the latest on the peter profit webiste will make people laugh.

hes apparently quoting a post on x from mikey g

brad steele now the ceo at auckland.

hard to take it seriously, as we had been told steele needed to go back to australia for personal reasons and the other side of the story was he had been told he was no longer required because HRNZ was making so many obvious dumb decisions.

But it is harness racing in nz,so i guess in some ways ,it probably is true.

either way,its still hard not to laugh out loud.

at least thats my opinion.

actually, when i listened to the box seat and mikey g this morning,i had to chuckle.

its obvious the auckland thing will drag on and on and on and on for years to come.

also, listening to mikey g and what the so called proposal that has been put before winston peters.

its obvious, the only benefactors in nz harness racing would be northern harness racing..

its obvious the influence the galloping people have on such things.

All it is, is trying to reshuffle the pack and dealing out winners, who as we all know, will be the ones with the influence and ear of those in charge.

thats just the way life works.

Look at hrnz. All there policies that have failed, that we knew wouldn't bring any positive change. They were all a result of hrnz ignoring common sense and instead listening to people who promoted self interest and had the ear of those in charge.

again, thats just the way things work.good leadership does things for the greatwer good, but things don't work like that very often .Just the way it is.look at hrnz over the last 2 years.

Maybe Auckland might be wanting Palmy North sold and funds forwarded, it's looking more and more like Palmy might be finished soon.

who knows mikeynz.

What we know is,hrnz in the last few years have said, upper north island racing is of such strategic  importance to harness racng as a whole in nz,that they  are comfortable with taking funds generated by profit making clubs and using them to keep  the upper north island afloat.

palmertson north, with their reduced number of dates, simply don't seem to be a priority. And yes, their assets would come in handy for other clubs to say, hey, those assets are part of our balance sheet,as what appears to be in the winston proposal..

So we may not agree with that for obvious reasons, but hey,its something we recognise as being current hrnz policy.

But there comes a point, where the level of cross subsidising ,will start to hurt the ability of those profit making clubs,to maintain the level of returns they genrate for hrnz.It must be very close to being there already.

thats when your whole industry starts collapsing.

Thats when it becomes inevitable that they address the loss making issues finally.

But thats also when, everyone says, hang on,why didn't you do it years ago as all you've done is stuffed thigs up for everyone now.

hey,thats still to come.

I think the propsal that went to winston peters really is just a way to buy time. Its quite clever, but on the other hand kinda dumb, at the same time.In other words,it sounds like it could buy them  a few years, while shooting themselves in the foot long term.,all in one.

buying time doesn't change anything, but buying time does appease the natives, who think to themselves, well i'm all good for another 5-10 years.

again, thats just the way things work.

Lol 😂 you just could not make this up!

The harness industry is totally stuffed if Brad Steele is the one selected to resurrect Auckland TC!

Pathetic really, when HRNZ was saying he was missing Queensland, so yes they were telling porkies!

Anyway it is what it is and Auckland is DONE!!

There in lies the Whole BOAY outlook problem. Unable to see the Fact that HRNZ has to /and does Support the whole harness racing sector . Not just Clubs that you guys pick out worthy of your support or Poor Participants instead of grass roots ones.

Brodies last post just demonstrates the POOR Attitude to Auckland harness as the PRIME example . well done Brodster ! you lead by example mate . lol . a true hero of the sport.

HRNZ sets races for all Clubs . if the participants disappear as they do in NZ year upon year  ( without being replaced is the BIG issue) the old boys (trainers /owners and lots of drivers too )  are still going around like they were 40 years ago , and are getting tired and Not putting in the effort they were at the start of the century . AGE will SLOW  you down .

ENTAIN came on board with a lump of cash (as did Ladbrokes their subsidiary in QLD) to give something back to a twilight industry . BOAY hates that as , the monies are ending at some stage and were probably from their stockpiles of millions upon millions gained from International Sports betting , and they're just spending it (some of the profits) . On something WORTHWHILE . = Harness Racing  . as part of the TAB deal , a GIFT horse in these days and times.

In the Racing Sector Auckland SOLD off the TAKANINI training facility years a go , and more recently the Steeplechase Hill has been sold and being developed.   This is because the racing climate (wagering ) isn't enough to support even the gallops stake monies .

