Davis
What a disappointing field for the time-honoured Sapling Stakes (G3) at Ashburton on Saturday. This race has been run since 1919 and has been won by some top horses in the past. This year's field must be one of the worst ever. None of this year's field will make it to the top.

nomates
Ha , welcome to same problem we have in the gallops , G2 on Sat for 2yo fillies at Matamata , very disappointing field , only 2 winners . Seems mediocrity is seeping into all parts of NZ racing . I thought you guys were travelling better than us to , maybe not .

Only a Group 3 now ? my goodness. It was one of the 3 big 2 year old Group 1's in the early 80's when Melton Monarch won it, and Lyndon Robert for Robert Dunn. Is awful when races lose their prestige. sad.

Many theorised that the All Stars were the reason that the two and three year old races attracted small fields because they dominated and other trainers had little chance. There are no All Stars horses in this race and still a weak field. Perhaps it is that the two-year-olds are mediocre this year? I have seen a number of two-year-old trials and workouts and not seen any standouts yet. Perhaps, the stars have yet to hit the track?

Well now that ALLSTARS are scaled back to Cullen racing the playing field will now give everyone a chance. Full credit from me, to Allstars for dominating like they have , 6 of last 7 NZ CUPS with a narrow defeat by Smolda in 2015 after galloping at start, stopping it from being 7 straight .BUT A new era begins !! maybe the Sapling Stakes winner will go on with it ?? and be a derby horse , then NZ cup horse. I hope so.

They might if there is nought to keep them down,it's too early in the season perhaps for some major 2yo races, even the Kindergarten stakes has become a lesser event in recent times, lots of money in stakes for just a few starters, wait till the jumpers in the gallops start up, probably be worse. It was a good performance but underlined what I said earlier that this was a poor field. Despite the quality of the field It was a good training effort by Gavin Smith as My Ultimate Chevron made the others looks second rate. The Houghton and Hope runners disappointing with weak efforts.
