News in tonight's paper

$13 million dollar development of ex Hokitika racecourse for housing

All NZTR had to do was be patient - that Club would have folded and they would have got the lot.  It was plainly obvious and I told one B Saundry that.

So the industry misses out on another 50% as much as the Entain $25m deal and in exchange got the princely sum of $1 on the sale to the Westland District.

For all those who whinge about what the Westland RC did you should focus on the real cause of this issue - the way the WRC was treated by Petone and in particular the repeated comment 'the status quo is not an option'

They only needed to do one thing.......

The Messara report's greatest achievement to date.  His first recommendation should have been to get some people with a vague idea of what they were doing in charge

FFS!!!!!!

Yeah.

I have to wonder how long it will take the Entain crew to work out the same thing.

Knowing the site intimately I'm not sure I'd want to build there.

Housing NZ or whatever they call themselves is the partner with the WDC and like all government departments they will keep writing the cheques out for the taxpayer to pay.  You can do anything with enough money and hydraulic excavators.

Did you think the WDC was just going to sit there doing nothing with it?  You might be as silly as your mates at NZTR

Hello???

Only cost WDC $1.  Sometimes it's better to do nothing as opposed to spending ratepayers money on subsidised dumb projects.  Mmmmm bit like AWT'S.

The $13m will come with a lot of fish hooks.

At least the money is going back where it should. To the community that paid for and developed the land. I say very well done WRC.

I agree 100%.  Though giving it to a council means it will probably be pissed up against the wall just as badly as the NZ racing Industry blows dosh

I thought it was a great move on the WRC's part at the time.

But if Bernard and co had not been bulls at the gate they could have withdrawn the permit after the new Act was passed or waited until the inevitable club collapse then swooped in.

But they had to play the big man.......

Good that it's being utilized, just look at the old Victoria park sight, just an eyesore and has been for sometime.

Victoria Park is Maori lease(which is why the GTC gave it up).  The issue there is the owners who do not seem to care. Entirely different issue for a block of land that the WRC owned outright

Poverty Bay another good example though they got in earlier and kept the money which would have been more difficult for the WRC but when the shit hit the fan PB were prepared to move their meetings and race at HB albeit with a very healthy bank balance.

But then Hokitika has its own old boys mafia network.

Who?

The WRC 'old boys' are virtually all dead

And most of them were, in my experience, very decent people.  The likes of Jim Keenan a very very fine man(a Labour supporter and a greenie to boot but regardless a very fine man who would turn in his grave at the way events have unfolded)

I always remember him walking inside on the carpet in his gumboots having taken veges out of the garden.  I'm not so sure Mrs Keenan thought he was a very very fine man at the time.

The enthusiasm for racing by these sorts of people is lost.  I look at the calibre on committees today and in my opinion they lack intelligence, common sense and passion for racing, which is what clubs should all be about, NOT real estate and development.  Shame on the lot of you!!

Certainly will take plenty of hard fill for sure, shame about the course an club, been a few special memories for me in the early days, remember decoy lad winning a flat race there one day, and I thought sir avion may have won there two, our spice also a special win and it's only one, tailed off with around go, any spring to mind for you, be quite a few nice horses to grace the track.
