Yes I see they have been watching some of the New Zealand behaviour lol, and trying to put the 'Bite' on the opposition, when unable to get past them lol.

Com'on Chief . for a bit of famous moments trivia, See if you or your nz galloping mates here at BOAY,  can name the 'Bitee' ? and the 'Biter' ?in the photo in a Group 1 😁.

Little Brown Jug [ B Thompson ] vs Manikato

Orr Stakes I think.

I used to work for Peter Jones [ LBJ's trainer ]   I clipped the colt as a yearling.

Great try Chief !!! , the Big girl a fantastic Nz winner of the Melbourne Cup for Laurie Laxon .

and holding out Natski in the photo below,  .............just like Mankato was holding out My Brown Jug to win by a neck . and nearly getting a hickey for his trouble 😂. Freda on the money .

Empire Rose , A big Chestnut like the beautiful champ Manikato who was winning his 3rd CF Orr Stakes (run at Sandown that year)

i WAS impressed   by LBJ  when I first saw him at Avondale [stringhalt and all ]  and later by his fighting/biting

I sent 5 mares to him, only 2 got in foal --one foal won a group 2 yo race at Ellerslie, the other a Derby

His trip to Auckland resulted in a shocking decision  by the stipes to replace his regular rider

Yes, Tito Poblete.   Peter always felt that the stringhalt could have been the reason he wasn't so comfortable right-handed.

Those are great statistics nod.  Peter trained some good ones, he was a Frank Roberts protege I think.  The skills of those good old conditioners well lost.  The horses trained by those types of guys looked out of this world in terms of fitness and muscle definition, especially when they didn't have trials and raced much more sparingly.

In which race did Empire Rose try to bite her opponent?

She certainly was a colossal mare, was lucky to witness her nz cup win at riccarton, has stuck in my mind for sometime,  don't think she left anything in the broodmare barn, but stand to be corrected.

none I don't think. She looks pretty grumpy in the photo in this thread though 😄 at the finish of the Cup , like she wants to get stuck in to someone lol...... but it's more of a stallion thing to savage at the other horses mostly.

'So Si Bon' who is still racing here each week  used to Bite savagely at rivals,  on occasion and was eventually gelded Late-on. He ran 2nd on Saturday actually at Morphetville R5,  to a good little horse named after one of your posters in  'Foxy Freda'

I'm pretty sure she had a go at Natski earlier in the straight in that Cup.

I was there for that NZ Cup win.  Dad and I had traveled over from the West Coast for Cup week.  I was a teenager and got the Trifecta basically boxing two horses with the field.  If I recall correctly the rank outside came in for third and the Tri was about $1,200.

I was there as well, and despite all of us being much younger I imagine the average age of attendees on Cup Day back then was probably older than in recent times.

Sadly, she only ever left four foals despite 13 attempts.

Empire Rose was so big (long in stature) that she is one of the only ones ever raced to often have the barrier stall not fully closed behind her at the start of a race , because she didn't fit in properly lol....

I may having been living there st the time, but took my camera, and was down on the fence, got a nice photo of her, and her low head carriage, certainly one of the highlights for me, she was returning from the Melbourne cup so was a top effort, didn't she finish 3rd in that Melbourne cup, was many a year ago.

Yes but she was actually second to Kensei in the 1987 Cup eleven days before she won the NZ Cup.

Thats why I anchored her for first and the second horse was Prince Avila the second favourite.  I anchored him for second and took the field for third in the Trifecta.  The rank outsider finished third.

She only carried 52.5kg to win.  Having carried 50.0 kg in the MC.  She ran 3:20 which is a pretty good clip for two miles.

Kensei was a NZ Bred.

Love Kensei mate. ridden by Larry Olsen from Brisbane who was actually our next door neighbour when running the trotters. So we were on board in the Cup,  at about 20-1 as Larry stormed up the fence with Kensei. Can still remember the yelling and screaming of encouragement , and the dancing all round the living room by one and all even now, as he hit the line in 1st place  .  bloody champion lol 😄🏆💰🏇

Talking of times, I think soundaration may have run to 2.16 or so to win the nz cup, and remember media puzzle running a similar time in his Melbourne cup, these days I think been a struggle to go under the 3.20 mark, mind you not the stayers of old
