Mark D
Woeful crowd, woeful TV production and the same woeful betting I suspect - but we need to keep subsidising the stakes on these big days? Let's all embrace change and do it it our way!! 1

Let's all embrace change and do it it our way!! Advert in NZ Herald for cup weeks says ''DISCOVER THE ART OF TRADITION at AUCKLAND CUP WEEK''' Obviously they have short memories. Tradition is Boxing Day=======Derby Day. Tradition is New Years Day====Cup Day. Advert should have read...F......k Tradition,Racing the way we want it. The numbers on course suggest that they are wrong again.
Mark D
Yip I remember both when they were on their "real" days - everything was chocka including the infield. Only people on the infield today are the golfers - if they moved over to the stands they'd increase the crowd markedly
Mark D
So can't find where they show the pools for win/place on the dogofasite but watching on screen when last shown they were about 140k/120k. Allow for some spirited late betting and you may have got 200k in each. OK these days a lot of betting goes on the FO and they may have won a bit of money there but there's still an almighty gulf between the stake contribution and the money earned. But yeah its money well spent. Yeah Right!
Freda
That is the single most significant point that just is not comprehended.
nomates
Well i don't know maybe it's just me , but i watched what i thought was NZ's premier 3yo race which was a great spectacle only to be treated to a post race coverage that was no better than a 10k mdn at gizzy , feckin disgraceful . Crossed to Rosehill for 3 mins leading to some middle of the road race , they just don't get it . Still haven't shown Marsh's interview . Maybe i just don't get it .

Let me fill you in. A horse called Winx just happened to be going for 31 straight. Who in their right mind would want to watch a field of slugs battling it out over a mile and half on a goat track in Auckland when a real equine super star is performing in Sydney 10 minutes later. Trackside should of crossed earlier.

Get your facts straight , Winx raced at 5.40 pm , 45mins after derby , even i'm not melon enough to not want to watch Winx , as it was we didn't even get much a lead into Winx race as the last at Ellerslie was run at 5.30 pm . Saying that the way you describe our best young talant battling it out in our premier 3yo race about sums up the appathetic attitude thats got our racing in the state it's in . You don't happen to work for NZTR do you .
aquaman
Yes, you are right Noms, I have got my races mixed up. But they spent far to much time on the goats going round in the last at Auckland, and didn't cross for the real race until far to late. And I do not work for NZTR thanks. You need a law degree to work there.
Mark D
No doubt they will blame the weather and I didn't see any of the coverage but no doubt it was a small crowd - for a big day. Weather isn't their problem - Derby and Cup in March just hasn't worked. Shift them back to Boxing Day and New Years Day and try to recapture some of the magic before its too late. Xmas time is NZ's best racing time - don't try and compete with Oz in march/April
Thomass
You're a tuff marker Mark... Theres no f'er. in Aucks anymore over Xmas...although the Chinese stay because they can't swim or drive...but HQ ignores them anyway... But you're wrong...it's called two bites at the cherry... Instead of 4 days at Xmas as was the case...Its splits beautifully into 2 sesh's the one problem is it's the Queen's City's Cyclone season...at least one day usually gets totally f'ed over Edited March 9, 2019 by Thomass
Mark D
Not tuff just a realist and they used to get 4 good bites of the cherry over Xmas. Now they get 4 below par bites over a 3 month period. Be great to see that infield fill again. There's plenty of people in Dorkland over Xmas its bloated enough that even a mass migration of the few hob nobs doesn't make any difference. Corporate marquees might be up but everything else is down. Racing can't surivive just on the cream
Mark D
Bigger crowd here https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/111160232/near-record-crowds-attend-the-castlepoint-beach-races 1
Huey
Don't worry about the crowds Mark, they have got all that sorted with the BGP crew just ship them in from meeting to meeting (Officially designated meetings only you understand) .
