As I understand it, there was never a lot of love lost between the two clubs in the Wairarapa so when Opaki got closed down the Masterton Club was never that keen to move to Tauherenikau. Opaki did have some meetings at marginal times of the year so Tauherenikau wouldn't have been an ideal venue for their dates. Opaki was a pretty miserable place for their Spring meeting, but I always quite liked going to the races there.

I first saw him live at Riccarton in 73 winning the 2000G, then he came back and won the NZ Cup, perhaps the first really good horse I saw live!
ps. Later when I started using the camera! I use to low watch Mr McEwan going about his business on raceday! 12 Gadge was a horse he was training then!
