Fred
Santa Anita have banned Lasix and whip use.
SLB2.0
Good that they have banned Lasix. I can't imagine whip use comes into horses breaking down.
Freda
Yep, good on them indeed. That bone remodeling stuff, the name of which escapes me, I believe may be indicated in some cases too.

Chief Stipe
Because all gallopers bleed.
Fred
Lasix causes severe dehydration, horses supposedly run faster after losing 10-15kgs. Severe dehydration also causes thumps in horses -a few years ago a couple of stablemates won black type races and suffered thumps
curious
It's a tricky one eh? Like all meds there are benefits and risks. The evidence is solid that Lasix reduces the incidence and degree of bleeding. This was just republished last month though. https://nationalhbpa.com/no-lasix-racing-good-idea-or-failed-experiment-2/ Of course the other downside of widespread use as in the US that is not often mentioned is that because better performed horse are more likely to become reproductive are we continually producing more and more horses with a greater propensity for bleeding? We go down the German rowt of not breeding from Bleeders... ...the same goes for the whip... You breed out the less than genuine horses who don't want to race... ...nek minute Germany Derby winners throughout the World winning Melbourne Cups again.... ...and Winx likes can't use Lasix in training either Edited May 28, 2019 by Thomass
Freda
I stand to be corrected....and as a horse lover of course the idea of a horse drowning in its blood is abhorrent...but I cant bring to mind any horse dying on a NZ track as a result of EIPH. Thomass
Meanwhile in NZ... Parkes whips his neddy 25 times in the last 400M in the first... ...and doesn't break our whip rules... ...ask yourself why the Young Generation don't give a toss about the Racing Industry? Freda
The day whips are banned - or their use drastically reduced - there will be a good number of jockeys looking for a new job.... Edited June 2, 2019 by Freda

And punters walking away also Freda, so the others will have to look for new jobs as well. The whips they use today are not like the old days. Hit yourself with one and see if it hurts. As you know many horses are bludgers and if you take the whip away they simply won't try. The whip these days is more about the noise.
aquaman
Whipping horses with a feather duster is not cruel to horses regardless of the amount of times the horse is struck. Just more pc bullshit. Now if you ask about perception, then the optics do look bad, but then the optics do not hurt the horse. So why the fuss, just grow some balls, and tell the snowflakes to get lost. Keep the whips. 1

Not a good comparison according to the science. https://www.paulickreport.com/horse-care-category/horses-more-sensitive-to-pain-than-previously-thought/ It hurts. I've done it accidentally and that through a rubber boot. Try it again and put some effort in or bend over and get the Mrs to have a go. Why would punters walk away? Because they can't figure out which horses are genuine and try from encouragement rather than pain?

If it's about the noise then do away with the whips and let the jockeys yell at the horse -most of them have a fair bit to say anyway 1
