Sure thing Shad, but at some stage in everything in life you need to know when to let go. some of these codgers hang on because they say NO one is coming through the ranks, often its because these dinosaurs make it bloody nigh impossible for anyone else.

You know the types, they think they know better, it worked in the 80's, etc etc.

It's called a democracy Barryb.  I am not aware of any Clubs were it is not one man one vote.  Unlike NZTR and NZRB where it is some bizarre method that selects nobodies to run the outfits.

Oddly enough it did work in the 80's.  Arguably the overpaid "experts" have stuffed it.  That and the black hole of the Waikato that seems to suck the energy from the region's.

Pretty much worked in the 90s too. We were at least paying our own way more or less. I thought the writing was on the wall in 2001 when the Racing Act was still a bill. So it has pretty much proved. I must say, as an old codger about to retire from the day job in a few months, I have spent quite a bit of time in the last 2 or 3 years replacing myself on various boards and committees including in racing. I've worked hard to do that, recruiting younger more energetic people and once done, stepped aside. In all cases they are still there. I still occasionally support those boards and committees but don't influence their decision making. It's a bit of work recruiting the right people for organisations that I treasure and want the best for but it's been worth the effort.

Yes, it did.

I bought into the notion being bandied around that 'we' needed slick,  professional,  up-to-date management and forward-thinking business types....naive of me,  again....because it has been largely downhill all the way since.

I'm not implying those pre-ninety officials were perfect,  but certainly their replacements are much less so.

..and on the Waikouaiti topic...I gather Kurow yesterday was a great day - as usual - with heaps of racegoers enjoying a day at a good track at a very picturesque spot which the M report wants to see gone...and at which,  by the way, were several Canterbury racing people also enjoying a lovely day.

The same lot who advised that Waikouaiti was the track to keep.

Was it the Breeders initiative that forced the NZ Derby from Boxing Day?

As I recall the Boxing Day Derby winner often went on to greater and bigger things.

Always a big crowd oncourse and a bigger crowd watching on TV1.

...sigh...and remember when we had a Wellington Derby as well,  and a St Leger that really was a classic to strive for....until the 'commercial' reality of a staying colt made that unattractive..

But isn't that another result of Big Breeders "initiative", crap programming, tiered stakes and a stuffed up handicapping system?  The latter also a big breeder initiative.

There is little doubt that Messara didn't make his recommendations on his own research - on this and other tracks - which fact disappoints me greatly.  I did have great hopes [ naively,  obviously ] for his report.

Advice on this particular travesty came from very close at hand.....the local administration - who felt that ' sitting on the hill overlooking the races '  was a valid reason for retaining a shithole of a track that attracts little patronage generally apart from one stable.

46 runners.

Great crowd hot weather kids enjoyed their day out. But amateur people on course at least twice overspoke commentator once after the gates opened  something about fashions in the field ?

Not a very good viewing track unsure why the would retain this track

I see today in aus....they showed races from Burrumbeet? I had to google it, 15 mins west of Ballarat.

Only race once a year, reminded me of Kumara, only track was far better.

Interesting that it was the first time all races were shown live on aussie race channel?
