Stewards' Report - Wiremu Pinn

Racing Victoria (RV) Stewards have advised New Zealand apprentice jockey Wiremu Pinn that his metropolitan claim has been reduced from 3kg to 2kg prior to the commencement of tomorrow’s midweek metropolitan meeting at Ladbrokes Park.

Stewards today conducted an audit of Pinn’s New Zealand wins following receipt of contrasting information regarding those that are relevant to the calculation of his claim.

It has been determined on the information available that the number of New Zealand wins currently attributed to Pinn’s metropolitan claim is incorrect.

Initial enquiries from the Stewards indicate that a miscommunication between Racing Victoria and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing may be central to the matter.

Stewards will open a formal inquiry to determine the circumstances and consider the impact on any races in which Pinn has ridden in whilst in Victoria.

Stewards have tonight advised the stables that have engaged Pinn at Ladbrokes Park that they are permitted to make application tomorrow for a replacement rider or to scratch their horse should they not wish to retain Pinn’s services with a 2kg claim only.

here's the rides today. moments ago they were all still showing a 3kg claim on Sportsbet , but are just being changed to his 'New" 2kg claim systematically now as I look at it. Wiremu is still listed as riding all 7 horses at the moment.

Fellow apprentice riding today Carleen Hefel has been riding since 2018 with 178 odd career wins (near the same as Wiremu Pinn) and she claims 2kg still. But she has about 50 Metro class wins worth near $4 million in prizemoney.

Could be a case of Racing Victoria making NZTR the scapgoat.  How could you honestly compare metro wins in NZ with those in Victoria?

Don't think you can ??  Wiremu was much more likely to Win a Group race in NZ though . (than Carleen)

Wiremu is credited with a Group 1 Win actually. The Otaki WFA classic ,  but his total career earnings are a little over $4 million from 1300 rides . so perhaps he would get Group Race rides all over Nz ?

Carleen Hefel is near $8 million from 1750 career rides (178 wins) BUT that only contains one Group 3 race placing. The apprentices rarely get any Group race rides in Oz.

Absolutely, not often that NZTR aren't right on the money.

Actually, I don't know if we have a differential for country/provincial/metropolitan.    We might THINK we do,  but - I recall, when Wheels was pioneering the winter attack on Queensland,  one of his difficulties was to adequately classify his horses.  Then, there was a requirement that a country track was outside a distance of 100km from a GPO.

Obviously, NZ's geography is very different from the vast distances seen in Aus, it is quite possible to make a case for many a 'country' track here to be classed as 'metropolitan' for that reason.

Someone will correct me if necessary, I'm sure.  But the stupid 'tiered' system we pay lip service to is only tiered stakes.

Go you little champion .🏆.

A good ride too, very good judge of pace. I'm sure the hot fav thought he had him covered with about 350 to go.

When a country track like Otaki has Group and Listed races it must confuse an existing Australian system.

As you point out New Zealand is different, unique even.  I know there has to be some workable correlation so as to assess horses and riders but I will never understand why we don't embrace our uniqueness rather than try to conform with other countries.
