    • What Kembla Grange Races Where Kembla Grange Racecourse – Princes Highway, Kembla Grange NSW 2526 When Thursday, January 16, 2025 First Race 1:10pm AEDT Visit Dabble Provincial racing returns to Kembla Grange Racecourse on Thursday afternoon, with a competitive eight-part program set for decision in the Illawarra region. The surface is rated a Soft 7 at the time of acceptances, and with more rainfall forecast in the lead-up, punters can expect that rating to worsen the closer we get to start time. The rail is in the true position, with racing scheduled to get underway at 1:10pm local time. Best Bet at Kembla Grange: Ride The River The Bjorn Baker-trained Ride The River returns following a 155-day spell and appears primed to strike in this Class 1 contest. The son of Headwater caught the eye in a recent barrier trail at Warwick Farm on January 3, closing on the heels of the ever-consistent Willaidow. Watch for Ashley Morgan to dictate terms from barrier four aboard this progressive type, and provided he can handle the testing conditions, Ride The River should justify the short price with Neds. Best Bet Race 2 – #2 Ride The River (4) 3yo Gelding | T: Bjorn Baker | J: Ashley Morgan (58kg) Bet with Neds Next Best at Kembla Grange: Mrs Maree Mrs Maree faded badly in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1000m) at Randwick on February 10, pulling up two out of five lame in the post-race vet report before being sent to the paddock. She looks to be returning in supreme order, pushed out to score impressively in a recent barrier trial at Warwick Farm on January 3, showing no signs of her previous injury despite the lengthy layoff. Zac Lloyd takes the reins from stall four, and with Mrs Maree likely to gain the ideal stalking position in the one-one, watch for Mrs Maree to be storming down the centre of the course. Next Best Race 1 – #5 Mrs Maree (4) 3yo Filly | T: Clarry Connors | J: Zac Lloyd (55.5kg) Bet with BlondeBet Best Value at Kembla Grange: Milly Molly Mandy Milly Molly Mandy represents terrific each-way value with horse racing bookmakers as she gets set to make her debut for the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou barn. The daughter of So You Think was held up with nowhere to go in a recent barrier trial at Rosehill on December 23, with the unraced three-year-old slowly building into her work at the end of 900m. The 1200m first-up could prove short of her best trip based on breeding; however, with Tyler Schiller set to gain the perfect run from gate three, Milly Molly Mandy should get every chance to make an impression on debut. • Odds Bookmakers News Field Past Winners Widden Stakes Group Three Betting Guide Date: Saturday, February 1, 2025 Location: Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – Sydney, New South Wales Prize Money: $250,000 Distance: 1100m The Widden Stakes, a Group 3 race for two-year-old fillies, is a highlight of the Australian Turf Club’s calendar, run over 1100m at Rosehill Gardens. Conducted under Set Weights and Penalties conditions, the Widden Stakes boasts a $250,000 prize pool as of 2025. First held in 1943 and won by Birthright, the Widden Stakes has evolved over time. While it occasionally allowed open-gender participation in its early years, it has been exclusively for fillies since 2007. Elevated to Group 3 status in 2014, The Widden Stakes horse race honours the renowned Widden Stud, one of Australia’s most famous thoroughbred nurseries. As a proving ground for future champions, the Widden Stakes has seen notable winners such as Denise’s Joy (1974), Triscay (1989), Overreach (2013), Mossfun (2014) and Lady of Camelot (2024) — the latter three going on to claim Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) victories. In 2024, Lady Of Camelot claimed the title, defeating Manaal and Wave Breaker. This win marked a record seventh Widden Stakes victory for legendary trainer Gai Waterhouse, now in partnership with Adrian Bott. 2025 Widden Stakes betting odds Betting odds for the 2025 Widden Stakes are currently unavailable. HorseBetting will update the Widden Stakes odds once released. How to bet on the Widden Stakes Every decent Australian horse racing bookmaker will have betting on the Widden Stakes available. Many of them will open an early market so you can wager on the race a week or so in advance. Unlike many of the bigger races, Widden Stakes acceptances are only done a few days before the race so you won’t find a market many weeks in advance. Aussie bookies offer all of the usual bet types on the race and you will have the option of using ‘boosted odds’ at some of them. This simply means you place your win bet and use the boosted odds option, which could send a $10 shot out to $15. This provides great value and is as good a reason as any to bet online. Tim Clark took the heavily backed favourite to the front and led every step of the way over the 1100m and careered away for a dominant victory. The daughter of Written Tycoon was able to turn the tables on Manaal ($7.00), with the Gimcrack Stakes winner unable to reel in the front runner. The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Wave Breaker ($11.00) ran on nicely to nab third place ahead of Extreme Diva ($26.00), but was clear that the top two runners were the ones to follow from this contest going forward. 