Chief Stipe Posted May 26 Posted May 26 $1.5million for G1 NZ 1000 Guineas Winner Captured by Love - Te Akau Trio All Sold Tara Madgwick - Tuesday May 26 Te Akau Racing boss David Ellis has had a lot of luck with Magic Millions having secured Group I winners from the Gold Coast yearling sale as well as selling Group I winning mares through the auction house and Captured by Love combined both of those things. Captured by Love won the G1 NZ 1000 Guineas - Race Images Purchased for $525,000 by Te Akau Racing from the Milburn Creek draft at the Gold Coast in 2023, Captured by Love was fast and precocious winning her first four starts at two. The daughter of Written Tycoon blossomed at three for Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson to win the Group I New Zealand 2000 Guineas beating top class filly Alabama Lass. Consigned for Te Akau in the Newgate Consignment, she was always going to be a big ticket item at this sale with a strong Black Type pedigree to back her up and was knocked down for $1.5million to Sheng Geng, China. “Captured By Love has come the full circle. This is where I bought her for $525,000, and to win seven races and to come back and get $1.5 million, Australian dollars, is a big thrill for us,” said David Ellis. “She has been brilliantly promoted by Newgate and Magic Millions and we’re very happy.” Quintessa, a two time G1 winner - image Race Images The Newgate Consignment featured two more mares sold for Te Akau with dual Group I winning Shamus Award mare Quintessa sold for $800,000, also to Sheng Geng, and Group III winner My Lips Are Sealed sold to New Zealand based nursery Rich Hill Stud for $180,000. Ellis was well pleased with the whole sale and in particular Quintessa. “Very happy with the price level she reached,” he said. “I can’t wait to see her yearlings at the sales as I think she’ll be a really good broodmare.” Quote
Chief Stipe Posted May 26 Author Posted May 26 Thanks @Reefton and @Huey for the online provocation three years ago when I was asked to choose a yearling from that years Te Akau Magic Million purchases. I convinced a very good friend of mine to buy into the Magic Millions Filly's syndicate of that year and they have had an absolute ball. 1 Quote
Shad Posted May 26 Posted May 26 Bit of pocket money for the owners, hopefully there’s some left in the kitty for them, a bonus no doubt, as a majority of us go into them as a passion, anything else a bonus. Quote

The purchase price for the two yearlings combined was $750k. They won close to $900k in stakes. The Victress sold for $35k. Captured By Love $1.5m. Many of the syndicate were first time owners or owners that hadn't had much success. So a Grp 1, 2 Grp 2's and 2 Grp 3's was quite an achievement and thrill for them. Quote

Great result for them, couldn’t ask for much more being a first timer and having success with that, very hard to replicate, hopefully their hooked now. Quote

I wouldn't say "hooked" but keen to go again when they see the right horse. Unfortunately experienced the highs of winning and the negative side of the disillusioned. Quote

Good lesson on the ups and downs down, plenty of ups all the same, good luck to them finding the right one, they’ll need luck on their side no doubt Quote
