Wasn't concerned about the track at all.

Maybe so, but you stated you were surprised that meeting was still on, and conditions not good. Surely it’s like any workplace, if you’re putting yourself, staff & jockeys in a non ideal situation…. you should have done something about it and scratched them.

We lived in Warrington St for many years, until I left home and moved about a bit, don’t miss Opawa

Hasting St for us, early 60's was a free time for feral kids like us in that area!  cheap to play local sports! rather 'knew' I Had to leave in mid 70's, the start of a rather big adventure! still on one 50 + years later!! hate to think how many race meetings I have been to! how many races that i have watched!!! :)

You forgot to mention how much money that you lost.

The beauty about gambled money lost! is it's gone...  move on! and of course! Never bet the rent money!  I be a big follower of MLB, 162 games a season, it does teach one to accept a  L,  then move on!  Nice to know I don't owe a cent and be living in a very good paddock,I  hope your losses have not done to much harm! Good to know that any L'$ I have had along the way  have never affected others! :)

Pondering my historical W/L re my gambling on Racing??? Millions turned over!  lost for about first 15 I reckon.. got lucky,  and got to go/work 75+ meetings a year, great for actually getting to Know the Form!  very thankful for being educated, via being able to travel to sai meetings,  with some serious winning jockeys! a couple were very skilled at labelling a horse about to go well! still good mates with some of them 40 years later! jump to the present! I almost now don't bet on nz racing out of spite!

anything else you think I should be mentioning?

hey! are you any any good at Pool! I'm looking for some money matches!  willing to travel to play ya if you say so! :)

That would have penalized my owners financially and the call for jockeys safety is not mine to make.

Finally they and barrier staff made a decision. To defer the races to another day would have been the logical choice but not considered an issue by the chief stipe.

And I should add that a senior jockey also gave his approval to that stipe...which I couldn't comprehend.   Im sure his fellow riders wouldn't have thought much of his opinion either..but the remedy was ultimately in their hands, and those of the barrier staff.

And - as an afterthought - that same stipe who put Reefton off because of an imaginary slip didn't consider strong winds and driving horizontal rain any problem at all.

Even Harness at Rangiora might have issues:

A track inspection will take place at Rangiora today (Friday) at 10am to determine if Sunday’s meeting will be held there, or at Addington. With the significant rain in Canterbury in the last 48 hours the condition of the track and the safety of participants and horses is the prime consideration. Due to the Otaki Racing Club's meeting on Sunday being cancelled, the race times for the Rangiora meeting will be changed. There will be updates as quickly as possible.

I note that harness meeting will go ahead on the grass at Rangiora tomorrow. What a waste it is with the CJC running roughshod over locals wanting to at least get it back to trial status for gallopers.

Be on the all weather, but if it was on grass be interesting to see how deep the drains would be dug where the mobile passed over.

There seem to be a few Christchurch boys in this thread, knocking about as late teenagers when I was, in the late 60’s.
Did any of you play rugby for Linwood?

I'd have been knocking about as a late teenager then. Didn't play for Linwood though.

I was being educated by Sisters of Mercy on the West Coast.  One of my favourite footballers played for Linwood one William Fergus McCormack.  I was given one of his All Black training jerseys by my Uncle who was an All Black tour manager.

Marist?

I was of your faith (St Bedes) but crossed over to play with my Darlington/Linwood mates although when I made the Canterbury Team (5 stone 11 pounds) 😂 I was playing for Marist.

At the time I was at Linwood I never made the senior team but we did have 5 All Blacks in it. Just to mention three: Tane Norton, John Ashworth & Fergie McCormack. The other two only played a game or too.

I loved rugby in those days until I got involved with the horses and here I’ve stay without the slightest interest in Rugby these days.

Some good memories right there…. Back then racing & rugby worked together, was a group of us that would meet at The Lancaster for a jug before Canterbury played on a Saturday arvo…. then special buses would cart you off to Addington for the trots…. we loved it.
