The Centaur
Well Avondale is not gone (yet). I see the program for Apr 9th has been approved. Would be good if Avondale saw fit to let the public know whats going on.

Chief Stipe
Where the Rabbit? Tauherenikau Abandonment Investigation - NZTR nztr.co.nz Following the Sunday 23 March abandonment at Tauherenikau Racecourse, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR), the Club and NZSTI have been onsite, and have now received an initial report following NZSTI’s investigation. The report outlines: A deep hoofmark was clearly visible, with nothing similar observed in the vicinity. It appears that the horse’s hoof contacted a small, unusually soft spot and has penetrated much deeper than usual. Moisture readings and cores were taken at various points in the track, and they showed good consistency through the profile. Investigations around the deep hoof mark did not reveal any similar soft spots or voids and moisture levels in the vicinity of the hoof mark were 45% and consistent with the rest of the track. It appears the horse has scrambled to regain its footing after the deep hoof mark which has resulted in the slip. Further investigation of the area where the slipping occurred was also normal. NZTR is confident the track was presented well on race morning, with Jockeys and the RIB complimentary of the surface prior to the running of the first event. However, given the unusual nature of this abandonment, NZTR, the Regional Track Advisor and the Club have decided that further investigation is required. The scheduled race meeting on 13 April will no longer be held at Tauherenikau and alternative venue information will be communicated in the coming days. The Club will complete a full investigation before performing a full, detailed renovation which had been scheduled to commence after the April 13 Raceday. https://nztr.co.nz/news/tauherenikau-abandonment-investigation

Chief Stipe
Did a rabbit really dig this hole? Regardless why couldn't they put some soil in it and tamper it down?
curious
Not unless your rabbit has a post driver! With respect to your second question, I've no idea. Maybe that was not the only problem? Another question though. How could that not be spotted when the track was walked? Though watching the stipes doing the track inspection at Riccarton on Saturday, it appeared they only walked between the 50m and 150m mark. Freda
That's terrible. Wasn't someone singing the praises of the track manager there? Another few weeks and hay could be cut off that.
curious
The hole aside, no wonder horses were slipping. I thought they were supposed to mow to 100mm or something. That's nearly as bad as the CJC Cup day debacle.

Several years ago I walked the track at Avondale a couple days before a meeting or should I say the dog walked me. Half way up the straight he started digging centre track and proudly brought up a golf shaft with the club head missing. The end was very sharp. I took the shaft to the then CEO and he rather abruptly said "put it there" no thankyou no alarm no nothing.

Around about 2005 a horse I had a share in was racing at Ellerslie. I was staying and the Novotel next to the course and as is my little idiosyncrasy I like to walk the track on raceday. Anyway I was up at sparrows fart and walked the track and was shocked at the state it was in. I went back to the hotel and met the trainer Jim Wallace at breakfast. I said you have to come look at the track. So we went back and walked the entire circuit accompanied this time by Nigel Tiley who had a horse in the Open Sprint. He was appalled at the state of the track and immediately scratched his horse. Jim said if we hadn't come all the way from the Wairarapa he'd have scratched as well. He also said he wish he hadn't walked it. We were wandering up the straight and I found this hole in the finishing lane. A bit bigger than a horses hoof in circumference and went down about 4 feet. We signalled to the track staff who didn't say much but to make sure it was fixed we went and tore a branch off a tree and planted it in the middle of the Ellerslie straight.