The constant 'picking on Auckland Trotting Club' is because they haven't been able to make a sale. My opinion is don't sell Franklin but sell Alexandra Park and develope Franklin is the best bet. the Auckland apartment sale went bad from a building company going bankrupt during the development, and now the trotting blokes of the ATC are criminals of the century to you guys with the biased outlook  . hahaha 🤣

NSW went well ahead selling Harold Park in the city back in 2010 and moving out into the country. FORESIGHT that saw them go ahead financially in a twilight industry. and still going ok now some 16 years later.

Forbury Park got sold there though in Dunedin , and Victoria Harness sold a huge chunk of land to bail them out of the $66 mill debt there temporarilarily . Yes only a BAND-aid measure I guess . But Band Aids are better than getting dirt in the wounds (of reduced wagering)  and keep the great Sport going for the moment.

HRNZ doing a great job of it at the moment still. Even put on SPECTACULAR new racing . Send em' more Band-aids !!

Probably doing better than the NZ thoroughbreds at the moment. well done HRNZ !!

i just read all of that.

as i've pointed out before,mr steele isn't stupid and is a very skilled wordsmith.

but somehow i think he needs a reality check.

and that  reality is auckland was actually a very well run club prior to the apartments debacle.

all the initaitves steele talks about, the auckland club has been trying anyway for decades.

And just because the club may in the hole for 77m currently, its not like it was  the likes of mckinnons fault. They may well have been much further in debt if it hadn't been for his approach.so auckland in fact currently i think being run quite well.its those in charge when the apatments debacle went down that made poor decisions.

so  think mr steele is out of touch with reality if he thinks he can turn around aucklands horse numbers or aucklands enagagement with their population or whatever.

its not because they haven't made a sale gamma..

its because we see no plan to change anything even if they do sell franklin..

they say they can't sell alexandra park because it needs re zoned or land use changed or something.

So  thats where current and recent past auckland leadership failed. They didn't start the process of giving them the option to do that.

mick guerin says it could be 10 years to get that done, but then again why believe that. Wheres is the official report  from an expert in that area,in response to an ATC request for all there options with the land.Silence the critics and provide the proof theres substance to what they say.

its all just people putting whatever spin suits them on the current situation.media included.

people south of the bombays want auckland to prosper in the future, but for that to happen they need to come up with something better than they have.

i agree about the harold park comment.

for  about the last 20 years,i have been saying hrnz should have invested in a training establishment on the southern border of canterbury. I've been saying that on here since the site started. i think you've always agreed with me gamma.

part of the reasoning put forward was because they could ,if they needed the cash, cash up,take the capital gain and set up somewhere else.

what i said to do,would have been a huge win for the industry had they had the foresight. If you and i been running hrnz 20 years ago,it be better off today as we would have got it done.could have brought brodie on board and we all agreed on something for a change.

just look at the land that the all stars purchashed just over 20 years ago, That would be worth 10 times the amount now . Google says resentail and industrial land in the area sells for between 2-2.5m  a hectare.

an earthquake helped speed up the capital gain, but had hrnz done that they could have turned a 7 million investment into 70m.Imagine what the stakes would be if that had happened.

What happened to the home sickness, yep as we mostly knew, just BS, and you have confidence?

This is the problem with the racing industry, burying their heads in the sand and hoping the problems go away!

Well it wont and you are entitled to your opinion but I can  tell you there would be very few around that thinks it was a good appointment!

Hope you are right but would not be betting on it!

how annoying. They have the hospital over the road too. any sort of Futuristic Villade built there would have medical needs right on the doorstep for the residents. might happen one day still.

I think if Franklin track sells , it will be very hard to find somewhere for the 20 odd trainers operating out of there

to 'be somewhere else' and still competitive. Doesn't young Jacob Dunn do the team from there for the countries leading stable ?  It's very hard to find great trianing facilities these days. I've even raced horses at Franklin in Non tote Penalty races in the past. Maybe they could update the track to actually race there?

That doesn't sound that good or promising at all then old mate.

As far as I can tell , he was on the committee and acting treasurer at my local club here called RedclIffe for over 10 years . Quite a small place which is comparable to Cambridge. So no-where near the Group 1 and Metro class level  of the Auckland trotting Club. He did promote to the committee and then Chairman of the Albion Park club from 2001 to 2024 , his brother Scott Steele was CEO for a period of that time , and they reportedly clashed over things at times.

The Albion Park Club has a terrific record this decade , but nearly all because of the efforts of David Brick who ran the day to day operations. and now is Racing Queensland general Manager as his promotion for great work. looking after all 3 codes now.

