How to get on-course participation back FULL at Alex Park

Recommended Posts

Got to get Saturdays back. During the day.

Target families for general admin. BUT need to focus on Entertainment. (Can also still have those indoor drink/dine packages going too simultaneously).

Auckland has the numbers re population.

Could start charging again e.g. $10-$15 or even $20 per adult, kids under 18 free. Any child coming unaccompanied aged between say 15-17 pays $5-$10 entry.

All adults 18 + get a $5 free bet.

This free bet can be used only for a race of any type of bet at course Alex that day Harness.

Therefore every adult there will be having a minimum of a $5 bet which will help increase turnover (main goal).

IT MUST BE A FAMILY DAY. Bring out the Entertainment between races or having running continuously. THIS IS A MUST.

It could become a once a month, e.g. every 1st Saturday of the month is the Alex Park family entertainment day at the races.

The remaining charge that comes from the entry fee goes towards costs for entertainment.

Haven’t thought yet what entertainment. But this is something that will get peeps back on-course.

Any other ideas post on this thread.

Think Dougie had an idea to help increase on-course participation, which was on Cup Day to give out vouchers or something for other meetings in year. GREAT IDEA!

Jeezus wept.

How low we are falling.

Do not understand there your post Kods and no that is not an idea.

Maybe you do NOT realise that Cambridge the Jewels this year had a similar promotion re entry fee e.g. $20 within that entry fee was a $5 free bet! This $5 fee bet contributed to THEM having the HIGHEST turnover EVER in HISTORY of JEWELS.

Its nearly 2022.

Doesn’t ness have to be a Saturday, actually could be a Sunday. Family Day at Races.

Grass track meeting have some form of entertainment. Bouncy castle, pony rides etc. Cambridge has a kids area, Jenga & so forth.

Clearly YOU DO NOT GET IT & are stuck Living in the Past.

There is like that old dirty looking grandstand that literally NO-ONE uses. (1 closest to the new apartment complex).

What purpose does it serve nowadays other than being an eye sore & taking up space & blocking views.

Why do they have that still up? If it was bulldozed down it would create space for a nice entertainment area.

Cambridge also has in summer, face painting, puzzles & so forth for kids & also a DJ in the designated DJ area.

Wonder what plans they have for that area at Alex ... ? Is it just going to continue to just sit there ... ?

Drags the look of the place down too. Especially with the nice apartment complex next door.

Karrots, yes we do need to get people back’ oncourse, for thr same of racing!

It is just not Auckland, Addington doesnt get many oncourse nowadays, all the regulars just do not go anymore, and there are several reasons for that!

Not sure charging people will get people oncourse and do not think  that will work!

Yes Auckland has got a big population and you would think that they would have heaps turn up at their meetings.

The dining is the reason that the crowds are bigger on certain nights rather than the actual racing!

To be fair Auckland racing is downright boring compared to Addington so they are battling.

Saturday nights would be better to attract crowds rather than Friday however I believe that the clubs just dont want to work on that night.

Hey Brods,

Great reply & one that doesn't involve human faeces or going low apparently.

Yeah dunno if any of my ideas would work, just wanted to start a brainstorm or list of ideas, as we (BOAYers) seem to be moaning just a lil bit lately lol including me & HRNZ said they have not had much feedback when opening up the floor to things. That must be disappointing.

Wasn't meaning ALL meetings to charge. Just particular ones. That has worked e.g. the Jewels charged & peeps PAID. Infact some were paying as much as $300 ish.

Alex is in currently in a somewhat great central location. This may not be 1 day, should it move to very South Auckland or North Waikato. Why don't that utilise this reach of general Auckland population while they can?

Lets start a BOAY brainstorm list for ideas. Doesn't mean ideas have to be used but ideas can be moulded & bounced around.

* UPT ENTERTAINMENT on offer BIG TIME

* Get rid of wasted/ non used stand Alex.

* Give out vouchers at BIG DAYS for peeps to have an incentive to return to a normal meeting e.g. Cup Week.

* Charge on certain special days e.g. Jewels, maybe FAMILY DAY.

Need more ideas BOAYers 😄

Here is a question for you Brods, so just stay focused & if you could please just answer the question only.

Brods is invited to go to a fashion parade. Brods goes. Brods has to sit outside for this fashion parade, in a stand. Its not bad, a lil old but a pass, just in this day 2021. Its a lil cold windy, hoping the rain doesn't come down. So Brods takes a raincoat.

Brods friend who insisted Brods come along to check out this fashion show as Brods friends is a BIG FAN, suggests taking binoculars. Brods isn't sure exactly why.

Brods sits down at event. Not much atmosphere as they are the only ones in the stand apart from 1 small group of others. Hardly excitement plus stuff.

Brods awaits the 1st fashion show as the entrants parade nearby. Now the official parade has began, but WAIT the entrants are moving & the actual parade is being held 100 metres away. Too far away for Brods to see & Brods didn't bring binoculars, unlike his super fan friend.

