Dalgety Warns Punters - Brodie hold all bets!

Trainer Cran Dalgety is worried about a host of tricky starting points for his team at Addington tonight.

So he warns punters even though most of those he and wife Chrissie take to headquarters tonight are good enough to win they should be treated with caution.

“We have copped a lot of bad draws and even have Casino Action (R4, No.11) having his first standing start, so we could have a few starting issues tonight,” says the in-form trainer.

Team Dalgety begin their night with two of their more promising pacers on Ohoka Le Bron and Franco Sinatra in a strong R54-70 in which they are drawn the outside two marbles on the front line.

“They are both really smart horse who we like a lot,” confirms Dalgety.

“But they both obviously have bigger targets ahead so I think they won’t be rushing forward early.

“That doesn’t mean they can’t win but it makes it harder.

“Ohoka Le Bron is being aimed at a support race on Cup Day when some of his owners will be in town.

“And Franco Sinatra is a really good stayer with a good horse’s record but he is drawn even wider so he will also go back and be better for the outing.”

That would appear to give the well-drawn favourite Sinbad his chance to take a handy spot and be the one to beat after he got back and wide in the red-hot Flying Stakes last week.

Casino Action has been racing some smart young horses lately but steps into handicap grade against horses he can beat if he behaves. But that is a big if.

“It took him three trials to get his standing start ticket and he is still very much learning it. And he has barrier 1 on the 10m so he is a risk.

“But if we get him going from a stand he has a whole range of new options like some of the coutry cup races so we have to start somwhere.”

Defy Me (R8, No.10) is a handy three-year-old who also faces a barrier concern but one Dalgety hopes turns into an advantage.

“He is drawn 1 on the second line and if I thought he was going to get the right run I’d give him a great chance.

“The horse he follows out led early and rolled last start so the draw could work out ok.”

The stable will debut Carving Up (R11, No.6) tonight and Dalgety thinks he is in the right race but still with plenty of improvement in him.

The start will also be crucial in two of tonight’s biggest races, with the main handicap pace bringing together Cup contenders like Smiffy’s Terror against a highly-promising southern pacer in Street Art.

The latter looks very a cracker for trainer Craig Ferguson and has won from a start will show punters whether he can take the next step tonight.

The two-year-old trotters clash in Race 7 minus last week’s stunning winner Paramount Kiwi and manners will be the key after horses like Look

To Da Stars and Bounce N Beyond cost themselves galloping in the Harness Million last Friday.

An interesting newcomer is A Fine Patrick, the first son of wonderful mare Harriet Of Mot, with John Dunn opting to drive him rather than Bounce N Beyond.

A Fine Patrick has had five trials including three this prep and opened the $2.50 favourite in a juvenile trot race with some real depth.

J Dunn jumping off his own horse in Race 7 to drive A Fine Patrick. Is that a good push for that runner? Bookies had it short early.

I backed just the one tonight. Jahi race 11. the equal 2nd favorite..I thought he had the perfect draw.I have noticed,in my opinion, all the dunn team have been running about 3 lengths below what they had 3 weeks ago and thought the $2 favorite they had in that race would underperform.

Unfortunately as to  my pick, well i just can't work out that drive.

Bob butt tried hard but couldn't quite make the trail, but still ended up in the perfect 1/1 sit following the other equal 2nd favorite. To my amazement he gave up that position and switched to 3 back the fence after 700m.. In that move it appeared he virtually gave up any chance he had, with the race unfolding as expected from there with him not getting a clear runfrom the position he elected to place it.

The horse who was following him originally took his position in the 1/1 and got the perfect run,as you could see would happen, and won.

I know i'm talking through my pocket, but what was going on with that drive?

Dunn stable going pretty average by their standard recently. Like most top stables, always go better when the money is up.
Purdon stable hardly on fire either…

i think the dunn stable has dropped off in performance just in the last 3 weeks.

Since the 8th of october,in the south island they have had 37 starters.

Of those 37 starters, 5 were favorites,4 second favorites and 4 third favorites.

They have ran 2 seconds and 2 thirds from those 37 starters.

Their current yearly udr is .2566,so the latest 2 weeks results clearly indicate a drop off in form. Personally i think its been  noticeable.

All stables have there runs, its just this one seems to have seen a slight drop off in most of their teams performances,in my opinion.