2023: Learning To Fly produces dominant display Learning To Fly produced an empathic display of talent to win the Group 3 Widden Stakes for trainer Annabel Neasham. The filly by Justify was a late drifter in the market despite opening a short-priced favourite after barrier draws on Wednesday, and seemingly overcame that drift with a dominant win against the girls, stopping the clock at an impressive 1:03:30. A time which proved slightly quicker than the colts earlier in the day as Red Resistance stopped the clock at 1:03:60 respectively. It was Perfect Proposal for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott who stepped best to lead them up, while the eventual winner sat to her outside throughout the 1100m contest. Firming favourite Steel City got the perfect run on the leaders back from Jason Collett who simply couldn’t chase down the brave Learning To Fly who gave a strong kick to hold off all challengers under jockey Chad Schofield. 2022: Queen Of The Ball leads throughout After Best Of Bordeaux dominated his rivals in the Canonbury Stakes, Queen Of The Ball won in similar style in the two-year-old fillies race, the Group 3 Widden Stakes. The Richard & Michael Freedman-trained filly found the front from barrier 10 under Rachel King and it was all over bar the shouting. The filly by I Am Invincible finished second on debut, however she came through that run well, to put up a margin of 3.75 lengths, in a winning time of 1:03.53. 2021: Mallory enters Golden Slipper picture Gerald Ryan would defer to the training philosophies of the great Bart Cummings as he plots an autumn two-year-path for Widden Stakes winner Mallory. The Arrowfield Stud filly put herself in the frame for Golden Slipper discussions with a determined win in Saturday’s Group Three race, chasing down leader Total Babe to score with authority. Mallory ($4) defied a market drift to stamp her class at Rosehill, scoring by a length over Total Babe ($4) with Vianello ($3.80 fav) another half-length away. • Te Akau Racing continued to forge their flourishing partnership with Victorian Jockeys Premiership leader Blake Shinn at the Matamata trials on Tuesday morning, employing the top hoop across a number of the stable’s top prospects. New Zealand’s leading stable will engage Shinn to ride several of their string on race day over the coming weeks, and we spoke to Shinn about some of his standouts. “It’s been a productive morning,” Shinn spoke to TTR AusNZ after the trials. “(I) rode about five lots early in the morning, then 12 trials. I’m happy that I’ve come over and gotten a feel for the horses again.” Heavy hitters return in terrific form Among his rides were G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner Captured By Love (Written Tycoon), who breezed home by 2l to win her trial. The Te Akau team have indicated she is headed for the G1 Railway S. on Karaka Millions raceday later this month. Click here to view Captured By Love's trial replay “She’s terrific,” Shinn said. “She’s come through her Group 1 win nicely. She’s coming back in distance with Craig Williams (staying) aboard - I’m keeping the seat warm for him. She’s just a lovely filly, no fuss at all.” Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM swooped on the daughter of Moldova (Snitzel), a close relation to G3 Ming Dynasty H.-winning sire Addictive Nature, at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale two years ago and paid $525,000 to take her home from the Milburn Creek draft. Last year, Rosemont Stud, Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA), Moody Racing, and Spicer Thoroughbreds combined to pay $500,000 for her half-brother by Too Darn Hot (GB), now named Maldini. He also guided home Move To Strike (I Am Invincible), winner of last year’s G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce S. who underwent upper respiratory surgery in late September, following his failure to fire in the Listed Sir Colin Meads Trophy. The 3-year-old colt won his 1000-metre heat by 0.75l over Bourbon Empress (NZ) (Proisir). “I think he’s returned well off the back of his jump-out today,” Shinn said. “It’s my first time riding the horse, but he’s a magnificent looking colt by I Am Invincible. He gave me a great feel.” Move To Strike | Image courtesy of Trish Dunell Bred by Gerry Harvey and offered by Baramul Stud in the same sale as Captured By Love, Move To Strike was a $500,000 acquisition for Ellis. His dam No Evidence Needed (Shamardal {USA}) won the G2 Let’s Elope S. for John Thompson, and she delivered a filly by Dundeel (NZ) in the spring, before patronising Vinery Stud’s new addition, Hawaii Five Oh. Among Shinn’s other rides was Damask Rose (NZ) (Savabeel), who returned in fine form under Shinn’s guidance to finish 1l behind Babylon Berlin (All Too Hard). The winner of two from five starts, including at Te Rapa in December, Te Akau Racing have indicated that she will be aimed at the R. Listed Karaka Million 3YO. Shinn was on board when the filly ran second in the R. Listed Karaka Million 2YO. Click here to view Damask Rose's (NZ) trial replay Magnificent types among Te Akau juveniles Shinn partnered the promising Snitzel colt Return To Conquer, who was purchased out of Blue Gum Farm’s draft by Ellis at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $1.3 million. A winner on debut in November in the Listed Counties Challenge S. under Wiremu Pinn, the talented grandson of dual Group 2 winner Portillo (Red Ransom {USA}) is no doubt en route to the G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce S., following in Move To Strike’s footsteps. Return To Conquer | Image courtesy of Trish Dunell The 2-year-old stepped out in an open trial, beating the older horses by 0.25l, with the 5-year-old Mr Mojo Risin’ (Deep Field) finishing second. “He’s a magnificent type, he trialled in an