I think I said it would be hard to head him off in his category and he represents the industry well. How does that say Sam is undeserving of the award? I'm all for promoting young people in the industry, there's no growth without them. I can see where others are coming from though when more than a few of the winners are employed by NZTR or sponsors of the event. The womans winner in particular is absolute laughable! Quote

Exactly. Some worthy winners of course but the whole thing smacks of nepotism. Folks will not support people and organisations whose main aim in life is feathering their own nests. Is it really necessary for the expense of glitz and glamour. 2 Quote

(as mentioned) Look at MLB, every game the public picks the player of the game.. and mass import into who picks the players for the All Star game, similar for NFL.... Quote

The're all laughable, reminds me of a sideshow announcer at the Fair yodeling into a loudspeaker... "every player wins a prize" FFS ! Better suited to that Face/Arsebook where all the effusive backslappers can shag each other from their keyboards. 3 Quote

Was training horses since his grandad Herb showed him a horse. Herb gave up training when Sam was about 4 years old. I guess training racehorses at such a young age wasn't a health and safety issue back in the '90's. Quote

I doubt you been laughing for a year...you come across as too miserable for that ...but when these excellence awards began last year you labelled them laughable/jokes . At least you consistent and your bitterness permanent ! When Chief eventually asked you if you liked anything at all about NZ racing you replied ....yes , The Cossack. i don't think the poor horse has won since ! Is there anything else you like about NZ Racing . Any other priceless quotes to remember you by ? Quote

No, you made a statement about Sam learning his training trade from his grandfather Herb. Now it's Wallace Young. I thought he was quite an old trainer in the 1970's. I don't think meeting someone a couple of times gives automatic authority on all things Sam. 1 Quote

I didn't say I was an authority but hell I'm not one of the people diminishing his achievements. You chose one aspect of what I said which may or may not have been an embellishment when congratulating him on his achievement. I'm surprised you haven't come to the defence of any of the female award recipients who have been rubbished by @Huey. Quote

Because they don't listen to Grumpy Old Men on the internet and know that they work bloody hard in a tough sport that needs as many young people as it can get. Afterall who would want the industry run by you? Quote

No one is diminishing anyone , but there is a real theme to these awards and it isn't achievement. 2 Quote

There you go you just did what you said you weren't doing. It bloody well is achievement and I bet all the award recipients have done more in racing already than you have. Special Agent Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago I agree with quite a few on here and am not a fan of awards for awards sake. The number of training wins clearly puts Sam ahead of his peers on merit. When there is a system where you can nominate yourself, those who work for sponsors of the event are not excluded, non-connectivity is intimidating etc, I think it's a little bit pointless. It's rather school-ish. Quote

Special Agent Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago Am I? Just because you get an award it does not mean you are the hardest worker in the industry. There are some who couldn't give a toss to have an award on their shelf. Feeding their kids, or taking them on holiday might be more meaningful. Quote
