Two more meeting's Abandoned in July 2024. Rotorua and New Plymouth.

Recommended Posts

No gallops races anywhere in NZ for 7 days due to abandonments.  Has anyone considered the cost to owners?  Who knows how many more week's training fees will need to be paid before each horse gets back into a field??!!

Pukekohe should have been rescheduled to Friday, and Hastings to Monday.  Notice it is all the "flash" tracks that have had to abandon.  Look at how the unwanted tracks such as Avondale, Foxton and Levin are handling large amounts of horses in a trialling capacity.  It's not rocket science.

Although a training, trialling and minor race filler AWT's are obviously not the answer.

One wonders when those in charge will look in the mirror and make an honest appraisal.

There will be more crude descriptions of our head honchos than Gai's "Mindless Marshmallows" referring to the Aussie equivalents.

After an inspection of the track this morning by the RIB and Club representatives the meeting at New Plymouth today has been abandoned. There has been 19mm of rain overnight resulting in a water-logged track with further rain predicted.

MEETING NEWS

Rotorua Abandoned Today

Due to surface water on the track in areas past the winning post, and after sustained periods of rain, the meeting at Rotorua today has been abandoned. There has been 31mm of rain in the last 24 hours on a Heavy10 track. NZTR will work with the Club and Entain NZ to see what options are available next week.

MIA Sharrock - the rain was forecast.  Why don't you and Entain formulate a plan B before plan A fails?

The parameters are quite simple aren't they.  Can we get the starting gates to another venue that has a better surface, will there be a broadcast van available and what is the forecast!

I also suggest that you throw away the sausage rolls now.  4 x thaw and freeze makes the pastry fall off.

I wondered that.  A mate attended their February meeting and they had more rain then in torrential downpours up to an hour before scratching time and then during the day.

It was Taranaki Cup day though.

I wonder if the big 'O' was at Taranaki?

Yes but those tracks are part of the Messara ( @TAB For Ever ) undesirables.  The plan is to sell them and make the chosen elite better.  Well the plan arent working is it!

Anyone seen or heard from MIA Sharrock?

This must be a record @TAB For Ever - no thoroughbred race meetings in NZ for 7 days!  Ironically the last flat meeting was at Ruakaka.  A track that has had dates taken off it.  No thought to move the Auckland Racing at Pukekohe to Ruakaka...nope we'll roll the dice again and see what it is like on Sunday!

This was their Plan B for today:

MEETING NEWS

Racing at Taranaki/Rotorua Saturday

Currently both tracks sit in the Heavy10 range and have experienced minimal rain in the last 24 hours with both venues in good order as of today’s inspection. Rainfall, actual and forecast, will continue to be monitored.

The tracks will be inspected again around 6am by track managers and the RIB. Any information will be communicated by NZTR by 6.45am at the latest.

Exactly. Have they not learnt to have a back-up plan after the plethora of abandonments we have had recently. Its winter - it rains. This is hurting owners and all the others who don't earn if there is no meeting.  Any response from anyone at the aptly named Dick Street?

A Club must arrange for a track gallop on the course on the morning of the race meeting to reconfirm
the declared track rating, unless this is not practical

Why would a club bother if the rider's opinion is going to be ignored or over-ruled?

There is something not right about this descision.  Again I refer back to the February meeting which went ahead in similar circumstances.  Arguably worse given I think there was 15mm of rain in less than two hours just before track inspection.  Who were the allocated Stewards today?

There is a plan B and a policy for that but they've perhaps worked out that it's flawed because most winter gallopers won't want to race on the poly.

1. If a turf racetrack is determined by NZTR or a Stipendiary Steward to be unsuitable or unsafe, or is otherwise
unavailable, for racing, NZTR may decide to transfer a racemeeting from that racetrack to a synthetic
racetrack if, in its opinion, there are no other suitable turf racetracks in the relevant region to hold the
racemeeting or it is not otherwise appropriate in the circumstances to transfer the meeting to a turf track

MEETING NEWS

Rescheduled - Taranaki/Rotorua/Trials

Tuesday 23 July

Taranaki will now race at Hawera due to a prior booking at the New Plymouth Racecourse. Fields and stakes will remain the same with the exception that the two 1800m races will now be over 1900m. All scratchings will be re-instated. There will be new race times provided by Entain for this meeting. It is important for this meeting to takes place no later than Tuesday given there are horses planning to go to The Winter Cup meeting at Riccarton Park 11 days later.

The trials scheduled for Cambridge will remain on Tuesday. While this is not ideal given the Taranaki races there will be riders available that were scheduled to ride at Rotorua on Saturday 20 July.

Wednesday 24 July

WTR@Cambridge Races as per programme.

Thursday 25 July

A new meeting has been scheduled for Rotorua. The programme will remain the same as that for the abandoned meeting however new entries will be required. 19mm of rain in last 24hrs…..😆😆😆😆

So what?  It is winter time.  I doubt 19mm would make the track unsafe.

The jockey who tested the Taranaki track has enough experience to make a call on safety.  Don't put rules in that NZTR have no intentions following.

I have spoken to reliable people at both Hastings and Taranaki who think the tracks could have been raced on.  Protocols are no good if they are not followed.

What a joke, Taranaki moves to Hawera, ANOTHER TRACK NOT REQUIRED.  Didn't Opunake move from Hawera for the better track in New Plymouth?