That might be more the sort of person that Auckland (and Cambridge need) to alleviate the debt a bit ? , and get great racing in action for the remaining industry participants. ?

Auckland Harness is COOKED!

If ever they were going to be able to get out of the red, was over the past couple of years, with the Entain  cash splash!

Unfortunately they have wasted the opportunity and running non profitable meetings is not a formula for success!

Seriously stupid decision by the ATC to appoint their new CEO who got the DCM from HRNZ, you just couldnt make this shite up!

You only need to read the AI answers from the Harness link article to see what a load of croc it is!

Anyway ATC have made their bed and will have to lie in it!

When will they finally WAKE UP!!!!!

They're up and about mate. Don't Panic. I 'm just looking at the fields right at this moment having lunch .

Racing from 3.00 this afternoon  as they have done for more than 100 years at Alexandra Park now.

Here's a beautiful old photo to you enjoy from the days when it really was tough going for all the members and participants. Thankfully we all can enjoy it all in luxury these days due to the hard work of many.

Plenty of wealthy owners and trainers going around putting on a great show As they always do . Including some of the BEST participants the World has ever seen , like the Purdon Brothers and Tony H for example.   I'm sure the ATC members have very nice beds to Lie in ,  with gun trainers like these big bad boys Doing the Job for them. 👍💰

I think they're Awake mate . they're pretty sharp at the driving and  training in the Auckland area . Hope you get to see and support them later today. Most horses there return a profit too for their owners. so lets hope they can for the Punters too. (But a lot of Punters are really dumb mate. Don't hold your breathe for that one)

Leaving the COOKing to Pete COOK , and get your bacon on the grill in the kitchen ready for the great action, or is Your bacon cooked ? lol 😋😉

Gamma, it is not about the racing and great trainers and drivers!

They are BROKE and they will mot be able to trade out of it from racing!

HRNZ coffers are not flash either for what they should have!

AUckland appointing someone who could not get the job done at HRNZ is just diabolically dumb, but they will realise this!

Anyway pointless debating it as you can not see the writing on the wall!

Because you don't like a CEO appointment. better than not having one Brodster. Don't worry . They're VERY SMART Wealthy men. Where there a will , there's a way.  the bloke has a history of being treasurer at a trotting club for over 10 years. So might have some ideas who knows. No need to go apeshit lol. 😂

Writing on wall?  what are you doing Graffitti now ?  Chief might join in with you.

What I can see is Rich Owners like John Green , Kevin Seymour , Dean Shannon , Steve Stockman ( who just purchased 21 lots at the sales) and many many more continuing to Pursue their Passion of harness racing.

As long as they are PAYING trainers to train them for them , They'll continue to race.

The Prizemoney may drop like you say . They won't care. (the ATC owners )  It's their Hobby . It's a Sport. they're having fun. they get money from other sources . Mostly they are multi millionaires . That means the sport will continue. they'll find it in some manner as Tas, QLD, VIC and SA trotting control boards have done in Aus. Are you kiwi's unable to find any answers to financial problems?

Sports club operate in debt from time to time. Just like you and me and general folk do at times. personally,  I had a mortgage for 22 years of my debt time,  so was in the red 100's of 1000's  for a long time , but chipped away at it , and cleared it.👍💪

ATC could very well do the same with their debt ? 💰 A debt which was mainly caused by a FAILED Building construction company that went belly up while under contract by ATC ,  during the apartment building process . very sad state of circumstance for all . So basically not the fault of the Fine trotting people , many of whom I know , who race Horses in the Auckland area.

Believe me mate. Things were tough in the 80's era too. It was very hard to get a quid out of any horse in those days , as there was too great a numbers . so we sold off plenty to Aus and USA and staff went too . I saw a lot of strugglers then in those days in the industry on the bones of their arse. THANKFULLY due to amazing work by the ATC and many of your fine NewZealand entrepreneurs , the participants are All VERY well off these days .  so don't worry about them so much. They're All big boys . they'll work it out . It's a SPORT they LOVE. Good on em' !!!!

Stick that writing on Your Wall .

You are talking about 10% or less of the owners! What about the other 90% of owners and trainers who are not millionaires and are funded by run of the mill working class owners?. Who funds those trainers' under performing businesses? And by the other 90% I am talking about 90% of the horses that race as well. You know, the ones who make up 90% of the fields for the rich owners to race against.

