Whereas Ellersle spend $55m and can't provide a safe surface on the KM or Grp 1 days let one run a trial. Go figure. Now you're saying we need to spend more money and build a Greenfields site. We'll wasn't Ellerslie essentially that? One wonders why Avondale didn't give them the middle finger.

Doomed
Big weekend in the SI. July's 2yo race coming up at Oamaru. It might be a good pub quiz question to ask how many 2yo races there are in Canterbury during the winter. One would be the answer. Might trick a few people, especially north islanders who are used to at least two 2yo races every week. 13 2yos trialling at Riccarton, about 40% of the total starters, which is impressive considering they don't actually hold 2yo races on the AWT. I can't recall if they mentioned when the AWT was being advocated as the next big thing for Canterbury that it wouldn't be used for actual 2yo races.

The menu for 2 yr olds in the South Island hasn't been too bad this year , often in past Northern horses have come down to boost the numbers. The Listed Champagne Stakes was worth $65 k prior , boosted to $80k this year in early May. Then there were maiden race options and trials leading into $35k race on 22 June at Riccarton . then this week 21 July $35k race at Oamaru ,into Cashmere Plate at Riccarton early August and another race two weeks on. A two year old I involved in from North is looking at coming down to take in one of these races .Southern footing often firmer than North in August ! Chief Stipe
@TAB For Ever aka The Industry Shill - have you noticed the recommendations in the Mesara report aren't working. Let us know when the foal crop increases 20%. Any update on the $55m Ellerslie track upgrade?

That is primarily an initiative of North Canterbury trainers who will do most of the further work to make them happen. That's fine, but there are no trials scheduled south of Ashburton for the next 3 months and I note that the trials schedule for Cambridge tomorrow have been cancelled again due to lack of entries. First set of 4 jumpouts there tomorrow to test the new gates and the system. A lot of people have supported this, notably Darin Balcombe and NZTR. Very well done to all who have contributed. The punters know that when the horses pitch up to race they are ready. I love Spring racing in OZ.

Totally right but the NZTR SOI says "NZTR Board and management will continue to relentlessly improve the presentation and preparation of all facets of our industry, which is paramount to improving wagering growth. The proof will be in the eating I guess, with regular jumpouts at Rangiora now underway. You'd expect a general improvement in strike rates for Canterbury trainers as a result, wouldn't you? A measurable outcome. Edited August 1 by curious

Chief Stipe
Is there a separate trial track at Te Rapa? If not how is it that Avondale has a restriction on the number of horses that can trial which was about 70 horses less than is going around today 4 days out from a Race Meeting this Saturday? curious
Another successful trial set of jump outs at Rangiora this morning. Really, what a waste of a super draining winter track. Probably about a soft 6. Riccarton reporting a H10 this morning.
