Gammalite
Don't know the Herbert on this thread , but a funny story , with the lovely bloke in this photo CLIVE HERBERT. quite a wealthy man, involved in football, (son Ricky captained and/or coached NZ soccer team for a few years) Clive purchased METAL MICKEY from Graham Court for a 'Hefty sum' and brought him up to Papakura where he lived next door to where I trained mine, and I often would help Clive out, while he was away on business or football, and tend his horses. MICKEY was a most beautiful chestnut (like Gammalite) and could go like a rocket !!!! he was unbelievable. wish every horse was like him (or Gammalite) We punted the crap out of the market for his first Auckland start Feb 1985, sent out favourite, and then some bugger fell, and tipped Mickeys driver out !! hahaha was broke again lol. not to be deterred , backed up again , and got rolled by Luxury Liner. So off to Wellington to try and get some form/ money and beaten first night again !. take out a loan and punt second night ?? youbetcha !!! and Mickey wins ! paid $1 .50 I think hahaha I laughed so hard , it was funny.lol.... Straight after that Clive set him for the GN Derby !! a hard task ? and he put a junior driver on !! I said "Who's that bloke ? are you going crazy?" lol. A youthful Anthony Butt ! Ants steers him brilliantly, to 2nd in the derby behind Nardinski and Jack Smolenski. THAT was a hard Derby.!! Future NZ CUP winners 'Luxury Liner' and 'Master Mood' were rank outsiders finishing down the track?. 'Placid Victor' unplaced too. Gammalite got lucky in the future thank goodness , and picked up the 4th placegetter 'Frederick' , couple of years later to bash around with in Queensland. and get back some of the heavy losses that the beautiful horse METAL MICKEY imposed on us. hahahaha. (didn't back him in the Derby)

I wonder how much he paid for a horse that has had 32 starts for one placing? And why would anyone buy a horse like that? Mindboggling. 1

True gentleman.
Marshy
The commentator on Trackside last Sunday said he is a Australian trainer/driver who is a mate of Bruce Negus and is visiting NZ.

Every dog has its day, remember few years ago he had one called mimi sirati watched it plod around the smalls in Canterbury, went ok without much luck, but when he bought it to the coast came up trump's at 40s ended up down south, never know new trainer may make him turn a corner. Perhaps. The horse ran to his usual form in first start for Negus last Sunday. The horse drawn #1 this Sunday so could sneak a place. Wait and see. 😆

It has s little bit of ability, but has been overraced and prob needed a break. Did show that it should win a race about 10 starts ago but continued to race it every week and finish midfield. Maybe it could go to Amber Hoffman as we know how much she improved the Spitfire!