It is all very well to say that things are great for the top stables and owners and if the prize money drops they will not care, but you forget about the majority who are the actual backbone of the industry and are the ones who are in trouble and likely to fold if it gets any tougher.

i've always thought they fail to place enough importance as they should,to the link between trainers having training facilities and paddocks and the number of mares being bred.

if trainers don't have anywhere to train,or have limited space for their horses, then the demand for foals bred will be diminshed and therefore breeders adjust downwards the numbers bred. just supply and demand..

its one of the most significant factors in why i believe canterbury is facing an inevitable significant decline. Its already well on the way.I don't quite get why people don't talk about it much.its such a signicficant factor already.i

all the talk seems to be about auckland. Why can;'t people see the same thing is happening in canterbury. Its simply less visible because the numbers were so much higher to start with.

the only trainers you will see in 10 years time will be trainers who have wealthy owners who set up there training facilities(e.g.stonewall),trainers who have facilities handed down to them from family who trained,or trainers who train from rented facilities like racecourses. The likes of racecourses have limited capacity.

.look around next time your at the races in canterbury. Note the number of trainers who have a goldcard. Then note the others and consider their backgrounds.

if harness racing has a goose thats laid the golden egg,its been canterbury. But  underinvestment in this part of the equation in canterbury, will prove and is proving a  bad error of judgment.

And i'm saying, its already too late. People who think its a reversable trend are kidding themselves.

you are correct . they do fold . like the Dunedin trainers and New Plymouth Trainers and Wellington trainers when those areas close.

We had the same in QLD with Cairns, MacKay, Rockhampton and Gold Coast all closing. We did try and revive the Gold Coast after their track was resumed by the State Government , but they went belly up . and won't be back.

So the RICH will continue to Push the Sport along in the City areas.  as done in Auckland. your poor trainers and owners virtually 'Also rans ' there. Better to wait for Cambridge meetings . (like Doody , Chilcott etc)

All the QLD 'poorer Trainers' ( Ones without 1.54 MR capable horses ) just go around at Redcliffe twice per week,  to make a living in $6000 races and nearly all return a profit too. BECAUSE WE PUT PLENTY OF RACES on for them ) System works brilliantly.

NZ will be the same ? . your SLOWER horses trainers will just have to gather at Gore or Cambridge or wherever , and they already race for too much money, as Brodie suggested. so it might get cut down lower. as he says. A bit Like Victoria has had to do across the board too in hard times for example. But they still put races on every 2nd day for their participants right across the State.  (same horse and participation levels of NZ )

HRNZ are doing a amazing job keeping all your going  the so called '90%' going   ? with the Sunday racing and that . So a pretty good effort really .  someone there doing a great job as best they can. Under -appreciated at BOAY of course lol 😂 😋🌞

this is SUCH the most critical element . For the Sport.  in a few years time.  If you want new challenging trainers in the sport . You need somewhere for them to train. Jason Grimson has Sprinted to the Lead of Good trainers NSW because barns were leased to him at a prime track.  and his Offsider  the kiwi lad Jack Trainor got to enjoy that too.

This is so Important.

Woodend Beach has the Bob Butt, Dunn , and Hope camps well established so are well and truly' mopping up now that 'Rolleston ' has closed. of course Kentuckiana are a fine outfit too.

Just for you Mr Galah a very nice BOAY yarn ,( to at least attempt a brighter outlook on a forum lol )  , is we have a young Kiwi lad from Canterbury here. I met him recently at Albion and he is currently doing 15 horses off a Marburg property , mainly young ones. He is a very pleasant young man too,  named TRENT LETHABY from Canterbury. There are still some Lethaby's there racing , but he is trying to get established amongst the BIG BOYS in Brisbane . He gets his girlfriend (Taleah McMullen)  to drive them for him and they recently took a mare through to Open Class too. But anyway they qualified a Horse, and drawn one in the Prestigious QLD Breeders 2 year old Final tomorrow night.

Best of luck to the young 20 something's ( the future of the sport) and their horse I think can win too .Yippee Kiyay Race 6 Albion.  will be bigger than Texas for their careers.

as a 'Die Hard' Bruce Willis would say YIPPEE KIYAY  !! bring home the win Taleah.  and kiwi Trent 👍🏆

If we look at it from the perspective of the atc,and it is them who made this call,i can understand the decision to appoint steele.

from the atc's perspective, they wanted someone who comes on board with a positive view of auckland and its significance to the nz harness industry..

