North Island Breeders Stakes - Fall from grace?

The North Island Breeders Stakes was once a time honoured race!

Last night was the 45th running of it, and it was for class 35 fillies and mares, which is surely just taking the piss?

Class 35 and you can start in a glamour event like the North Island Breeders Stakes?

Boudica took it out from the back mark, after sitting parked?

It just shows how lacking for horses Auckland is when Boudica was able to win it?

Boudica has won races but you would not consider her to be anywhere near being a top mare by any standards, and to be able to win a group race against some  average horses is surely showing that there are some major issues within harness racing?

For what's its worth watching Just Believe in the Rowe Cup was as interesting as watching an average workout, to that horse it was.

You are correct, but to be fair, most of the racing at Alexandra Park nowadays is not overly exciting!

”The Candyman” ffs, just had the horse power with both of his big race wins, and both were never going to get beaten with the way the races were run.

Yeah, sad watching Nth Island harness…can’t see it getting better anytime soon

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not . For your sake I hope it was. (must be awful to be sad when the fantastic Autumn racing season on

The last 6 weeks have seen not only the biggest prize money races ever (at Cambridge) with 2 of the best ever to grace the race-tracks winning those 2 Features (Merlin and Just Believe)

but we've seen 4 nights at Auckland with 20 Group Races containing the best horses of Two nations running each week . For every age group and gait.

we've had Self Assured, Don't Stop Dreaming , Muscle Mountain, Merlin , Duchess Megxit , Empire City, Better Eclipse , Paramount Kiwi, Cyclone Jordy, YouretheOnethatiwant, Mach Shard, American Me, OscarB , and 100 more star horses running. Most ran several times .

Nothing to be sad about Newmarket. What could of possibly made it better ? did you think Swayzee should of turned up ? . what would of helped ? a yank turning up maybe?

You're probably right though in that it can't get any better than that , cause it's at it's Premium best for 6 weeks. How fantastic it was. Every good Trainer in the country racing there too. I spose if LEAP TO FAME turned up you would have the current Interdominion Champion to Put the cherry on Top ? , The Aucklanders have got to see the great Interdominion Double Champion Trotter JUST BELIEVE anyway 🏆, as he takes home the TAB slot-trot and the Rowe Cup. Sad for his rivals I spose , but don't blame the North Island . They put on some great races.  was a pleasure to tune in and enjoy.

We have 6 weeks of racing at Brisbane shortly with the Winter Constellations Carnival. the time of year to tune in and see some great racing horses and Not be sad. (bit like Addington Cup week)

Well for starters, the race hadn't been run for 12 years.

By saying R35 and higher simply means it is just available to ALL fillies and mares that have won one race.

Last time it was a 1-win front which is exactly the same.

As a 2700-metre stand at the end of May, I thought it was quite a nice field.

That being said, there are hundreds less horses in the North Island than 20 years ago. It should come as no surprise that all fields are smaller and with less quality.

Why hadnt it been run for 12 years, Spatchcock?

Yes well aware what R35 means, but having class 35 runners in a Group race is pretty average I would’ve thought?
Personally I would not say it was a nice field  at all, but then we see things differently!

Soatchcock, yes that is the problem the North havent got the owners wanting to race horses despite the larger population.

What group race are you talking about ?

Come on Ranga , you know the Brodster is always on the money on Harness matters  except when he confused by his repetition of being repeatedly restricted.Repeatedly restricted ....

He getting confused with a couple of Discretionary Stand start races for filles and mares run earlier in year that are Group 3 races for Trotters !

The Northern Breeders Stakes run at Auckland and the Waikato Trotting Breeders stakes run at Cambridge.....both Group 3 races, stand start over 2700m with a One win front line.

I think Resolve raced in these..imagine a race with Resolve , Revolution , Resolution , Repeat ,Restricted , Repetition and Representative  all lining up ? With Reon or Reg commentating , would be refreshing and revigorating. Call it the Brodsters Breeders Stakes...all bets accepted Tote odds only.

so the North Island Breeders Stakes is now not a Group Race,  due to the fact that they allow class 35 fillies and mares to start?

It was a Group Race previously!

The fact that it has lost its classification,  does not alter the fall from grace that this once time honoured mares race has endured!!!
