It was around this time that most of 'our' better 3yr olds were still running in our black type races, then, slowly slowly the better ones started to be targeted by Overseas $$$. The Bayer then for a few years was a race when the top fillies often tried to beat the boys, often involving lots of press leading up to! If the truth be known! the Levin track might have been the smallest ever to run G1 races.. I recall a rider who won the race twice recon one she stole with a front running ride!

Talking Otaki, as the Bayer gained in ratings, it then mobilized (sir) Arthur Williams to start spending the $$$ to get Terrace Regency up and running with the goal of G1...

Talking mid-80's, that race day then had Massive local support! The track would be just about full before the 1st race! The really were a serious progressive club back then, getting that sort of race was very impressive! I have just had a quick look through me collection and for those 80's meetings I was working for Ken Lush, it was Photopress back then, so don't have many, I do have plenty from the early 90's... back to those 80's meetings, I use to take the turn for home photos then for Flash, so had to walk up the straight for each race!!! Rather amusingly, I would get followed up and down by a tribe of you Māori kids! Always asking 'give us the winner of this race', I had a top strike rate for that sort of thing! Ove the years I got to know a few of them! one was a very cheeky young fella who went on to be a pretty good rugby player! Calos Spencer. Comparing LRC to Ellerslie back then is a tad hard! On course back then, then were always solid crowds for any big Raceday! Personally, back then, I always prefered Wgtn Cup Week 1st, Chch 2nd... not even sure I would have ARC cup week 3rd.. defiantly not now a days.. Reflecting back to those times as a punter! While the fields were as a rule much bigger and hence the complexities that come from that, there was no where the amount of other punting distractions as in today! I'm sure I would have 15/20 hours studying every meeting!

gambling should be taught to all kids! I have always been happy to do that within my extended family! its been interesting to see how quickly 'sports' have spread a gambling vernacular in daily coverage!

I have to admit a soft spot for that club! when I first started to drive the camera on course, early 80;s, this Club was batting on the front foot! Bayer Classic Day, Brilliant to be oncourse! 81-91 Some top winners.. Bonecrusher and J Cassidy (over from NSW). A great result was had when M Lyndon so out rode them to win on The Bishop! I am slightly surprise how there hasn't seemed to be much mentioning around the Cost of Living Crisis that so many are going through! the actual available disposable income has so shrunk for the bottom 60%, talking over the last 40 years! This decline is never mention much in racing discussions, not par for the course! (Tempted to mention @Huey Mafia mates! or certain peoples who have made Large donations to...) Talking about betting and encouraging younger punters to get involved with racing! To 98% I would (and Do!) suggest stay away, other than nickel and dimes amusing bets! Spend what you would on cleaning your car a month! Reason being the Take out rates are vulgar! Way to much NOISE/Propaganda, way to much to learn... Sports, lots of noise, but if you find a sport that you have some genuine insight into, then there is real potential there for grinding out a Profit! For me it use to be NZ Rugby, but now 100% Baseball. But gee, to make a profit! I have found I have had to be Very Cunning! and to milk a couple of great results via Bonus bets! lol! After the last big win via that I have Not received even one bonus offer! If one was actually trying to make a living then that has just got so much more difficult now that a monopoly has been locked in.

Actually, 'nowadays' most live in urban areas! Myself, the entry was the 'local clubs', Addington and Riccarton. Back then, early 70's, lots of crowds and excitement was to be had almost weekly! Of course another big difference back then was that the working class man had a spare $ in their back pockets. What with this current 'cost of living crisis' I'm surprised that many punting numbers would be up?

Mmmmm that's interesting some online critics suggested the scavenging would be the other way i.e. racing to sports. My simple read, so knowing that the old days of instant accurate betting is no longer available, that as 'us oldie$' in the racing betting pools decline, retire, pass on... that some younger punters might show some interest, but the simple reality of how hard it is to bet a winner in racing, on the surface its way easier with Sports betting...