Prior to that they had been going great, which is the norm for them mostly.

Some may say, thats being a bit negative,i don't think so myself,i'm just quoting the stats to make the point i made earlier.

One thing about the dunns is they are known for their consistency and because of that are good to follow.

One stable i have trouble following is the R Todd stable. Its like about 3 weeks ago,in just a few days he took 9 horses to the races. Only one managed to not run last,or 2nd last if he had 2 in the same race. When the Todd trained horses run well, they run very well, but its hard guessing just when that will be sometimes.

Well done, Dunns recent run poor. Looks like it is continuing today

Wow, have the Dunn stable had a winner since? What’s happening?
Although John did drive a roughie for another trainer to win. They will be looking to improve for cup week

John dunn driving well,so thats not the issue.

Its just the whole team, even today still about 3 lengths behind what they were just over a month ago. Those in the north island going similar.

The punters are still backing them though. The race just run,Aardiebythehill the favorite. Punters who had not noted the stables recent form would have been expecting him to win with the run he got.I thought it was surprising the whale still tipped him to win.

Having said all that, they must get a win shortly as they have so many nice horses in all the grades.

Yes, agree he is giving the horses a chance. I am just surprised how the team are going, well down on what the stable usually win

well the dunn stable back winning. It had to happen.Well done to them.

To be fair magic four, sunnies sister and dalton shard and the quinella hadron collider and mikis courage all looked like they should have won easy, even on recent form. They all good horses and had well placed tonight.Magic four handicapped to win and finally driven to race on speed.

Surprising dalton shard paid so much. I always think k newman is a driver that given the chance of driving a horse that looks a winner on form,he will got the job done. Personally i think hes a bit under rated by some.

Just on recent form, the only one that surprised me a little was who's delight. i had thought francom indie a bit of a stand out in that one,but who's delight used the draw and driven the same way he had when winning previously,so returned to the form of 3 or 4 starts ago.

They ended their long losing streak with a bang, thats for sure.

Yeah, funny how all of a sudden they have a heap runners. A bit like purdons, once money up things change, puts you off as a punter

i think yes they did improve the 3 lengths that they seemed to lack for a month or so,but i also think the likes of sunndees sister, dalton shard, hadron collider and magic four(through a handicap let up),were all dropping in grade.

I think that was the main component which saw them winning.

The temporary slump in form i believe was real. You just had to compare previous performances. Not all the team, just most.

But why that was is somewhat unknown,so given it was only a slight drop off,we can only guess what the reason was.

They are a stable that come the big days,i personally don't put in the small category of trainers who have real major changes in form. Those that do are the ones i wonder more about.

lol... Hi... 'My name is Jeff' (back running 1.50 last night)  . But we BetterZippit about 'Betterzippit' picking up 1/2 million in one race in the hard to win west Australia and not winning since, and also winning the last 2 prestigious Interdominion Pacing finals (with 2 old boys that never won a race a since either and have been 'moved on'  ) and might be trying to get a plodder to 'Sway ' past the very best in NZ in 'Akuta' next week . Wonder if he can do it.?

nearly 'Majesticly Cruised' in last year's Nz Cup,  but 'Copy That' held on.  Be prepared NZ lol.

  • 4 weeks later...

Seems the Dunn stable is still struggling a bit as you blokes noticed through this thread.

still nothing in first place over the Timaru and Banks Peninsula meetings.

However Carter Dalgety is driving super well , as am just watching the replays from yesterday he had 2 drives for 2 Wins and has Excellent 'Style' he has, as he drives them to the line .

was a bit like the Dexter or Cam Hart 'style' and it paid off as both horses responded well for him and took the wins . HARRISON in race 6 and BETTERWITHBLING in race 8.

Don't think either horse would of won without the 'Carter' great hands , and Brodster definitely Put us on to a good one there (giving Carter a plug a few times) .

What they Should of done is popped on the Plane to Brisbane with KRUG and REPUBLICAN PARTY and get some wins up and Carter's career and confidence rolling along like Cam Hart's. Can't win the Interdominion sitting in your box/ stall at home. darn Grimson has won the last 2 Interdom grand finals with 'battlers'  and it's worth a Million dollars this year. those 2 horses would clean up the locals. well maybe not beating LEAP TO FAME . but there's other heats. such a shame they didn't come. (Krug has done well here before)