What would the point have been for the atc to appont someone who was going to look at their situation and say, hang on fellas, things aren't good,we need to put our hands up,take our medicine as we will never be as significant or of such importnace as we once were.

So the ATC is,in a sense, fighting for its own survival,so apponiting someone whos on board with that fight is what you do.

And if your from the atc you would look at steele and note his contacts, media skills, banking background ,etc and say to yurself, this is what we're looking for.

i agree with you brodie,i think the optics around the whole thing can be viewd quite negatively for the bulk of nz harness people. But,like i say,we aren't auckland.

personally, from what i've seen of steele,i think he may go ok at auckland.

But as you say brodie, auckland needs more than good pr and positive thinking.

the atc needs to be made aware, its not just about them,,its about how auckland's struggles are impacting the industry nz wide. And there again, steel actually would be as aware as anyone, just how the atc's plight is viewed througout nz.

this is SUCH the most critical element .

Best of luck to the young 20 something's ( the future of the sport) and their horse I think can win too .Yippee Kiyay Race 6 Albion.  will be bigger than Texas for their careers.

as a 'Die Hard' Bruce Willis would say YIPPEE KIYAY  !! bring home the win Taleah.  and kiwi Trent 👍🏆

tremendous sensation i think the horse of lethaby's that hes done a great job with. really seems to have hit its straps over there for him. I used to follow a trotter of his one time.Red castleton or something like that.

if you look at the stakes being paid around australia,

nsw seems to be going the best. they seem to run for above $20,000 on our friday night type meetings and around $10,000 for our average mmeetings,

tasmania surprisingly seem to go ok. the non win grade on sundays i noticed ran for  $17000 and the average seem to be 8-10.

western australia goes ok,sort of similar to nz is currently.

queensland, sort of similar to here, except run lower stakes for the lower grades

vuictoria and south australia seem to be the states with the worst stakes, victoria some saturdays notbthat bad,but lots of poor mid week stakes.

thats my observations. you would have a better understanding of how things work over there, especially queensland. queensland seemed to have worked out what works for them, but they are sort of middle of the pack when it comes to stakes. Although they seem to have  quite a few high stake age group races. Not sure where the funding for that comes from.

yes . Trent won 7 straight races with her last Spring and roared straight through the ranks to Open Mares Stakes races in no time. ( $16,000 races each Saturday) . Bit harder there though,  and she has just the one win this year from 12 Open Mares races.  earlier this month she went 1.51.8 to get her lone win. (and has 3 seconds)

Last week Pete McMullen went 1.50.3 winning the Open Mares by 4 lengths with one of his many brilliant speedsters. Tremendous Sensation was 9 lengths from the winner midfield.

All 12 of Tremendous Sensation's races have been run between that time of 1.50.3 and 1.53 neat.  absolutely flying really.

They just barrel along flat out the whole way these days virtually. That's just the MARES too.  Incredible training to get them to do that. (I would be beaten 100m by that lot with mares I drove lol 🤣😅) horses are just CRAZY good these days. they're like sports cars and just go go go

Mainly from the Leviathan Owners. they are the lifeblood of harness. Seymour and Garrard mainly . they probably own the racecourse's between them too lol , but there's Mitchell and other committeemen as well. it's a wealthy party. they know how to put the racing on. Kevin used to sponsor all the races before he started winning them All himself lol. now he sponsors SA racing heavily, just to keep them afloat as a good will gesture.

I notice Brodie said Pete both say how heavily NZ is reliant on the wagering on harness  . Perhaps that's why the Stonewall  STOCKMAN bloke has those really big bets time to time that was mentioned on BOAY, whether they (his horses) were going to win or not , to inflate the pools a bit ?  to keep whoever counts that sort of thing happy?  ( that people are actually betting on harness racing )  galloping people won't touch it .

No wagering on Queensland harness much at all.  here's a funny example.  about 3 months ago  I went along on a regular Tuesday Albion meeting as a mate had a horse in . once the horse went out to birdcage I popped upstairs to the crowded public area . (where about 10 people were 😄 ). anyway the pool was showing on the Odds monitor about $500 total in the pool. and the horse was showing $8-1  so popped a ten dollar win bet on it with about 10 minutes to go till race time. It dropped to showing just $4 win straight away. a tenner bet making all that difference lol. 😂 I do realize that people are sitting at home doing fixed odds betting , but still . it just showed how 'Small Fry' we are now.
