If a thoroughbred can carry 70kg over 5500m, I'm sure they can carry 60kg over 1000m.

The weights need to be raised. I don't know why they are so low - does anyone have the actual answer?

Our handicapping system has been absolutely screwed.  The 2kg female allowance doesn't help nor does it achieve what it was brought in for.

It is easy to focus on one stable and one Jockey as a means to vent our frustrations.  But they are only symptoms - the issues are more fundamental than that.

Two big differences , 70kg over 5500mtrs usually on a wet track running around 14.74 secs per furlong , so basically 3/4 pace . 60kg's over 1000 on a good surface running around 11.5 secs per furlong or faster , so full on sprint .

The stress on a horses body , legs in particular , is huge . That's before you factor in weight . They are animals , not machines .

Didn't worry many of the horses of yesteryear.

Modern day racehorses are a much finer breed now than even 40 years ago . We have been able to afford better bred and more refined animals than we used to .

We have bred the rougher tougher horses out of our stock , we have a lot of Aus blood now , where their horses don't have the bone or constitutions of ours .

A bit like how our rugby players of today , or a lot of sports for that matter , have changed to what was considered the norm .

More about the athleticism than toughness now , same with our horses .

Agree,  in part to the above - but, practices have changed too.

When I started out working in stables, we would trot the horses on the road, to the track, and walk them home the same way.   Often the boss would have us clattering around the block on a Sunday for something to do (  ! ! )  and, if any 'pre training '  was done, that would be on country roads, grass verges, on the beach..now pre training is done on someone's private track, often incorporating a walker or treadmill..so,  so different from years ago.

So very true and not a lot of roads available that you could pre-train on safely these days. I certainly think the thoroughbred has become a lot more highly strung animal than 30-40 years ago that may have something to do with what NM says, plus a lot don't really get the time they deserve to be a racehorse that they may have used to years back and add to that the very singular view our administrators take of the sport the animal is only becoming less resilient imho.

I see Jonathan Riddell failed to meet the required weight for two of his rides yesterday.  I guess we can expect the same treatment for him?

After the win in the HD he apologized in the after race interview to the 2 sets of connections that he couldn't make weight for , said he takes pride in making weight so he was disappointed in himself . Takes a big man to admit it , so good on him .

Probably the most underrated rider in NZ, has done it all and incredible rider. Was very pleased to see him get the G1!

Yes, same here.

As a former jumping rider he has made a huge commitment to keeping weight down to ride on the flat.
