    • What a great job Southland are doing!  After 17 years it's still a party and a raging success.  What makes the southern shindig inferior to Riccarton's leg of the Grand Tour?  This club knows what it's customers want, and prepared to pay for.  They are engaging with the community, which is not what happens at Trentham or Ellerslie. When Ascot Park loses it's title of the only track in NZ to host all three codes I hope they can find a profitable use for the inside of the two remaining racing surfaces.  Does anyone have any ideas what the greyhound track area could be used for?  Velodrome, pony races, dog walking, athletics, retired greyhound sanctuary, something equestrian, pony livery/pony club/riding school, trackwork rider and apprentice school ???
    • Youd think they'd have an experienced person on the tapes, connections must be frustrated by what happened with the re run, I know I was, talking through my pocket, the 2s on offer tomorrow seen fairly skinny especially from the second row, wont be backing up at that price, the 41s the first day more my go.
    • the westport cup was a strange race. a  false start was decleared because the starters assistant failed to release the hand held tape fast enough the first time, causing the backmarkers to be slow away. the stipes report noted she was spoken to advisedly. Maybe something like, next time do it with your eyes open. The result of the restart was evangilist got annoyed and reared up. The horse had its chance to go away, simply had decided not to after the false start. at least they didn't have the vet holding the tape like they did a couple of years ago. I remember starting a thread that the vet  was too slow in releasing the tape and cost a backmaker some ground and wondered why a vet was holding the tape in the first place.  then in yesterdays westport cup,the eventual winner jumped what appeared to be some white paint markings on the track and lost ground. That seemed very odd,why were there two very obvious white markings on the track close to each other. How does that happen. strange. my skatjie was denied a chance to line up as there was another horse in its way.I've often wondered if they pay the connections the starting fee if they are late scratched.
    • think you're right Brodster. But they will scratch horses 'If denied a Fair start' by being struck by the Barrier strand in any manner. This does happen very rarely , and the stewards rightly can scratch a runner that suffers that interference.  so will be in the Steward report if that is the case.  I notice the trotters can stand very very wide on the track these days? some even face the outside rail at times as the start is initiated . we never used to do that as was always a risk of the tape tangling your horse if up too close.
    • I don’t know that. Be great if they already are.
