last race at oamaru turnover.

If you had been watching the turnovers today you would have noticed they weren't very large.

But what was very noticeable was the last race, which probably wasn't the strongest 1 win race you would see, seemed to clearly have the highest turnover.

To me it was yet again proof that the average punter is just as happy to bet on any race ,as long as they think they can make a $. Had it been a 6 horse field of higher quality with a short priced favorite, punters wouldn't have bothered.Just look at the turnovers they get on races run at auckland as proof of that.

So the key to get punter participation is more about the exposure a race gets,in this case the time slot on a wednesday just before tea and not having a dominant favorite that puts the average punter off.

Yep - the grab a couple of jugs after work and before getting home for tea crowd.  Plus an awakened OZZIE punter.

Just looked at the tote pool showing when race closed for the main pacing race tonight at addington. The oamaru race run on a wednesday afternoon had more in the tote pools. And that oamaru race the commentator referred to a few times as lacking any form and was for 1 win horses.

The point is some of these races on friday nights would be better off run as midweek races as they are turn offs from a betting perspective. If the point is to maximise turnover on a friday, why have small fields with $1.70 favorites as we seem to have seen all night tonight.

Give us some lower grade, even betting fields to at least encourage punter participation.

So following your logic a 8 horse field with a $2.20 favourite would attract more punting?

If you mean my logic is an 8 horse field with a $2.20 favorite would attract more betting than a 6 horse field with a $1.70 favorite.Well yes i think thats a given.

It's not a "given".  So is it the $1.70 favourite that limits the betting?  After all a $1.70 if it is considered value is a good return on an investment.

It depends whether you are a serious punter wanting to make money or you are someone that bets for the fun of it!

A serious punter who wants to make money will look at a field and see whether there is something he wants to back!

If there is a horse he likes he will compare it to others and look at whether it is worth a go when compared to the risk and odds!

What I picked up early on is  that most punters dont actually really know what they are doing and that is why they generally dont win consistently.

Winning punters are ones that have a bit of ability plus do their homework!

This is why the TAB restrict the punters who put effort in!

The fact remains that punters are not treated equally and the NZ TAB are acting morally and ethically badly!

It is a gambling industry and they should be taking the good with the bad.
