You of course Freda were the victim of some dodgy tactics in the 1000 Guineas a few years back(was it Michael Walker?).  Your filly was bloody lucky to stand up.  For someone who might have one good enough for a G1 fairly irregularly it must have been gutting.

Freda White - another of the characters that made NZ racing so great in the 50's 60's and 70's.  Especially in the jumping game but Crooks Hazlett Hillis Cochrane Winsloe Anderton Mavor.  And that's in the deep South alone(and I have no doubt left a heap out)

Yes, although I'm sure Michael didn't envisage the carnage that went on behind him.  The filly was injured, was no good afterwards, and neither was another filly who went over the top of her.

And, gutting though it certainly was for me, it was nothing compared to the hopes and dreams of her terminally ill owner, she was the last horse he bred and his last chance to have a star.

If it was M Walker, the double decker Karma bus arrived good and proper, funny how things get squared up, Bosson's turn will come as will Sam W, the standard of riding is so poor, the standard of policing is trying to reinvent itself, good luck with that, at least it's a start, all we need now is the 'teaching process',.

I've said it before ad nauseam however, we had it right back in the day when you couldn't have an apprentice unless, you were an A Trainer, had been a jokey yourself, or proved to a stewards panel you possessed the appropriate skills to have/teach an apprentice/s.........mostly they got it right, sadly administration is at such a level,... that has gone out the door, and chaos reigns.....sadly.

To be fair JB I am not trying to criticize Jockeys(when it comes down to it I always say I would be flat riding one around the birdcage so who am I to judge?).  But Bosson and Walker(I'm not 100% sure it was him).  Two top liners who caused grief on big days.  Oxford Aunt(Pam's horse) actually fell when I look at the records.  Due to a horse looping the field to lead then dramatically slowing the pace.

I've had it happen to horse I had a share in - Vinnie Colgan carved it up in a G1 and how it stayed on its feet...  But because his horse had come from behind it it wasn't even worth a protest.  Would only have got second anyway because we ended up third.

Yes and I understand that Reefton, I'm more generalising, these guys are meant to be mentors, blokes and gals that the kids look up to, when your role model does what Bosson and Sam W did, and back then Vinnie and M Walker what chance does the up and coming kid have.

I knocked MRC down at Wanganui, we had two in the race, I copped a suspension, MRC and Deac gave me hell, not for days, but for weeks, I took it on board, there was NOT the level of carelessness and recklessness then like there is now, can you tell me why? I bet Freda can, and I bet you can........you don't have to be able to ride around the birdcage to comment, you've seen enough in your lifetime.....

Sadly indeed...the results of the change in processes we see daily.

The old system was seen to be outdated and unprofessional.  It goes without saying, of course, that not every former jockey-turned-trainer has the skills to teach.  But by and large, it worked ok.

The Racecourse Detectives had the welfare of the apprentices as part of their job description, and again, although not perfect, at least someone was looking out for the kids' wrt wages, conditions, and accommodation.  Now, I don't think anyone takes much notice unless a particular apprentice is strong-willed enough to make him/herself heard, or has a good support network.

No one likes to see any horses or riders harmed due to the actions of the jockeys, but in a competitive game it's going to happen in some form, and I'm sure not on purpose. Certainly never got to see the best of oxford aunt, or her I'll fated son of zac, very promising horse.

Inevitable that if you ride long and hard enough an accident will happen.  However not particularly nice to wish ill luck on anyone.

No I don't wish ill luck, God forbid, a jocks life is tough enough if you're not a natural lightweight, you try and miss 2 meals a day, you never ever get used to it, but reckless riding doesn't go without it's consequences, eventually it catches up.....really it does.

Well there are going to be a helluva lot of jockeys going to experience bad karma according to your philosophy!

I really reckon the turning point was when they started calling Stipes by their first name.  Morty, Mouse and those guys might have not liked Muirhead but I know he was always addressed as Sir.  Ditto Samson the Racecourse D.

I mentioned it to Murray Humphries(ex Stipe, decent bloke and certainly not a frightening character) at Cromwell last year - he said at the end of his time there was only one jockey still calling him Mr Humphries.

Shame we didn't send some of the failed ratbag ex-cops that now work on our judiciary your way.

At least the two ex CEO's of NZTB have shot through, all thats left is Georgie Porgie to fly the coup and the decks are cleared, have the boffins that employed them been carpeted yet?

They'll employ some more Aussie's with glowing CV's no doubt.  Never underestimate the power of bullshit when it comes to a CV
