You Wellington Cup officianados help please.  Daughter who lives there wants to book for Cup day.  Wants to know where the best place is for just a social day with her mates.  She is not a racing person but like most of the 20 somethings likes a day out.

I've never been there but told her I knew just the place to find out.

Help me please!!

Thanks guys

Haven't been for a couple of years, but unless they want to spend megabucks, for twenty somethings having a social day out, I'd say just a general admission ticket ($50) and mix and mingle from there.

Yes, I think its just a matter of turning up and getting pissed. Is it really $50 to get in? There are virtually no decent facilities and not much atmosphere. I hadn't been for many years (27 years or more) but ended up going a couple of times a few years ago, cost about $30 I think. It was really depressing for someone who attended about 12 Wgtn Cups in a row in and around the 80s, early 90s.  It's quite a sad and depressing day out really when you think what it used to be like. Much worse than NZ Cup Day even.

When Nomates surfaces, after sobering up after a long drive home from the winners circle, he'll help out, no one knows Welly like NM......I would recommend the Black Cat in Mt Vic, but last time I was there the place was full of smoke, Rothmans, Marlboro's that sort, and  no-one drank beer, red win and whiskey straight was the go so I'm disqualified.

Well Joe didn't take much to put me in a position to need to sober up , the drive home was great , missus travelled in her mates car so peace and quiet and good music had by all (me) .

As for recommendations , no hope , decades since i partied up in Wellingtoon . Now Matamata is different story , plenty to offer and great food options as well , two great nights out had by the team , still a great place to party .

Yes. Reefton was always an important lead up venue for SI trainers pointed to Trentham so it makes sense.

I think many moons ago the late Ray Harris taking Brutus and Scoth Mist up to Auckland after previously racing at Reefton, my memory not what it used to be, so stand to be corrected.

Brutus and Scotch Mist went to Avondale, which used to be early Dec if I recall correctly, so they would have been using Auckland as a lead up to Reefton.

Reefton if PM me, I may be able to help. I organise every year a group of around 20 for Cup Day. We book a BYO area where we can take in a good quantity of alcohol although that is not what the day is about.

We start with brunch in the cafe across the road from the track. We than have lunch delivered and after the races we roll out Chatham Islands crayfish and salads rolls etc. and party until 8pm when a curfew is enforced.

Yes I have an idea Flying View might have won the sprint at Reefton then went on to win the Telegraph. Not sure re the Ray Harris ones but Brutus and Scotch Mist won the double at Greymouth at the old November meeting one year then went on to win the Governor General's Cup and the Concorde at the Avondale Cup meeting a couple of weeks later.  Brutus won a Marlboro Mile(now the Thornton) but not sure if he had run on the Coast in his lead up that year.  John Carran had a horse called Meadowlands which won at Reefton then at Trentham in lower grades(I think Morty trained it???).

But for you lot's benefit suggesting I  head to Trentham I will copy Nick Williams quote when asked if the family were taking their horses to Royal Randwick 'we don't bother with the provincials'

Note to self.  Do your research first.  Brutus didn't win a Thornton and it was never called the Marlboro Mile.  Thought he did but I am badly wrong there.  Might have run second in the equivalent maybe

The Thorndon mile has had a lot of names over the years, as has their other mile the Captain Cook, which used to be the big race at the March meeting. I think the Thorndon was previously the George Adams. The southerners have won both miles a few times.

The Dennis Bros got the March one with either The Twinkle or The Dimple and Pitman got the January one with Just Tommy from memory.

Also couldn't forget Johnny alone winning the big sprint up there, think he was by blue vermillion, trained at timaru, and paid a big price

Was actually the Jarden mile, with the southern sprinter knight invader running the quinella.
