    • I have always been a fan, though he does have a big advantage over most in that he doesn't have to waste like so many.
    • Great piece and super advice.
    • Agree 100%.  Perhaps though the salaries of those making the decisions are tied to turnover not revenue or they don't care and allocate their own salaries.
    • Harness racing has been in decline for 35 years since the early 1990s. It's probably going to take another 25 years to either reach rock bottom or recover. There are multiple issues that require attention and I get the impression that the board and people at HRNZ have yet to learn how to 'walk and chew gum'. They seem to focus on one issue at a time and that will not be enough. The last two harness racing meetings I attended, admittingly a few years back now,  was enough to turn me off bothering to turn up ever again - one in Ashburton and the other Alexandra Park. However I do see a glimmer of hope that harness racing can be saved. That glimmer isn't from the TAB/Entain or HRNZ, rather it is a few clubs - Methven, BPTC, Central Otago. These clubs seem to have committed themselves to get people back on track. They have identified the different customer groups they serve and are getting to understand the 'experience' those customer groups are looking for. With growing participation we can hope that it will turn into more involvement including ownership and betting. In addition I watched a race from the Wingatui gallops a week or so ago and they had a 'students day'. Was great to see these young people there. Made me wonder why Forbury Park TC or Manawatu haven't tried to tap that market once or twice a year. Not a full solution but at least a starting place. Last time I was on Ashburton there was nearly no-one oncourse. No food trucks etc, the general public bar and tote area locked up. At least from what I saw of the King's Birthday meeting this year both on Trackside and social media those facilities were open and people using them, kids with hot dogs and ice creams. So maybe the lesson have been learned and things are turning around. It will take time. Harness racing, imo more than the other codes, survives on social and community participation. I believe every race meeting should have a connection to the local community to encourage that participation. It could be achieved through multiple community based organisations and groups. Even in Auckland there is a very large corporate and large business base maybe they could look to run a 'league' competition amongst them. Everyone likes competition within groups. Clubs need to be driving oncourse participation as hard as they can, we can't survive without it. That's not withstanding a whole lot of other issues that have been highlighted elsewhere on here that also need urgent attention (betting turnover/revenue, ownership, ratings etc). One last comment. I believe all board members at HRNZ should be assigned a stakeholder group to represent and whenever a decision is required it is their responsibility to consider how the decision might impact on that group. It might reduce the impact of unintended outcomes from good intentioned decisions.
    • Perhaps a few Jockeys in NZ should take notice of that advice. I've had the opportunity to see Willo, Parr and Shinn ride in NZ and observed all three walking the track and also listening to advice.
