Bit Of A Yarn

Chief an idea for you.

I have been thinking for some time now about having a competition where Punters can bag a jockey for a shocking ride. The format would be the first ten posters who believe their horse was crucified/butchered in a race and give a brief reason for why it was a shocker. No post can be lodged until after the last domestic race has been completed in NZ.

If you agree with this idea, I will place a $20 bet for the winner and donate any winnings to the NZ jockey fund. I suggest a trial period of one month to see if it gets any traction. If there are multiple winners, I will ask you to draw one for the $20 bet.

I have come up with this idea to help Riders make better decisions in races. I have seen some average rides for some time now and feel it will make jockeys think that they don't want to be labeled with the worst ride of the week as voted by the Punters.

This bagging is open to all riders, especially senior riders as I don't want to bag apprentices, but if they have a shocker they can be voted on.

if it goes well we can also give a best ride of the week as well, but let's see if this gets traction first.

Can posters suggest a name for this competition, please?

Thoughts Chief

Not sure what you mean by Steward's reports and or inquiries, nothing to do with them, it is the punters who can vent their disapproval of any jockeys ride.

I watched Riverton yesterday and I was embarrassed by the quality of the riders, not all but many and I am not selecting the SI out solely, a lot of shockers up North as many will agree with.Any way give it some thought and get back to me.

I actually have recently spoken to a few riders about the reality of not actually getting that many rides! How at times  it is sometimes hard to get some of that needed  match conditioning!  both in the physical sense but also in making good cognitive decision in the race!  It really is a material challenge with that ever problem of "we are going to try one of the northern rider visitor for this run

ps, re topic headline: Interesting concept! I think there would need good sense to be shown by all players!

Would southern jockeys be eligible for this competition? Some would have us believe they have an unfair advantage.

I should say, that isn't my view. As Fish says above, the poor buggers get very few opportunities to practice and improve.

Ok I will can that idea.

I was attempting to make jockeys think about tactics when race-riding.

When I was riding there were many top riders and I and many others learned from them so this is undoubtedly where my era had an advantage.

Also, I believe the Stewards were so much more aware and competent than what we have now, and that brings Health and Safety into play where riders feel safe in their employment.

I remember a Steward named Jock]Otago]and seriously I thought he could read your mind in a race. I met him after we had both retired and he was with his wife and he turned around and said this is the bloke I was telling you about all those years. In the end, we had a mutual respect for each other.

perhaps,??? if you,(or others) using your experienced 'racing eye' spots something Which in your Opinion  has thrown up some interesting tactical options???

Other thoughts?

A deeper look at say any G1 NZ?  who rode the best race for their horse? and who didn't?

I am always a wear (wearing my coaching hat) that  any serious polemical critique on anyone parting in a sporting event that it has to display in acceptable  language and a nuance understanding of where that (say) jockey is relative to the actual opportunities that they have had at that stage of their career.. :

Interesting, but with Leo involved, not sure who would pay any legal claims against your site Chief.

He would be good but has lost interest in horses, although he has got a share in one with Tony Pike

Fish there would only be one winner there, my money would be on him, let me know if you would be seriously interested.

The race that Galah mentioned at Ascot Park was actually an ideal one for the jockey to learn from and I thought the stipes analysed it really well. Unfortunately, there probably isn't another race at Ascot Park for 5 or 6 months.

From my totally amateur perspective I have always thought Ascot Park is a good jockeys track. I can still remember Firpo winning two Invercargill Gold Cups, ridden in at least one of them by Tito Poblete if I recall correctly.

You're wasting your time, Murray....  He talks a big game but keeps refusing to enter the ring. He's getting on in life, so it's hardly surprising.

If he refuses to fight me for charity, he's not going to take on a hard man such as yourself.
