Following Race 3 - Stewards requested a ruling from the Adjudicative Committee acting under Rule 211(1)(b) for the removal of assistant judge Mr Olson following information that investments had been placed on track. After hearing from Stewards and Mr Olson the Adjudicative Committee removed the assistant judge for the duration of the day and ordered the appointment of a replacement. Stewards opened and adjourned an information into this matter.

Thought this rule been around with anyone in an official position with in racing, some may say it's a draconian one, but rules are rules, do you know the person involved, I think he's from over the coast, be interesting to see what penalty will be served.

Yes the rules are the rules however isn't the rule a bit obsolete?  I understand how it would be a problem in the pre-technology days but how could an Assistant Judge influence the result in their favour today?

Brings back a memory from about 50+ years ago.  The local Hokitika TAB agent was also the Westland Racing Club Judge.  He called a horse in first which was clearly fourth even on the photo.  Not even sure he got fined let alone suspended!

The cheeky sod had the photo finish framed and put on his wall at home.  He was the father of a mate of mine and when I went to the funeral and we were talking into the early boozed hours that photo came up.  My mate could never work out why that picture was on the wall until I explained why.

Was wondering why you would be needing an assistant judge?

Is it really that taxing that it needs at least two people to decide placings?

Surely in this day and age with the photo finish, it is very easy to judge the placings?

Wonder how much the assistant judge actually wagered? Lol

Probably needed 2 judges for many years Brodster. I think they actually 'developed' Film for quite some decades after the finish of a race. We're blessed with digital for sure these days.

Have a look at this South Island race finish !!! hahahaha take 4 judges to sort it out.😆

Robert Dunn probably should of won it . Buried deep on fence with the fav 'Derby Double'.  Hard on the back of winner (the leader on the fence) and travelling under a stranglehold still.

Had to hold the whip in his teeth late on to grab hold lol.....  kiwi ingenuity again ?? 😂

I was there that day Gammalite.

A screamer of a finish. Ironically, my bet Spry High shit it's self and ran motherless.

I went for the Two Mile Geraldine Cup at Orari and punted Master Regal in the Cup who won for Mike DeFilippi.  Was November 1978.

Thought you would of been on your old mate 'Cecil ' in it Walt ??. you can just see him sitting down low in the cart as he always did, in his famous black with white stars ( he is seen just below the white neck strap of Derby Double). running 3rd in the photo as it panned out 😂

Did he ever tell you (or did i ?) the reason he left Tasmania for Nz as a youngster before all those Nz Cup Wins he got with False Step and that ?

Whenever I look up results from late 70s or 80s, most of the time the Divs are not available on HRNZ? How did you find these, ta

Haha...I bet Sunseeker several times via heart over head and learned my lesson. Even now when a stable I support has a runner I generally have a saver on the stable runner just to avoid having egg on my face.

As to why Ces moved to NZ. Memory is hazy but his brother raced a few horses and bought them over to NZ to race and Ces bought them over. I may stand corrected on that?

Who trained the winner True Peterson?

Was it Clarrie Rhodes, from memory?

He did Brodie. A few years earlier he had a much better performed horse named Alec Peterson. Many of his horses were out of a mare with Peterson in the name. Must be a family connection there. Most were sired by True Averil who Clarrie also trained to win the NZ Cup in the early 70's beating Robalan and co.

I've copped the same along the way but they usually have the tote prices up more often than not at my end.

Clarrie I think had a freelegged pacer, think it was called Free Bet and was pretty fast!

Wouldve been faster if it had a lighter driver than Eddie Cowie! 😂

I remember the handy mare I think you're referring to Brodie. Frees Best?

Pretty sure the trotter Bossy Boy also went to Eddie

Clarrie raced the good trotter Best Bet in the 70's that must have run second to Bevan Heron's superb Nigel Craig more than most.

Eddie was a big boy Brodie. Still managed to get the good trotter Kahuna Pele home a dozen or so times.

There is a driver going around in Victoria that looks to be similar "shape" to Eddie. Can't remember his name.

Always wondered how the horses would go if they was towing Rick May around instead of Demis Roussos :)

You are correct Blackie.

I was just hoping the TAB would suggest that I could have a free bet, although I know that isn’t happening

Clarrie's favourite horse that he owned was named LOOKAWAY . won the NZ Cup by several lengths when trained and driven by Maurice Holmes. beat False Step and Caduceus on several occasions .

Clarrie Rhodes very instrumental in organising the first major air flights and sending horses back and forth from America for Feature racing and breeding . (including helping False Step and Caduceus to achieve that in the first days of long haul horse flights.)

Clarrie owned Rhodes Rental Cars, way back when, which wouldve been one of the largest fleets, I would say?
