    • It was a good day's racing but if the crowd was, so "O for Awesome" why was there large empty seating in the two main stands? For a city of 1.5M, the crowd was 10k max, so it is still a poor crowd given all the effort that has gone into the day. Until ATR learns how to market to and attract a cross section of the community to the races, I can see it getting no better. ATR used to have a magnificent Cup Day, but it was screwed and now they are trying to re-invent the wheel. TAB are you involved with The ATR? If you are then good on you for looking to improve the industry.
    • Saturday marked the final day of under-tack previews for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and a colt by Gun Runner (hip 654) set the bar within the first six hips of the day with the sales co-fastest time, breezing an eighth in a swift :9 3/5. The grey or roan colt, consigned by Eddie Woods, agent, was a $200,000 Keeneland September grad for St. Clair Stables last year. He is the first foal out of Tynan, a winning daughter of Liam's Map who is a half to GSW/MGISP and Walmac stallion Pappacap (Gun Runner) and GSW Boppy O (Bolt d'Oro). The dam received a timely pedigree update when another half-brother, $650,000 FTSAUG buy Our Souper Hero (War Of Will), just missed by a half-length in a well-met debut at Gulfstream Park Friday. “He worked exceptionally well,” said Woods after the breeze. “We thought he'd go really good anyway, and he may [have] over achieved a little bit even. He's a stylish, good-looking horse. He's been very straightforward all winter. Very quiet, laid back horse and all class.” Woods acknowledged that the market for classy sons of Gun Runner would be hot anywhere the colt went. “We could've brought him anywhere,” he said. “March is a great sale–may as well have him here.”   Breezing early in the session seemed advantageous, though the weather was not nearly as much of a hindrance Saturday as it was Thursday. “Conditions were really good today,” Woods continued. “We had one little squall of rain come through in the third session which upped the wind a little bit but other than that, it's been quite good.” With OBS March giving buyers their first look at freshman sires, Woods's consignment also includes a son of Independence Hall (hip 404) who took advantage of more favorable conditions Friday to work in :9 4/5. He's also represented by a daughter of Yaupon (hip 315) who worked a quarter-mile in :21 Friday and a son of Maxfield (hip 669) who breezed the same distance Saturday in :21 2/5. “Among the freshman [in my consignment], it's Independence Hall. My Yaupon is quite nice but there seems plenty of nice ones around. I also think the Maxfields are going to be nice.” Behind the Gun Runner colt, a total of 14 runners worked their furlong in :9 4/5 including colts by the aforementioned Maxfield (hips 672 and 721) and Yaupon (716). A More Than Ready colt (hip 757) who is a full-brother to Eclipse champion turf female Rushing Fall, also matched the :9 4/5 time. A pair of fillies shared the fastest quarter-mile Saturday. A filly from the first crop of Charlatan (hip 601) out of GISP Sweet Shirley Mae worked in :20 2/5 along with a filly by Aurelius Maximus (hip 619). The March Sale will be held over the course of three sessions and kicks off Tuesday, Mar. 11, running through Thursday, Mar. 13. • Five weeks after landing her first graded victory in Tampa Bay Down's Endeavour Stakes (G3T), Saffron Moon asserted her affinity over the Oldsmar, Fla., turf course once more with another late-running score in the Hillsborough Stakes (G2T) March 8. View the full article
    • After running too good to lose when going down to a narrow defeat at the hands of John Hancock (Constitution) in the Sam F. Davis Stakes when last seen, OWEN ALMIGHTY (c, 3, Speightstown–Tempers Rising, by Bayern) was kicked straight into the lead from his rail draw in Saturday's GIII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby, controlled the pace through even sectional times and ran away from his half-dozen rivals in the final furlong to earn 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The third choice at 29-10 to the comebacking 'TDN Rising Star' Chancer McPatrick (McKinzie) and outposted 'Rising Star' Patch Adams (Into Mischief), the $360,000 Keeneland November weanling and $350,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling was in front soon after the start and made the running in advance of longshot Brodeur (Nyquist) as second favorite Patch Adams was again not the quickest away and was consigned to a three-wide run into the turn. Chancer McPatrick was in the perfect spot as the addition of blinkers had him handy to the pace in the box seat through the opening exchanges. By the first quarter in a moderate :23.84 and the half in a hasslefree :48.16, Owen Almighty put Brodeur away approaching the entrance to the straight, and Chancer McPatrick loomed the only danger if good enough. But instead, Owen Almighty kicked on nicely when asked and was never in danger as the chalk plugged on at one pace into second. Hill Road (Quality Road), making his first start for Chad Brown, rallied from the back of the field to be third, while Patch Adams was a lackluster fourth. The final time for the 8 1/2 furlongs on a fast strip was 1:42.30. According to published reports, Owen Almighty is targeting the GII Pat Day Mile and not the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May.   Saturday, Tampa Bay Downs LAMBHOLM SOUTH TAMPA BAY DERBY-GIII, $350,000, Tampa Bay Downs, 3-8, 3yo, 1 1/16m, 1:42.30, ft. 1–OWEN ALMIGHTY, 120, c, 3, by Speightstown       1st Dam: Tempers Rising (GSP, $311,482), by Bayern       2nd Dam: Marchmont, by Mountain Cat       3rd Dam: March On He Said, by Stop the Music 1ST GRADED STAKES WIN. • Add another top 3-year-old filly to the tally for Darley stallion Medaglia d'Oro, who has some good ones on the GI Kentucky Oaks trail this year in Good Cheer and Ballerina d'Oro. They excel on the dirt, but daughter Nitrogen (f, 3, Medaglia d'Oro-Tiffany Case, by Uncle Mo), winner of Saturday's 42nd running of the GIII Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs, is one for the grass. Restrained in a tracking spot throughout the :23.15 and :47.15 early fractions, the D. J. Stable LLC homebred was let loose in the stretch. It took her some time to unfurl her giant stride, but when she did, she chased down pacesetter Lush Lips (GB) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}), collaring her late despite drifting, to win by about a half-length. Nitrogen covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.42. Deloraine (Candy Ride {Arg}) was third, while Opulent Restraint (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) finished fourth. Third in last fall's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, as well as in the GI Natalma Stakes, Nitrogen won her sophomore debut in January's Ginger Brew Stakes at Gulfstream Park. O/B-D. J.
