Newmarket
Horse has been mentioned on here, but do we, including myself, do we under rate this horse? I know it was a pretty weak bunch at times, but that race cup week that it raced 3 wide and still won. It travelled everywhere, relaxed horse. Won over $1-5mill, won 41 races, came 2nd for times from 56 races, also sired 1000 winners!! Pretty impressive, right up there with christian cullen? Maybe not, but never again will we see a horse so hot on the tote again in most of his races.

Yes he was a fantastic horse, and just the fact he won 41 races mostly in top company speaks for itself, probably doesn't get the accolades it deserves! I know we shouldn't compare era's, but how would he go against Lazarus (a champion in a very weak open class era also) everything training wise, tracks identical etc? Personally for me I have found lazarus's era in NZ and Australia to be the weakest horses in my memory as a harness racing enthusiast ...I don't go on times horses have run because of how the tracks are manicured for fast times now, but for genuine competition to oppose a champion horse. To me the likes of Hands down, Delightful lady, Bonnie's Chance, Armalight raced at a time when there was so much talent around and less racing opportunity as there is now.......and if they raced now with the manicured tracks and same training methods as today, in my opinion they would clean up what's on offer now!!

Seems to have taken in a few cast offs and done well with them.

His opposition were ,apart from Shakamaker and one other Revenes I think , useless to put it bluntly. One of the weakest bunch of youngsters one could imagine which made him look good. Im not denigrating the horses ability just stating the obvious here.

Newmarket
Yes, wasnt a great bunch. But come on, he took on the best in aus and nz, did it the hard way in many races. That winning streak pretty amazing really, regardless of oposition. Look, never was one of my fav horses, but maybe didnt get credit he deserved
Happy Sunrise
When you look at his racing career he ran the times as he held numerous records. He won by margins that suggest nothing of his crop were remotely near him. And that he wasn't always pushed to go even faster. However, he never performed in the open class ranks so he will have to be pigeon holed as one of the best aged grouped pacers of all time rather than an out and out great. But then again who am I to decide aged group racing is of lesser importance than the likes of the NZ Cup. And CUF had personality and a following far more than some 'great' horses so he is an intriguing case for debate.
Basil
He's also been an extremely good sire. Christian Cullen apart, easily the best (off the top of my head) of the home-bred sires to have stood over the last 30-odd years, and possibly longer. His offspring didn't usually have the sheer speed of the Cullen progeny, but were frequently tougher, e.g., Smolda.
