in your heart (and bank account) to help Maija Vance on the long road to recovery from those dreadful injuries. Every donation helps...see first post in this thread for all the details.

Does anyone have an update on Maija's condition..? I thought I heard alysha collett on weigh in say that she was home and using a walking aid..?

Check out her Facebook page Kopia, it's under Maija Vance, or someone will put up a link

Please note, Weasel intends to close this off on Dec 16, so anybody intending to donate, needs to do it by then

thanks for the reminder, Hesi... it would be fab to get a surge of generous donations in the next 10 days, but I'm aware that many BOAYERS will have already donated to this cause, so I don't have lofty ambitions for the total $$$. The point is, ALL donations are gratefully received and this young woman has a long road ahead, which will be costly and painful. Let's help her along the way.
