Chief Stipe
NZTR Club of the Year Award Finalists Announced New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) is thrilled to announce the finalists for its revamped Club of the Year Awards, set to be awarded at the 2024 Industry Development Day on 26 March. Each New Zealand racing Club was assessed against a performance framework including the following categories: Financial, Racing, Marketing, Governance and Innovation. The selection of finalists and winners will be presented in three distinct categories: Metropolitan, Provincial, and Country Clubs. An overarching Club of the Year Award will also be presented based on these assessments. NZTR Chief Executive Officer Bruce Sharrock is pleased to implement the revised Club Awards framework. “We see our Club Awards as playing a pivotal role in recognising and celebrating the outstanding contributions and achievements of New Zealand’s well-performing racing Clubs.” “We identified some key principles driving this initiative and have aimed to elevate the significance of these Awards by presenting them at our 2024 Industry Development Day held on 26 March,” Sharrock said. Adding further appeal, Entain Australia and New Zealand will provide a $25k prize fund distributed across the three classifications: Metropolitan, Provincial, and Country, with each receiving $5k in prize fund. Additionally, the Overall Club Award winner will be granted $10k in prize fund. Entain - New Zealand Managing Director, Cameron Rodger, is looking forward to rewarding the Clubs for their success. “This year, Entain wanted to award a prize fund for Clubs that will support Clubs and encourage them to engage in activities that promote oncourse wagering throughout the remainder of 2024.” “We look forward to working closely with winning Clubs on bespoke initiatives, all of which will be aimed at driving wagering interest and growth,” Rodger said. NZTR has outlined the finalists for the three categories below. 2023 Finalists (in alphabetical order) Metropolitan Auckland Thoroughbred Racing Canterbury Jockey Club Wellington Racing Club Provincial Otago Racing Club Racing Tauranga Whangārei Racing Club Country Kumara Racing Club Riverton Racing Club Wairarapa Racing Club Corporate Communications New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Contact: Emma Thompson +64 21 071 2929 nztrcommunications@nztr.co.nz

Special Agent
I thought it said well performing clubs. How do those metropolitan clubs qualify? 2
mikeynz
Ellerslie have only raced a few times so they would be excluded at this point, wouldn't you think ? Maybe Avondale is the only other metro track. Edited March 13 by mikeynz

Special Agent
What would Awapuni be classed as? Not one of the three should even be nominees. I wonder what they will spend the prize money on.
Wingman
Next season I would like to see a 'Most Improved Track' award. Meantime to hoist him on his petard a KEY PRINCIPLE NZTR have not yet identified is how to present tracks for raceday
Huey
They have made this a laughable joke , like they do most things. It will be embarrassing for any of those in the City category clubs to win an award.
Extra Dollars
Waverley should have been in the mix.
Extra Dollars
Riverton should be the outright winner ,if Waverley isn't in the mix. Can anyone name any other Club that HASN'T had major money spent on it,but continues to have an awesome raceday surface plus an awesome crowd? Their Easter 3 Day Meeting was a highlight of my childhood.

Well extra dollar bill, I went to the riverton cup meeting some years ago, very popular meeting and a good day out, we didn't return home with the cup though, was the year lil miss swiss played a big divy, enjoy my time there, took timeout to visit Gore Wyndham Winton and ascot park tracks while in the area, I think wyndam and winton meetings had been transferred at that time, still trots there of course. You know this but Foxton is not even a racing club with the ability or thumbs up to run racedays. It runs good trials so could rate highly there.. While Reefton only ran ONE race in 2023 ,and I gather hardly would have emerged from the aftermath of that as potential award winners. But hey ,you managing to bring some negativity to the fore ...encouraging a bit Fluff to fly ! These awards IMO are a good idea...and most businesses/clubs that are in a Co-op ,Franchise or under a Brand umbrella have Awards to recognise Excellence or Improvement and initiatives ! curious
Riccarton could be a sleeper at that price with its far bigger cup day crowd than either of the other two managed and its innovative winter synthetic racing programme. TAB For Ever
1 hour ago, Huey said: Ellerslie $1.10 Trentham $1.85 Riccarton $71 ???? Hahahha,.....bit like the Messara report , folk didnt even read it. The ATR is the merged outfit of Counties and Ellerslie and 2023 all races at Pukekohe. I guess they will still rate well as they a big part of the Partnership and score well in planning ,governance ,initiatives etc. But posters like bloke with Wairarapa and another pushing Rivertons qualities make some good points and these 3 and 4 meeting a year efforts may be enough to get the Cash iin 2023. But the whole thing like any awards.....very subjective even tho there is criteria to be graded by. ..NZ Halberg awards How do you rate Gold medals in a minor sport against a win in a sport most of the world plays or a prominent and popular team sport ? A club I was in once was being rated by the National body and they gave us a 'fail' for Outside Gardens. I rang them and told them[strongly] how much we spent on this and how we went for the Green Native Look and a few weeks later we won the National gardening Award and we hadn't done one thing to the garden. Not worth banging on about especially if you in racing for the Horses !!!! Re the Messara report....History now but he did note the overall 'poor' performance of most clubs financially and in the annual WOF ratings again some below average results. These awards will let clubs know that they have an important part to play in lifting the overall standards and spending a bit of money may be recognised .....A certificate and a bit of cash and maybe an extra date or two if thats what they after. Of course those with paid staff have some edge over volunteer run clubs but Awards allow for that. Entain trying to change attitudes...attitudes are contagious ...is yours worth catching ? But just because Trentham and Riccarton are now supposedly classified as Metro clubs they get in the top three by virtue of numbers not because of performance. Not to mention of course that Riccarton was classified as Provincial when they got their PGF donation from Winnie. Now it looks like we have three tier racing in NZ. 2
