BitofaLegend
Isn't he a superstar? Just keeps on improving and that time he ran tonight is flying. Scary thing is, he still looks like he is improving with every run
Guest CrossCodes
Ring The Bell 5.96, 17.13, 30.03, run home 13.17 Overall 43.20 Dusty Gambler 6.01, 17.12, 29.91 run home 13.50 Overall 43.41 Stunning sectionals from both stayers, the sprint times they went were the fastest of the night than all others, apart from the last race in which the Aussie import went 17.01. The 520m times they went would have won both heats of the South Island Champs, the run home time was the big factor in Ring The Bells favour, his was clearly faster. To run that fast and still have the nerve to keep going for 732m is credit to both heat winners, and just shows that the days of having a one paced plodder winning distance races is well gone, you need to have a good turn of foot as well, both these dogs sure have that! aquaman
Quality stayers have always needed a turn of foot, thats what makes them quality. Quality stayers are always better than the best middle distance dogs, because to be a quality stayer you need to be open class dog or at least capable of being such. The difference between the very best middle distance dogs, and the very best stayers is, the stayers maintain their speed longer. If you look back at history, you will see all the best stayers were invariably open class middle distance dogs. So it is no surprise with those sectionals, in fact, it would be surprising if it wasn't so. Both these quality stayers could easily give the amazing chase a serious shake.
aquaman
I have now switched on my selection for the Stayers Cup. I thought up until now, that Dusty Gambler would be the one to beat. Backed him in the Collar only to be rolled by Ring The Bell. I now think Ring The Bell is the better dog, just ticks all the boxes. Dustys distance range is shorter than Ring The Bells, and I think the Bell just has more bottom to him. When he is right, he has few peers. Just my thoughts.

John I do take you serious when you speak about stayers due to your experience with them , I thank you for your view on it. I do agree that they would not be out of place in the Amazing Chase concept
aquaman
Yes Jason, I do love my stayers. I really like quality stayers that finish a staying campaign, then have a couple of weeks of R/R just walking on the lead, freshen up nicely, then put them in a middle distance race. They invariably perform. They do heats and finals better because they generally recover better and are able to cope with hard racing. Thats just my thoughts on the matter, others may have another view.

Nothing would get near what these two have trialed around both tracks. If they hit that sort of form over 527 before the cut of point. They will be top contenders. You are day dreaming if just because these types of dogs are stayers means they have no chance in this race (and I am sure Ring the bell would solo trial just as quick) Edited June 22, 2018 by BitofaLegend

And I have seen him trial faster than that. Same goes for Dusty Gambler. Both of these dogs at 100% will take some beating in the amazing chase Edited June 22, 2018 by BitofaLegend

It will depend on how much time he has to recover from his present assignment. I hope Karen follows through with the nom.
JasonMc
Ring the Bell aka Disco has been officially retired after last night's race, what a true champion who will go down in the history books and now has a place on the couch with Jenny Bartlett along side another wonderful stayer Thrilling Brat. I would love to be able to speak dog and hear the tales they will tell each other
Yankiwi
I think Dusty's undoing was drawing the #8 box. First paw (awkwardly) out of the box wanted straight down to the lure.

On the less bright side of that, does that mean another average Homebush, Bigtime, Opawa or Goldstar whatever, born in NZ, are going to miss out due to a champion import securing a NZ retirement home? Jaybee
For your information I was asked to take Ring The Bell a week after he arrived in the country and said if i was in a position to I would take him and if not then I would find him a home. It was a private adoption as have all my dogs. And just for every bodys information the first dog I had as a pet was a dog called Vintage Red who won about $5000 so it is not about giving the champion dogs a home. I feel very privelaged that the owners have asked me to give their dogs a home in retirement and am extremely lucky to have Thrilling Brat and Ring The Bell plus I still have super girl Thrilling Quest on my couch as well.

Jenny,I saw for several years the affection you showered upon Vintage Red and great life he was able to enjoy in retirement, via your numerous posts/photos on Facebook. The same has followed with Brat,Quest, and Disco.Awesome to see that their Racing Owners/Trainers sought out the best in re-homing options.