After JUST 2 minutes parade is over. Wasn't that great friend says. Brods thinks otherwise. Didn't see a thing & was over as quick as it began. Now we wait 25 minutes, just SIT HERE look at the sky Brods friends says with happiness. Brods isn't a drinker nor a better on which fashion outfit will win each parade so just sits & waits, while his friend goes & bets on which person/outfit will the next.

This is rinsed & repeated until after the 5th parade were Brods just can't bear the boredom any longer. Itching to leave asks friend how much longer. Friend repeats with excitement another 5 more parades. Brods sighs thinking why did I come its getting cold now.

Question - how does the story end?

Does Brods vow to never go back again due to not wanting to sit thru such boredom again.

Yes/No?

Off course he wont be back until it is improved.

By turning away participants it is always going to go down hill!

Are they listening though?

Next question, how to improve the experience?

So they walk away thinking they may one day come back & also tell their friends/family how they went to races & it had xzy there & as a result they should go 1 day too as they recommend it as being a GREAT DAY OUT.

I believe saturdays aren’t possible as aussie won’t play our racing over there on a Saturday as they have so much other racing; so that’s a massive loss on turnover etc… but otherwise would be a good idea!

I see, roger that.

Off topic just as we await Brods reply,

Its quiet up here in Auks. Suns out tho ☀️

Saw your horsey qualified other day 🐴

Remembered seeing you brought it from yearling sale.

Wondered how was progressing.

Good luck with it, Karrots shall keep eye out for it 👀

There has to be atmosphere or people will not come back!

Unfortunately harness racing has been in a spiral downwards for a few years now and it just has to get the younger generations involved or it will be last one out, turn out the lights!

Addington before the first lockdown last year used to still have People turning up to bet and watch the racing!

Unfortunately with that many that were going arent bothering anymore and also the Club seems to solely want everyone to be in Spectators.

Many of The punters that used to frequent Addington do not bother as there is absolutely no point, as there is no benefit!

What I would suggest is for HRNZ to have a word in the NZ TAB’s ear and get them to encourage punters to offload and also to have the limit for having to bloody identify yourself to say $10k.

No one in NZ is bothering to money launder on racing at $1K!!!!!!!!!!

So how do you do that? Create atmosphere?

Beyond those that attend & pay $50-$150 to go into those corporate all inclusive food/drinks packages. Which often are a work do, 1-off, have a great time, but once off as work paying, or maybe its a group get together for a birthday, again a one off. Main focus is like NZ Cup drinking (which again is mostly a once off for these peeps). Nothing wrong with that, point being one-off.

How to get young kids of today along to races, to later in future life share their experiences as older folks, saying I used to go to the races with my parents over summer during daylight savings, as many of those did on the Vivid Memories thread?

Is it even possible? There are alot of Can’ts & No’s I have noticed. Is this part of the problem?

Simple, you attract back the punters that were there before and they bring people with them etc.etc.

Without adults bringing their kids or their mates and friends then harness racing is  history !

The TAB think that they are being clever by restricting punters and increasing yield but as I have been saying for years, it has negative consequences which are coming home to roost!

As I said before it has spiralled downwards at Addington over the past few years but was accentuated by the Lockdown last year.

There is not enough people going now to open up the bars and punting windows upstairs  due to the dwindling attendees!

Ok have added to list.

1. UPT ENTERTAINMENT on offer BIG TIME

2. Get rid of wasted/ non used stand Alex. (Updated Elijah advises stand most likely to disappear once sold as area up for sale)

3. Give out vouchers at BIG DAYS for peeps to have an incentive to return to a normal meeting e.g. Cup Week.

4. Charge on certain special days e.g. Jewels, maybe FAMILY DAY.

5. Create atmosphere beyond those in corporate ALL inclusive rooms - food/drink.

6. Unrestrict restricted punters, so they can bring back peeps back to race-course their kids, friends & family.

Ideas still open 😃

Hey no, BUT can make enquiries just for you, about Butt Pinchers 😁🙊

$20 less $5 per adult so $15 x say 1000 peeps is $15k to put towards Family Day Entertainers

1000 people in the City of Sails should be No problem. Walk in the park target.

I like my Idea.

This could be a thing. A tweek here & a tweek there.

Who's gunna come along to Karrots Sunday Family Funday at Alex Park?

Target Mums & Dads,

Solo Mums, stay at home Dads, families, friends of theirs, the works.

Make sure drink stands easily accessible for soft drinks & easy to access wine/beer. So parents can chill with a drink while kids play & are entertained. They can attend with mates.

Kids will have a ball & be wanting to return.

Parents will think cheap 1-2 day of entertainment. Kids out of house. Off internet iPad.

Hey friends they say to each other lets do this again next month!

Kids be like YES please, lets go back.

Bingo Alex P is rocking on.

Alex P Complex commercial tenants are happy e.g. brings a lot of potential foot traffic to area. Eg Lone Star etc.

Really think something like this could work.

Market it hard.

Kids pop up tote could be - random kids line up, get a horse number, if their horse wins they come back to pop up tote stand & win something - a lolly or something lol. Something along those lines. That way they stop & watch each race.

Nite ALL - ideas still open 😃
