muzenza365
I watched a race at Timaru and was stunned by the ride on Madam Sequoia. This mare was favourite and rightly so, given her form ,but the ride was terrible. What is frustrating is with the Stewards that presided over the meeting. They did question her over the ride, which Stevie Wonder would have seen, but they did nothing, not even a warning,I just find this unexpectable. This is why NZ Racing is light years behind Australia. Punters there get protected when incompetence is shown by Riders. If you have a look at some of J MacDonald's charges he has had to defend and not always successfully for not giving a horse every possible chance and then have a look at Madam Sequoia ride, they are light years away in NZ on policing races. I do not enjoy bagging Jockeys, but this ride certainly needed a charge laid. This way the rider who admitted she got it wrong in the report may learn something and punters may get protected from incompetence from our Stewards. They did find B Murray for using the whip excessively , which may appease the animal rights group, but start looking at the real issues that affect the punting lifeblood of NZ racing like this example i have given. Freda
Have to take issue with your comment in this case - although I am usually very critical too. I know Matt and Sarah well, the mare is quirky and has her own ideas about what and how she does things. A 'conventional ' ride may, and in fact has, caused the mare to switch off and refuse to compete. She doesn't like to be near other horses, and has ( I believe) been difficult to train and place. Kin Kwo won on her a while ago, storming down the outside away from traffic...but underwhelming in the extreme in subsequent starts. I'm not getting into what the rider should or could have done better, but just thought a wee bit of background might help make sense of what seemed to be a horrid display.

I haven't seen the race and won't comment on the specific ride however, not only is there a glaring difference between NZ and OZ but also North vs South. But the most inconsistency is between the Gallops and the Trots in NZ. Drivers are getting put out for months for what the judiciary declare as incompetent race driving. I think they have gone way over the top in some cases but as you say stuff all is done with the gallops. But I guess it is part of the written and unwritten dispensation given due to the lack of Jockey's.
Shad
Agree with freda have backed this mare a few times, and even when she jumps well, likes to drift and do her own thing, even with her former trainers , but no question of her ability, Putin a big run fresh up at riccarton for fourth paying 80s, although this day she came home via the rail, thought on that run be a cert next start, disappointing run I thought even though better than it probably looked, didn't see her in next start that she won, the thing that I liked at the time was the change of trainer, sometimes, its easy to think when they race from the back and charge home, some think well if we ride her handy and she will finish the race off the same way, how many times have we seen that end in disaster, she certainly is quirky. Still looked pretty bloody average Pam(have to admit I couldn't ride one around the birdcage and do not accordingly like to be critical). I thought she would have got a holiday and was pretty astounded at not even a warning Put it this way if it had been CW Johnson a few years back they would have thrown the bloody book at him.

Yeah, they sure would have. Remember C George trying to tell the winningest rider in NZ of all time, how to do his job?
