Ludwig
These are becoming even more shambolic. Why let the field go when one horse has its leg entangled with the tape? Why let the field go when horses are pointing the wrong way. Some of the efforts today at Hawera were dreadful. How can this be presented as a professional business when standing starts are worse than amateur. Not good enough.

Would bringing Peter Lamb out of retirement help solve the issue? 1
Honestjohn
It's the lazy trainers that are to blame, my trainers always taught the horses ringcraft. Some involved standing for long periods. Like the horses first trip away, teaching them stuff you only get with practice. Hj

Would some younger more energetic attendants help?

I totally agree with what your saying. Some blame must be put on the drivers also as they are trying so hard to get them away first thus causing false starts.france has the same issues with some starters at some outer tracks.ive seen 5+ false starts when everything looks good.there method of stand starts is this the fairest and best.look at France video I put up that's how they do it.

That p, s me off. Hj Me too Honestjohn. The mobile starts were brought in to ensure every horse got a fair start and there would be less breakers. But with the mobile going like hell at the start, drivers hanging back and giving a start to the others (unless the horse can't keep up of course) and no penalty to a driver for not being up to the arm or close second row this just shows that mobiles havn't improved the starts much at all. Sprint races with a wide draw you are out of it on most occasions, but with a stand a good beginner still has a chance.

I think if you have a look at the stipes reports these days, you will find that any driver who doesn't have their horse in position 50 metres prior to the start is either fined or given a warning. The only exceptions seem to be if the horse is being urged along and it is considered the horses fault. If on the rare occasions its the mobile driver going a bit fast ,that gets a mention. 1