open heat and he won quite nicely,” Shinn said. “He did everything right, he’s definitely improved.” The filly In Haste (Snitzel) was another that Shinn describes as impressive in her 1.25l win in her 800-metre juvenile heat. Bred by SF Bloodstock, the three-quarter sister to G1 Tattersall’s Tiara-winning Prompt Response (Beneteau) was purchased for $400,000 out of Newgate Farm’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale draft by Ladbrokes Racing Club and Newgate Bloodstock last year. She debuted a strong second in November behind Toretto (NZ) (Ardrossan). Click here to view In Haste's trial replay Shinn also guided Avantaggia (Wootton Bassett {GB}), the first foal of Te Akau’s nine-time Group 1 winner Avantage (Fastnet Rock) and the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale-topper last year at $2.3 million, through her first trial. Resolute Bloodstock paid $1.3 million for her half-sister by I Am Invincible last week at the Gold Coast. Click here to view Avantaggia's trial replay Avantaggia as a yearling | Image courtesy of Magic Millions He added that it was hard to gauge her performance off of her debut where she found the drying track tough, “we gave her a quiet trial. She was feeling the track a bit, so we let her poke around out the back.” Born To Be Royal (King’s Legacy) might have been beaten 1.25l by Angels Brew (Harry Angel {Ire}), but Shinn was very pleased with the performance. Ellis purchased the filly for $260,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale last year where Riversley Park presented her, having picked her up for $40,000 from Fairhill Farm at the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale the year before. Her dam Fatal Rendezvous (All American) is a two-time winner from the family of Not A Single Doubt. Click here to view Born To Be Royal's trial replay “She’s a really impressive type physically,” Shinn said. “She has got a big future.” A well-deserved boost to Kiwi racing Shinn is keen to be a part of the upward trajectory of New Zealand racing. The New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing's mid-2023 announcement of prizemoney increases across the board, offering an additional $20 million to kick in at the start of the 2024/25 season, has come into effect, to the benefit of all. The newly established $4.5 million NZB Kiwi slot race takes centre stage in March as the Southern Hemisphere’s richest 3-year-old race. “New Zealand racing is stronger than ever,” Shinn has always enjoyed racing across the Tasman and is appreciative of the opportunities sent his way by New Zealand trainers. Lance O'Sullivan and Andrew Scott gave him the ride on his first Kiwi Group 1 winner when he guided Summer Passage (Snitzel) to win the G1 Sistema S. in 2017. The prizemoney rise is a well-deserved injection. “The horses here can mix it anywhere in the world. “I can only see it (the racing) getting better, and it might incentivise owners to keep their horses in Australasia with the prizemoney becoming so good.” Shinn’s association with Te Akau Racing is not new, having ridden for them in Victoria and internationally, but their latest partnership brings the two forces closer still. “They've been great to me,” Shinn said. “They've been really supportive and, when they asked for me to come to the trials, I knew how important it was.” David Ellis was amongst the most active buyers at the recent Magic Millions sale, signing for 21 lots across the sale. He took home the Home Affairs half-brother to G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. winner Warm Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), out of three-time Group 1 winner Sea Siren (Fastnet Rock), for $650,000 as his top purchase. David Ellis | Image courtesy of Magic Millions “David (Ellis) is one of the best judges of horse flesh in the world,” Shinn said. “It's great to have his and Te Akau’s support. I'm really happy to be in their group.”
    • Meeting News Te Rapa Track Update | Thursday 15 January   Due to very dry weather in the past week, punishing winds and a mains water line burst the track is drier than might ordinarily be the case. There has been 16mm of irrigation applied in the last 24 hours and it is out to a Good4 this afternoon. Given the forecast of a fine, hot day tomorrow it is expected to be a Good3 for racing. The racing strip was vertidrained last Tuesday/Wednesday which will help in providing some cushion.
    • Only have to see forums to see lack of respect for Stipes , starters, clubs , Handicappers anyone at all trying to help run the show 🤣😉. The Galah being a fair bloke (and myself)  one of the few happy to see investigations happen (like Inca)  to keep them all on the straight and narrow .  Inca was difficult because it had massive Police involvement,  as race fixing is a criminal charge and very complicated. (It's not just a racing sanction) so they got all tangled up like a bad beginner from a stand lol. 😂 You only have to look at the general lack of respect for the Police in society. (and umpires and referees in a lot of different sport) and it's seeming almost part of human nature ?. ( To argue against authority)  and Penalties given against.  Some people get off light ?. What about Dunn's with the the DQ of 4  horses in 2017 for Caffiene. Got off VERY light with just a fine , then did what you said and 'Appealed' and even got the fines reduced !! 🙄😳. I say that's the error and just BS 😅 . There should be penalties given for offences and the perpetrators should Suck It Up 😂🤣.  I hate Prison Parole lol. Once sentenced = Do your Time 👍
