Addington Friday mares race 6700 win pool quaddie topped up to 20000....60000 stake

Continues to emphasize how popular those country cups races are, interestingly the Oamaru winner paid  5 80 on the tote, 3.80 fixed.

But maybe the Friday night figures are affected by the tennis semi final, should never under estimate how other events at certain times can influence turnover, maybe some just switched races off with a 5 set epic on other channel.

The TAB turnover is exaggerated by all these bonus csh, bonus bets and the bets being refunded if your horse doesnt win but runs 2nd or 3rd!

This would clearly distort the true amount of turnover as they will be getting no return whatsoever from the money they are given out.

They do this to try and  get the smaller punters hooked on racing and turn away the loyal punters who will dramatically increase turnover?

tennis semi final effecting betting figures?

why would that be anymore of a factor than any sport.Just can''t see why a tennis semi final would have more impact than any warriors game or any  rugby or cricket on at the same time on friday nights.

I did notice today on trackside the off course and on course presenters talked about tennis for the last minute and a half of pre race talk twice for races.

Personally i had no idea why they would spend the most importnat part of  lead in coverage talking about tennis.Apparently venus williams still has a powerful forehand.Great.  I do know shes only won 1 singles game in the last 6 tournaments shes played,but obviously the forehand gets the presenters more interested than the races they are previewing..

as to the quaddies. Todays quaddie had a $1,400 carry forward and the final pool was actual money invested.

Games like Friday nights, Alcatraz playing, the longer it goes many get on the bandwagon, many change channels, like it or not.

Before Sunday racing many clubs raced Friday, or moved to Monday when All Black's played, reason being racing was on a hiding to nothing, that's kind of sorted itself with Sunday Racing, night Rugby, don't underestimate the drawing power some sporting events like Friday draw, and as many bets are only placed in the last 15 minutes, so if people switch off you see the result, if that's not the case then a 60000 mares race at Addington pales into insignifacance as opposed to a country cup race at Oamaru on a Sunday afternoon, it's just the way it is.

In it's own way it shows what happens when 2 networks on TV have news at the same time, one strangles the other,  but both dont maximise their audience who wants to watch 2 bulletins  even if you can watch one on  delay?

Seems Sth Island grass racing tracks are dominated by those up front, regardless how big the tracks are, i remember 30 or 40 years ago, more where winning from further back, especially at the bigger tracks like motukarara & Methven. Whats the reasons? 
1, Drivers rating races far better, although looking at times, not setting records each week. 
2, Tracks are now set up differently, grass seems a heap longer nowadays, horses seem to struggle to get through, soft or form. 
3, Less lead changes, too many relatives and mates dictate races.

What other reasons, i used to love grass track racing, but the leaders bias is annoying, one reason i liked the grass was most had a chance, but not anymore.

Oamaru has always been leader biased. Reefton is another one.  Slightly more entertaining if it is wet. Motukarara with a bit of sting out of the track and they can win from anywhere and pay anything.
